    Thank you for y our video! First, why wouldn't you cut both the shallow and the deep mortises on the door before you removed the jig? Second, Have you done an install with there Automatic Close option? Thanks again!

    Great video. I've been doing doors strictly since 1997. These hinges are great for interior use. Exterior use would seem difficult to weatherstrip with compression copper weatherstrip. I guess you could use pop in Q-Lon, cheap weatherstrip but that would be like building the BMW but opted for hub caps instead of real rims. I have used this Hong on jewelry boxes also. Smaller of course.

      Hi Roger, what would you suggest for outdoor use? I need to rehang a bungalow door to open to the outside because the floor has shifted & the threshold now has an uneven gap. As a result the door doesn't fully open to the inside anymore. Having a hard time finding hinges that aren't a security concern.

      They are very expensive though also these hinges are very sensitive to the weight of the door so if the door is heavy, when you close it might bend down.

    Very smart video. Very sensicle process. Easy to understand. Doing mock ups and trial runs is a good investment of your time. Good light and sound. The Soss jig is somewhat underwhelming and I have to wonder just how long those screw hole will hold up.

  • @AJ-pz8ug

    What type of door are you using? Do you recommend a manufacturer? Also for your jam do you have a preferred Material\manufacturer? When you prepared the framing for the door did you give yourself a tolerance for the door? Or did you measure the opening the exact measurement of the door

  • @Boilermaker-83
    @Boilermaker-83 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Curious as to the reasoning behind moving the jig form door to jam and then back to door. Why not cut the shallow and deep mortise without moving the jig. Seems like an opportunity to get holes misaligned.

    Awesome, you make it so simple, so with the buck stud is that what you would attach the trim molding to on the interior and then what would the exterior look like?

  • @jimmye3049
    @jimmye3049 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for the video, you sir are AWESOME!!! Quick question, Im assuming that door jamb and door were built to be flush with the drywall? If so do you have a video of how to build those type of door jambs? And if not can you make one or send me some tips on how to do this? I plan on a big reno in my townhouse and have always loved the "no trim, flush door jamb" modern aesthetic!!! Thanks bro!!

  • @ginoasci2876
    @ginoasci2876 ปีที่แล้ว

    first question: is the door right up against the jamb with these hidden hinges, or is there at least a 1/32” of space ?
    second question: will the door open all the way and clear the casing, or is it limited ?

  • @Wordsnwood
    @Wordsnwood 8 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Hmmm, Wouldn't it make more sense to route the mortises on the buck stud before it is attached to the framing? Then you could just do it on a bench at a much more comfortable working height.

    Do the Soss hinges say which side goes in the frame and which side goes in the door? as I noticed at 5:11that you fitted them so the door was swinging from the underside of the hinge as opposed to sitting on top which I would of thought was a stronger way of fitting them. Hope that makes sense.

    I do not understand the series of cutting the mortises. If I was doing it I would cut the shallow mortise and then put the spacer pins in and finish one set of hinges before moving on the do the door jam, I know it means moving the pins more but they are not difficult to take out or put in and doing it this way reduces the time needed to reposition the jig.

    • @g.work.specials6859
      @g.work.specials6859 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      that means adjusting the depth of the router bit for the critical depth of the shallow mortise twice, so this is the easiest way possible

    • @dogwoodtales
      @dogwoodtales 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ahh - I had the same question, didn't think of that.
      I suppose then if one had two routers both mortises could be routed with one set-up.

      That plunge router has 3 plunge settings. If you set the 2 depths before hand it will save you time. You don't need 2 routers. The default about sos hinges is that they have no adjustment.
      I started using the Tectus hinges and I will never go back. They have up and down, in and out adjustment. I like the video 👌🏽

    great vid - what is the reason for moving the jig to the door frame before cutting the deep mortise on the door?

    • @tylernettestad
      @tylernettestad 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The depth of the shallow mortise is crucial to the hinge sitting flush in the mortise. If he routed the deep mortise immediately after the shallow one, he would need to reset the router depth again for the shallow mortise on the door jamb. This would waste time because it takes some extra detail and caution to get the shallow mortise just right.
