This was so interesting Jack and thank you for lots of great recommendations. Three of the best books I read this year were from Argentina: Elena Knows, Brickmakers and Dangers of Smoking in Bed. The only Puig I’ve read is his debut Betrayed By Rita Hayworth and although impressive as a debut it’s not an easy read structurally or content wise. I’m looking forward to reading more from the country including many of those you mentioned.
Puig can be a challenging writer with how he structures his books. I’m very excited to read Brickmakers once I can find a copy. Elena Knows was very good! I’m hoping more of Claudia Piñeiro’s novels are translated. Hope you have a wonderful weekend and holiday. Cheers, Jack
Thanks, Brian! Which volume is it from Borges? I’m definitely curious to learn what you think of it. I hope you and your family are having a wonderful weekend and holiday. Cheers, Jack
Thanks Jack. I have read some great recent Argentine novels including Die my Love, the Wind that Lays Waste, China Iron and Elena Knows. I loved Kiss of the Spiderwoman but was a little disappointed with the other Puig novels I tried. I’m a big fan of Cortazar too. I can recommend Talking to Ourselves by Andres Neuman but my favourite Argentine novel has to be Santa Evita by Tomas Eloy Martinez. Have a good Christmas!
Thanks for the recommendations of Talking to Ourselves and Santa Evita, Ian! I will definitely be exploring both of those. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas. Cheers, Jack
Did I miss something? I noticed you referenced Leopoldo Marechal's "Adam Buenosayres". Have you read it yet? If so, can you do a review on it? I just bought a copy and will eventually read the book, but I would like to hear from people who have read it, too. Thanks in advance.
Short stories (and essays) are a mainstay whenever I am busy with work/class/obligations. I hope you are having a wonderful holiday, Kari. Cheers, Jack
Awesome list! I'm constantly looking for books written in Spanish as that is my first language. Just now for Christmas I got 3 books by Samantha Schweblin and looking forward to them!
Schweblin taps right into the dark socio-political that has been so dominant in Argentine literature. Hope you enjoy reading her books, Michelle! Have a Happy New Year! Cheers, Jack
What a list! Mariana Enriquez wrote a fantastic biography of Silvina Ocampo, “La Hermana Menor” (not sure if this has been translated). Amazing read, even for those who know little to nothing about her. Bioy and Borges are featured, as well as many other fascinating and brilliant people from her circle.
Thank you for these wonderful recommendations! Such a wonderful review.
Happy to share! Are there any Argentine novels you’d recommend?
Cheers, Jack

Thanks, Una. Now about that video on “El Matador” . . .
Great Jack.
I have a Borges which I intend to get to soon. I want to read Puig and Dead Girls for sure.
