    Jack, loved that you joined in this conversation! I’ve only read Beloved on your list and Morrison was a standout read for the year. The English Patient sits on my shelves unread. Your video was a gentle nudge in the right direction.
    Happy new year!

      Thanks, Shelly, I hope that you and your family are having a Happy New Year too! Ondaatje reminds me of AS Byatt in some ways in terms of the expectations he has for readers' background knowledge coming in to a work, but I hope that you enjoy The English Patient. I'm hoping to reread it in the spring or early fall if you'd like to read and discuss it.
      Cheers, Jack

    Amazing! So glad to see Primo Levi and Toni Morrison on here, I’m planning to read Carpentier and Ngugi wa Thiong’o this year- i was going to pick up Wizard of the Crow first but I think I’ll start with Petals of Blood now

    • @ramblingraconteur1616
      @ramblingraconteur1616  ปีที่แล้ว

      Primo Levi should be mentioned (and read) much more than he is. Ngugi has a half dozen truly excellent books, but Petals of Blood is simulatenously the darkest and most fully realized affirmation. Hope you enjoy it and have a Happy New Year!

      That would be great, Hester. I'm leaning toward May for River of Fire and later in the year (September or October) for Beloved as I want to reread A Mercy first. Hope you're having a Happy New Year!

    A wonderful list Jack! English Patient, Beloved and Periodic table are among my favourites, as are Borges stories. I have read Devil on the Cross by Ngugi and Kingdom of this world by Carpentier so I’m keen to read your suggestions by them and as many of the others as I can manage! Happy new year!

    • @ramblingraconteur1616
      @ramblingraconteur1616  ปีที่แล้ว

      Somehow The English Patient is never mentioned when folks start listing their favorite historical fictions, but Ondaatje accomplishes so much in that text. It is very cool to find another reader who has spent time with both Ngugi and Carpentier. They were both real discoveries in my twenties.

    Hi Jack. The other day I read a piece in the New Yorker by Parul Sehgal about Partition fiction being a predominant form to try to explain the immensity of the violence and upheaval of that act. I was particularly interested in one part of the essay where she explains how some of the novels were translated with an agenda to soften or change the meaning of some of the text. I definitely want to think/learn more about translation as art and sometimes propaganda. This is a great list you've made and I'd like to pick up some of them. Happy New Year to you and your family.

    • @ramblingraconteur1616
      @ramblingraconteur1616  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Sonya, and the same to you and your family. I think there was a real effort by the UK and its allies to pass off the Partition as the self-evidently best solution, analogous to what happened in Africa 1-2 decades later and in western Asia in the aftermath of the Ottoman Empire's dissolution. So many events that should be widely discussed and researched have been allowed to sit. I hadn't thought as much about it from a translation perspective, so thank you for bringing that point up.
      Cheers, Jack

    This is awesome, I’m unfamiliar with 80% of these titles. I like that you put the flag emojis in the description! Have you ever read this book “Seiobo There Below” by Laszlo krasznahorkai? One of the few contemporary novels I’ve read

    • @ramblingraconteur1616

      I have only read Satantango from Krasznahorkai. I’m hoping to get to Melancholy of Resistance and Baron Wenckheim’s Homecoming in the future.
      The flag emojis are a joy. I’ve been trying to use them in more tags, lists, etc.
