There are things that will kill you in the Philippines, like bugs and snakes and natural disasters, but just how afraid should you be? This country lies right on the Pacific Ring Of Fire and also on the Pacific Belt Of Typhoons, so we get plenty of earthquakes, landslides, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions - but if that's not enough to scare you off, let me introduce you to the creatures that want to take a bite out of you! Yes, there ARE things that will kill you in the Philippines!

I remember Typhoon Yolanda. My friend Bruce had come to the USA 2 decades before. He had become a US citizen in 2010. I was his English tutor and he was my math tutor in college. He had lost his job and was homeless so he went back to the Philipines to try to find a job and help his family. He decided to go early to help hiis parents repair their house from a previous typhoon. He called me an hour before it made landfall. I nver heard from him again. A mutual friend called me months later that they had found bruce and his parents and most of his neighbors on a sunken fishing boat about 50 miles away from where Yolanda had been.
I miss him terribly. My fiance lives in Dagupan and i understand the dangers all too well. Last year in 2024 the family home was demolished by a typhoon. Luckily your video about making a home for Lucy has helped me help them prepare so we can rebuild their (better hopefully)
Thanks for the insight Pea. You really are a Saint....Saint Pea ❤

Sorry to hear about your friend.
Dagupan is the biggest city near to where I live. That must have been the last typhoon to sweep through. It was a cat 5 but reduced significantly before coming through with the eye north of Dagupan they must have been so unlucky for it to have destroyed their house. It blew hard for about 5 or 6 hours here but nothing like we have had in the past 8 years of me living here. Other than Northern Luzon Cobras and pit vipers the Pangasinan plains is one of the safest parts of The Philippines to live in. I feel earthquakes from time to time and the big one that hit Victoria shock us pretty badly but so far that is the worst I have experienced. Funny thing my wife hardly ever notices them and thinks I am imagining one. So I go on the website that records earthquakes and say look we did have one 😆

I got Dengue right before I left. It was bad, but not as bad as they say. The worst part was being stuck in the airport feeling like hell. I went home, rested and right to the hospital. In a week I was ok. One bad thing, if you get sick while in Phil, sometimes medicine is not available. On another trip I got a parasitic infection and even though I got treatment by a doctor, Mercury did not have the drugs for my prescription. They only had these pink pills for the fever that were worthless. I used aspirin that I brought with me. That worked and I got an antiparasitic coming back home. No cobras or crocs where I was, but I did see a big black widow spider. Cool video!! Listen to Pea, she is very smart and will steer you right!!

Florida is actually at a lower level when it comes to dangers, and natural disasters.
Florida doesn't have Earthquakes, Mud slide Avalanches, Cobras.
      Tiger Mosquitoes (Dengue Fever)
Cobras I knew about, and the Mosquitoes (with Dengue fever).
There is one natural disaster I think you missed Pea?
Tsunami - even though the occurrence maybe low, but usually around anywhere in the Area considered "Ring of Fire", risk is there, and the shifting / buckling of the tectonic plates in deep ocean, can trigger a Tsunami.
I haven't researched about Tsunamis with the Philippines, but seem to recall a Tsunami event occurred in same general area.

As always, great video Pea. Having a Master’s in Public Health/Disaster Management, I found this one especially entertaining. I myself have probably already outlived my 9 lives even before adulthood, so I don’t worry too much about the things around me that can kill me, although I do certainly stay aware 😉 I always wanted to visit Lelong, but unfortunately was never able to before he died. I drove by his area a few times while doing work. My asawa and I actually met in Tacloban after Yolanda when I was teaching a Disaster Management seminar and we each worked in partnering NGOs. Unfortunately, I am having to work a real job now so I can actually make money and support the family, but I miss the work and the people I came across everywhere. They were always so amazing. You did forget the banded sea krait. I saw one in Bantayan one time, very beautiful. Luckily, they are pretty docile. With all the dangers, the Philippines is still so beautiful. Keep up the great work.

Another outstanding vlog, Pea. Most of these threats are never even mentioned on the other vlogs about the Philippines. I've often wondered about the poisonous snakes there, and I'm quite surprised that they're not encountered more often when watching vlogs from there. One of my father's uncles was lucky to be an eyeglass wearer when on safari in Africa decades ago. A cobra there attempted to spit it's venom in his eyes, but his glasses protected him. So, I can attest to the use of eyewear as protection from at least that one threat. Common sense will protect from the jealous lover, or Abu Sayyaf, which you didn't get into in this one. Have a great weekend, and try to avoid that most dreaded snake known as the sucking afam.

Only the Pea could make dying so interesting. Typhoons by far are the most dangerous. I knew some people who worked on the rescue effort of Typhoon Yolanda. The storm surge was up to 23 feet high and wind burst of over 195 mph and a direct hit on Tacloban. I saw pictures that haunt me to this day. I'd actually been to Tacloban before the typhoon so I recognized some of the damaged area or should I say barely recognized it. I have respect for anyone who survived the trauma of that storm.

At one point I was bent over, hands on my knees gasping for air, when, LITERALLY, a machete wielding older man emerged from the tree-line. I was trying to scream...but I had ZERO air to do it with. He came up behind another younger guy, grabbed him from behind... then spun the kid around, they then hugged.... I found out from one of the ONLY guys on the court who spoke English that this was his Uncle who was just playing a trick on him. He DARN NEAR gave me a heart-attack. If I had been even 10 years younger, He would have had a fight on his hands! I'm glad I was so out of wind that day!
