My mind starts to wander as i restore and upgrade an old used Dell Alienware Alpha micro gaming computer about where the Dell computer company was going after they bought it in 2006. Did they ruin it?

When they were advertising these I wanted one so badly. I eventually got a Steam Controller for my PC and still use it semi regularly. I got over the learning curve and it’s actually a really great controller for FPS.
I still use the alpha R2, (With a GTX 1060 in the graphics amp) and I am glad to see people still showcasing it!
Back in the day I wanted one of this and were super expensive and knowing Alienware is bad to long run. i ended getting a Intel g3258 and gtx660 for old emulation PC got my Intel until 4.3 GHz with random resets. Final OC was 4.1ghz with a Evo 212. I was super happy with that build. Probably I will get one of this when they're cheaper
Never buy a dell product . Just build ur own pc
Dude i still have my Alienware Alpha i3 it still runs everything even New World as an rpg tho but still impressive
they go for 150 bucks on ebay now...
Just wait till they go on sale then buy it. I still have alienware its in pristine condition and runs like a champ!! 7 years old.
If Dell hadn't bought Alienware they would be no more. The recession hit them hard, and all of a sudden no one had thousands to spend on a PC. People also forget just how ludicrously expensive Alienware was. If you want a reminder visit Origin PC, because that was who used to work at Alienware. Dell has made them much more affordable, if that is what you want. You can't really knock any pre built PC if the person buying it has no idea how to put one together him or herself. This was a cool idea IMO, it just didn't succeed. However, Dell have done one thing and that is make Alienware's terribly unreliable laptops much better. The M11x and some of their other cool ideas were a huge success.
Very insightful thank you for taking the time to explain this.
I'm on my 2nd Alienware laptop and I absolutely love them. I always wanted an Alienware as a kid and i'm kinda kicking myself for not getting one back in the day!
I have a R5 17
it's pure crap
Alienware was simply put one of the best notebook vendors, they made robust machines with high end hardware. But also dell XPS used to be a really good notebook brand. Nowadays dell just screwed up with their prebuilt desktop making everything proprietary and putting everything inside a case with almost no airflow. Only if they had left one upgrade path just for the cpu cooling by making the cooler mounting holes standart, only if they had made the motherboard screw holes standard atx to allow people to swap the stupid case, then dell wouldn't be this much criticized.
I remember really wanting one as a teen but just couldn't justify spending all my savings on one.
I've upgraded and rebuilt several of these little guys. Even now I think they are surprisingly good little gaming machines. I still have I use as our media center PC. I mostly play older titles on it but I've recently thrown the PC version of Marvel's Spider-Man at it and it managed it. Sure it's on a mix of low/medium settings at 720p but it's still very playable and decent looking.
Did you use the external gpu?
I Still have mines it runs great till this day & that little graphic card still looks pretty damn good
The guts of the alienware pc's tell the full story from its takeover by dell. They bought the brand name/reputation/build quality and filled em with stanard dell crap parts.
Did Dell ruin Alienware? Yes, almost immediately by tarnishing their reputation, then later living up to that skullduggery by filling Alienware machines with Dells mass-produced, cheap, proprietary crap.
This Alpha though... Isn't this the same sort of design concept that the Intel NUC's have kind of generally gone to? Who knows, with Intel seemingly trying to join the discrete graphics market, maybe we'll see something in that line more akin to this old Dell?
Thanks Dude! Love, the Dell Dude
I still have the R1 i3. I bought it for very cheap several years ago because I wanted a compact pc for travel.
They were over priced when they came out, but ultimately they failed because of a lack of game support from game companies.
I recently upgraded from i5-4570 to Xeon (i7-4770) quite cheaply
All of us wanted one of these...
Another awesome video !!! Much love

I wanted one so much back in the day. Glad I didn't. Cool video though.
Enjoyed your video as always :-)
I've not been able to get my hands on a decent Win 10 Slim version
So i just install My windows 10 Pro 64x (pré activated) and remove all unused stuff (unfortunately it doesn't beat win 7's boot times or how light it is on the system)
Looks great! do you plan on installing HoloIso?
Thanks. Actually I'm happy with the lite version of windows 10 spectre that is on it. It's tweaked for gaming and works great.
probably looking at this as an option for my portable setup
I have one of this but I’m thinking it be cheaper just to save up and build an actual pc
Sell it to me when you do 🙂
a friend gave me one but idk what i need to turn it on
i have the hdmi cable but what else do i need
This maybe a Necro post but anyone know where to find info on these came across one I upgraded the CPU/ram it worked for month but today pressing power it turns blue like normally then the Alien decal blinks orange 4-5 times.
Maybe,it was wise to upgrade the CPU ?
I have that same screwdriver.
Alienware went downhill after Dell bought them
i was planning on getting another steam deck and run windows, but my friend told me to look at the alienware alpha because he has one that he doesnt use and rather give to me than me buying another steam deck LOL
Yes
try doom at 720p and 60fps all time :P
Just be careful with buying these. They get yellow blink if death
Thought that was due to bios lithium battery failing? Easy fix
Wow they are expensive still on ebay
It always baffles me how dirty ppls pc gets like how??? My alienware is 7 years old n still in pristine condition. Got ppl r dirty
i had more respect for adding gfx cards too dell computers, id say alienware ruined dell in my opinion. ;)
Honestly dell messed up Alienware
I think so.
they did ruin it this was my nephew pc when he used too come over he would play fortnite on it i would be on my personal gaming desktop pc i build by hand . nopw it only lasty me 6 months of owning it i payed 200$ too have it repaired shit .it used too be 100 but dell increased the price too repair stuff i hear in some places .now it is just in my closet collecting dust cause of the board is dead and cpu not working as well i need a replacement off a cup . i just got it for the steam controller . now i wonder if i can build a pc this case mini itx ryzen pc i wonder if a ryzen apu can fit in hear but instead i just build a ryzen 5 3600 with a gtx 1080ti 11gb build as my main rig now

Alienware is done, they charge an arm and a leg for they're subpar PC's , total crap!!!

1000% dell ruined alienware.
i had alienware laptop before the buyout and after
my current Alienware r17 is pure shat.
it's skie, unreliable and i have to fix shit all the time.
befire it ran smooth and was really nice
dell just sticks their dhit parts in them and charges you mire for them.
i will never ever buy another one
Dell ruins everything.
Laughable...Alienware has always been trash lol.
