Simulation of Oklahoma's 2011 "El Reno” tornado

  • In May 2011, several tornadoes touched down over the Oklahoma landscape across a four-day span. One after the other, supercells spawned funnel clouds that caused significant property damage and loss of life. On May 24, one tornado in particular - the “El Reno” - registered as an EF-5, the strongest tornado category on the Enhanced Fujita scale. It remained on the ground for nearly two hours and left a path of destruction 63-miles long. Leigh Orf, a scientist with the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, used the Blue Waters Supercomputer the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to simulate that tornado in order to better understand how it formed and intensified.

I would too. I have been watching videos of the 2013 El Reno tornado, it was really something different. Once it got to RT 81 it was insane. Most videos at that point are from far away or from people running away. Skip Talbot's video map of where each chaser was at what time helps put some of the videos in perspective.

I doubt you'll see one. They have no clue what happened with the 2013 El Reno tornado. That one changed everything they thought they knew about tornadoes. It moved differently, it's structure was different, it's size, the speed it grew, the way the multiple vortices kept coming and coming.
The way it was structured was unusual in that it had a extremely large main circulation on the ground with a large cone that was merely a persistent gigantic vortices that grew to massive size and yet it was literally eating smaller ones rotating into it. Later 2 other large vortices established themselves and they rotated around the central rotation that you couldn't even see really except for the debris moving along the ground. Meanwhile on the edge of the entire rotation, smaller suction vortices can be seen forming on the back "southern" side and eventually dropping on the Eastern side one right after other before getting rain wrapped by a massive collar of clouds literally being pulled down to the ground.
Whether it was 130mph RFD or 200mph bearscage wind speeds, the 2013 El Reno can't be rendered because quite frankly it was the most non traditional storm anyone has ever seen. It didn't do anything that could be modeled in a way they could be reproduced visually like the 2011.

@@LeighOrfsThunderstormResearch '13 was such a complicated storm. I think in the near future there will be debate over the exact width and complexity of the storm. Will the vortices outside the main funnel be considered part of the tornado or perhaps they'll end up being considered separate satellites? Skip Talbot made the observation that what is traditionally considered the bear's cage had such strong tornadic winds and is considered part of the tornado. I bet there will be future debate about what the actual tornado width is with this unique storm

left of it, was found against the fence at the edge of the field no one in the car survived.

Everyone. This is the Hinton-Calumet-El Reno-Piedmont-Guthrie, Oklahoma tornado from May 24 2011. And this was a real EF-5 not that bloated EF-3 from 2013 that everyone slobbers over. This tornado didn't roll vehicles 100 yards it tossed vehicles more than 1000 yards. It didn't leave houses partially standing with EF-3 damage it swept homes completely away. El Reno 2013 was big but not so powerful compared to others like this one.

Tornadoes are extremely hard to foresee and you can’t just go up to a weatherman every morning and ask him if your town is gonna get hit by a tornado today. Plus, the ultimate goal of meteorologists studying tornadoes is to create a better and more accurate warning system.
