  • As days start getting shorter and the air becomes cooler many anglers decide to put their gear away for the year, however during the winter many fly fisherman are rewarded with some of the best trout fishing of their lives. Trout fishing in the wintertime is perfect for anglers who want to have streams for themselves with the opportunity of having great days on the water. Yes, fly hatches do slow down a lot but the aquatic life is still thriving under the surface of the water with trout feasting on crustations, larvae, worms, baitfish, and eggs from the recent spawn. I've had some of my best outings during the winter and when you can bundle up and have fun on the stream it really pays off. As the water temps drops and the air cools I like to find deeper and slower water, where I will usually find hungry trout waiting for food to float past them. I use midges, worm imitations, and nymphs in the deeper water to entice a strike out of a hungry trout. Using flies with hotspots is also usually a good way to get a picky trout to eat.
In this video, I visit a Class A Wild Trout stream in the Poconos, Pennsylvania on a cold December day. I ended up having a pretty good outing a landed a good amount of nice-sized brook trout.

Some really nice brook trout in that stream. Love catching natives in the winter. Lots of good little creeks in the Poconos.

West Central PA freestone fly fisherman here. Nice winter brookies on attractor patterns. I've always wanted to find a beaver pond with native brookies locally here, but my local area sadly, has many streams posted by greedy people and to even explore new places would involve a lot of driving. Anyway, what decent underwater camera would you suggest without breaking the bank?

Yeah the beaver ponds are cool trout environments and they always hold nice brook trout. If u want a good cheaper underwater camera I would suggest a go pro they are reliable and work well underwater… I use a Olympus tough tg6 but it’s a little more expensive if ur not trying to spend too much

Awesome! Im brand new to fly fishing for trout, and have been out 5 times this new year with no sucess. I live in northern NJ pretty close to the gap and family has a cabin in the poconos. Any tips or recommendations of fishing in the winter, or any places i might find some sucess? I think catching a couple might help me in the learning process alot. Awesome videos, love watching them!
