    Thank you so much Dustan! I am so glad I watched this as I was about to make the same mistake not crossing the cables as you did. You have the same exact Edson wheel as I have on my old O'Day 30 1978. My cable snapped while sailing in a brisk wind (putting rail in water) with my son despite reefed sails. BANG! headed up into the wind. Thank goodness we were not close to shore or in close company racing with others. At least you are in Racine. Imagine doing the same work down south middle of summer when 95 out. If we ever cross paths I owe you a beer or twelve!

      This is music to my ears!! Sounds like you had a scary experience, and I would not like 95 and humid! Wuff! I’m so glad to know that the video was helpful. Look me up if you’re ever in the area and we’ll get that beer. Cheers and happy sailing!

    Thanks for taking the time to make the video. One thing to also note is making sure the cables cross each other correctly. The holes in the base (where the pulleys are mounted) are offset so as to separate the cables. Last spring I tightened my cables to reduce slack and the wheel became difficult to turn. After looking into the problem, I discovered the cables were fairly tight against one another where they cross in the pedestal. I had to remove one side and run it behind the other cable so that it properly aligned with its pulley. Now there is at least 1/2” between the cables where they cross. How the cables were improperly routed in the first place… I’ll never know, maybe from the factory install or the PO.

      Good call!! I’m gonna take a look and make sure mine are the correct way so they aren’t rubbing.

    I wish I watched this video before I rebuilt my Edson Marine steering pedestal. As described at 16:50, I made the mistake of not crossing the steering cables inside the pe distal which resulted in reverse steering. It was easily overlooked in the heat and confines of a bilge crawl space. One would think that Edson might point this out in their videos and highlight it in the instruction manual provided with the kit.

    I am thoroughly impressed with your tenacity in tackling this issue-thank you for taking us along! Great work with the camera(s) as well. Sorry that your steering failed when it did. Nice job in preplanning your approach so as to give yourselves enough time to do something constructive, like throwing out the anchor before you came to an abrupt stop by running into something else, just in case you had a problem (you did-through no fault of your own). Regarding the steering reversal, it did not occur to me either. I wonder if I would have taken a look at the direction the rudder was swinging before I left the slip-maybe yes, maybe no.....so THANK YOU for showing me how to avoid that error on my own!

    Thanks bro, good work. For steering cables, I would recommend you just tape some rope to the end of your cables and tie that to your new cables and it'll make your job of pulling through a wee bit easier.

    Fantastic video. I am doing the same thing with my Atomic 4 engine, C&C 35. Do you have any videos of when you took it apart? any hints? I am so bruised and cramped from squeezing into those tight spaces.

      Hey there, I only have this video. Sorry about that. Do you have specific questions that I might be able to help with? Which part are you referring to when you say “took it apart?” Just want to make sure I can help. Good luck with your project! Those spaces are so tight!

    How dis you re-attach the cable clamp? Is there enough space to reach down there, does one nee a special tool? I am struggling with this

    • @dustanbalkcom
      @dustanbalkcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ferdinand, there was space on our boat. It’s tight though and might involve some words. One suggestion is to wrap the end of the cable in tape so it doesn’t unravel and make it more difficult to clamp.
