      Very nice piece and such an inspiration! I was a little nervous when you started hammering the tang area..😂 Maybe next a double copper layered cumai? The contrast is so nice. Especially with that dark handle material you used. I can't wait for your next video. Keep it up!

      @@SRW_Origin.G thanks. I wanted to see how aggressively it could be forged on the vertical, was tricky at that low temperature but got there in the end!

      How do you heat treat the knife since copper's melting point is so much lower than the steel.

      small tip for future videos, either some audio or text explanation of the stages of the process - as well as notation as to what materials are used would be great. (for example we see you dipping and quenching the blade, but what are you dipping/quenching with? what temps are you reaching in the forge etc? general useful info for those of us who might like to give it a try one day)

    Beautiful work and knife! Do you heat the billet to a “brazing” heat versus a steel forge welding heat? It still looked like a yellow forge weld heat in the video.

    • @lewgriffinknives216
      @lewgriffinknives216  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Yes the camera makes it look like a yellow heat but it's in the red orange range, the copper is quick to melt beyond that!

    What was the purpose of putting the knife in the kiln the first time and then hammering it?

    • @lewgriffinknives216

      Softening the steel to prevent cracking and hammering to remove thick forge scale as it's very hard on abrasives

    Can anybody tell me what the benefits and drawbacks of using copper in damascus are? In terms of aesthetics its obviously very pretty, but in terms of actual usage does it have any other advantages? Such a malleable metal and all, how does it effect the quality of the blade? Is it harder to maintain or more prone to bends/breaks? How does it effect sharpening and keeping an edge?
    Anyone with a higher knowledge of material science able to help? Ive seen a few knifemakers put out some really lovely looking blades, but i do wonder how practical they are relative to a more traditional japanese steel makeup.

    • @lewgriffinknives216
      @lewgriffinknives216  ปีที่แล้ว

      The copper isn't at the edge so doesn't affect sharpness as the entire edge is carbon steel. Copper is antimicrobial and looks nice to some people, but if there's too much in the blade it will be too ductile as the copper isn't hardened so thin shims are used in the billet

    • @keytostart7053
