  • Kefir is a fermented dairy food along with yogurt and sour milk. It is considered a food very rich in nutrients and is considered by many nutrition experts to be a superfood. In other words, it is a food that packs a lot of benefits into a few calories. Let's see these benefits.
    1. Kefir has many nutrients. Kefir is traditionally made from either cow's or goat's milk. The preparation method is simple and all that needs to be done is to leave the yeast from the kefir in the milk and this leads to changing its composition which makes it more nutritious and easier to digest. The microbes in the kefir yeast consume the lactose found in the milk and release many nutrients. Kefir is rich in proteins, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin B12, riboflavin and has a lot of vitamin D. Kefir also contains lactobacilli that turn milk sugar into lactic acid and that's why kefir has a sour taste.
    2. Kefir is a more powerful probiotic than live yogurt. All fermented dairy products contain probiotics. Probiotics are microbes that are beneficial for health because they help digestion, weight loss and better brain function. The yeast that makes kefir contains up to 61 different microbes, including both microbes and fungi, yielding a greater range of microbes than live yogurt. The yeast in both sour milk and live yogurt is usually made up of far fewer germs and never contains any fungi. So the range of microbes present in the yeast from which we make kefir is much greater. We consider this to be very beneficial for health.
    3. Kefir has a strong antimicrobial effect. The latest studies show that kefir has a very strong antimicrobial effect and protects us against infections. Kefir has been shown to have strong activity against salmonella, Helicobacter pylori and coliform bacteria.
    4. Kefir can protect against osteoporosis. Most of you know how important calcium is in protecting against osteoporosis. Many of you also know that vitamin K2 is also very important for the better absorption and utilization of calcium. Luckily for us, kefir is rich in both. Kefir contains enough calcium and enough vitamin K2 that has been shown to increase the absorption of calcium and its utilization in the body, as a result of which we believe that it protects against osteoporosis and in the long term reduces the possibility of osteoporotic fractures.
    5. It is very possible that kefir protects against cancer. Earlier, I told you that kefir has powerful substances that activate the immune system and protect you from germs. But the immune system not only protects us from germs, it also protects us from cancer. I should point out that so far, the studies that have been done using kefir have only been done in the lab on cancers grown in test tubes, so at this point there are no human studies showing that kefir protects against cancer, but in test tube cultures of cancer cells the results are very encouraging. In fact, in these studies it has been shown that kefir is more effective in suppressing cancer cells than yogurt.
    6. The probiotics present in kefir help with several gastrointestinal problems. As we said earlier, kefir is very rich in very powerful and useful microbes that we call probiotics. Probiotic means that these microbes are pro-life, that is good for health. This alone is enough to show us how important they are for our health. Probiotics take care of the whole body, but the biggest benefit is in the gastrointestinal system. Studies have shown that many digestive system ailments improve when one consumes kefir. Kefir appears to be very effective in many forms of diarrhea as well as in treating irritable bowel syndrome. Kefir has an antimicrobial effect that seems to be very useful in gastritis and ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori. However, we must emphasize that kefir contains lactose. It is possible that the microbes present in the yeast from kefir consume a large part of the lactose present in the milk which is the raw material for its production, but they do not consume it completely. This results in some lactose remaining in the kefir, which means that people who are lactose intolerant should not consume kefir.
    7. Kefir can help with allergy and asthma symptoms. Unfortunately, the data from here does not come from humans, but extensive studies in experimental animals have shown that kefir reduces asthma and allergy symptoms.
Kefir seems to help the body in many ways. Taking into account that it is a fairly inexpensive food very rich in nutrients that benefits in many health parameters, it is good to include it in your diet systematically. At least if you are not lactose intolerant. Thank you very much.
