Top tip: Stacy only likes *distilled water.* I had a mini-Stacy, and I angered her by using regular tap water. Too many minerals! She got constipated and eventually simply quit. Luckily, distilled water can be had relatively inexpensively by the gallon at the market.

I don't know about descaling a steam iron, but I have to descale my Kettle about once a month - even using exclusively filtered water. It's pretty easy - boil a concoction of half white vinegar, half water. Allow to sit overnight. Dump the water. (In a Kettle boil another full pot of water to kill off the vinegar taste. Vinegar in tea... not good.)
I have a Philips brand Stacy that has a special anti-limescale feature and can be safely used with tap water. Totally recommend it!
As someone who works in a second hand clothing shop, Stacy (or rather her industrial cousin Brunhilde) is a lifesaver for us - clothes look ironed, bacteria is killed, and bad smells are eradicated! (Not tobacco though - that smell survives everything but a full wash cycle)
Back in the old days (1970s), when a night out involved a very smoky bar and dance floor, simply hanging clothes out in the fresh air for a good few hours fixed the tobacco smoke smell issue.
One's hair though required washing.
Coming from a former pack a day smoker - your best bet to remove cigarette smoke stench is clorox or lysol fabric sanitizer in the rinse cycle of a wash. Most things won't remove smoke stench but this has my (never smoked a cigarette in his life) boyfriends stamp of approval. The fabric sanitizer is also great at removing the smell of animal waste.

@@SummerAlleriaWindrunner we don't have laundry facilities in-shop! Most places don't tbh, this is why it's best practice to wash items before you donate them and wash anything you buy before you wear it!
Another trick to remove cigarette smell is to use baking soda in the wash.
Steaming feels the same as ironing to me. It's the same level of work. I just buy clothes that either look good wrinkly or don't wrinkle. I have clothes that really should be ironed/steamed, but I never wear them. One extra step too much for me.
My momma have a good trick. When you dry the clothes, take them out before they are fully dry, hang them up, pull on them and their seams a little, let them dry and voila! Works perfect on clothes that doesn’t get too wrinkly.
@@Lufia4 what we do in my family is dry the clothing in hangers, that way not only they donn't have wrinkles, but they dry faster!

@@Lufia4 I learned this trick from my mother as well. Or to simply line dry completely, do a delicate run through the dryer for 5 minutes, then hang or fold.
I go to the laundry mat and they come out folded so I just put them away.

I finally got one like I've been meaning to - I LOVE it. Absolutely buy a Stacy. Takes time to steam things, but so much less set up hassle than ironing, and less chance of using an incorrect setting on the fabric. Just be careful you don't get your hands with the steam.
I bought a small one off Amazon for less than $30 and it works great.
I also got one from amazon, it's handheld (but comes with a cable), it was around 35 euros, it's white and purple, and absolutely worth its price. 😊😊❤️
A tip from my years as a professional stylist & working in clothing stores: steam from the inside of the garment rather than the outside to achieve faster and more thorough wrinkle removal AND no risk of questionable water leaving visible mineral deposits or similar stains on your clothes!

I have a mini Stacy... She is very helpful for my more precious fabrics... But a traditional iron works great too. My best tip to avoid wrinkles, is to hang clothes as soon as they come out of the dryer / when I'm done wearing them and am planning to wear them again! Or even air dry the clothes in a hung / flat position! It helps a lot. I also only honestly iron my fancy / outing clothes, what I'm at home with, no one's gonna see, so no one cares 😂
i found that if i need something not to be creased i can wash it without a lot of other stuff (so empty load) and then ive got a anti crease setting on my washing machine so i use that and then emediately air dry
In my early 20’s I was asking my mom for YEARS for a steamer for birthday and Christmas because I hate ironing… she was like bUt YoUlL nEvEr UsE iT. Eventually in my late 20’s a client of mine listened to me and got me a steamer!!! I’ve had it for nearly 10 years, she saved my sister’s wedding day with all the bridesmaids dresses, I literally used her yesterday!!! Highly recommend!! If you hate ironing, you WILL use it!

I have an Anastasia (Stacey, ahem). She's kind of great, but I still put steaming off until I need something or the pile gets higher. Fun fact, steaming kills bacteria, mold, viruses, so if you're on vacation and have only one or two shirts you're wearing in a hot sweaty climate, you can steam and clean at the same time. (Bring a hand-Stacey) or throw her into a steam dryer. Thank you, Andrea!
I had a Stacy once, loved her. I live in comfort clothes that don’t need to be ironed now, thanks to chronic pain but when I cared I had a Stacy

Me too, some days I never get out of my comfy pajamas, like today. Have one of my many doctor appointments? Sweat pants are the answer. But, I still love my dresses, skirts and heels I used to wear every day. On the rare occasions, that I feel really good, I like to put on a skirt or a dress when I run my errands. It makes me feel good and pretty again!
This is me when it comes to fashion. Due to chronic pain I like a looser fit, which generally means buying a size up from what I am "supposed" to wear because everything else just hurts. Do I look as good as I could? Maybe not. But at least I'm comfortable.
Ooh, same. Most of my clothes now can be pulled immediately from the dryer and be okay, but a steamer to get the stubborn things is easier on me than ironing. Not impossible to iron and do more sewing like I used to, but leaning in HURTS. The upright steaming is fortunately helpful to me.

Before I loved things with tighter bodices (I almost bought a corset) and now I can’t even wear a tight stretch vest.
It definitely meant adapting my style and with lockdown I’m not sure I really have it figured out yet.
Since getting my own Staci (with an 'i' since she is smaller and handheld), I only use Ingrid (the iron) to press seams when sewing, to melt Stitch Witchery, and to press things that get (lightly) starched (very helpful on some crochet work on my summer tops).
Also works great on those furniture covers (like from Ikea) or duvets that you would never want to or could be able to iron.
I do miss working in a retail store and having access to the bigger, hotter steamers.
I never iron nor steam - to me it's the same level of work. 😂 But my mommy taught me the proper ways to hang dry and fold my clothes so they're never wrinkly ✨️

@@SomniaRomantica If you take the time to straighten and pull on clothes to avoid wrinkling when you hang them to dry, most fabrics will dry in that position and stay flat when you take them off the drying rack. When you put them in a dryer, the fabric will keep the shape it cools down in, so you have to fold them right when they get out while they're still warm. For either option, if you smooth down the fabric while folding and make sure your folds are crisp, on most clothes it's enough to keep them from wrinkling. 😊 It takes a little longer to hang and fold them, but it's not a part of the process that I actively dislike, so I don't mind taking that time to avoid ironing !

After years of finding that my clean, dry clothes ALWAYS pile up in the washing basket awaiting to be hung on a hanger after coming off the dryer I had an AH HA HA HA💡 🙄 moment and now hang them to dry ... directly onto a hanger .. cuts out the middle hassle... and will be saving me years of time from now on going forwards 🤔😳🙈✊🏻✊🏻

Another option is to hang your creased clothes in the bathroom after a shower! The steam from the shower will help remove the creases :) it works a treat for me🎉
I first had a cousin of Stacy, it died at some point. Nowadays I have the mini version of Stacy, a pocket version with a long cord. Very lightweight & easy in use, I love it! I use the iron only for pressing. Also a pro-tip: With some lighter fabrics like tule and mesh, you can hang it in your bathroom after taking a shower. The creases fall right out!
Yup, my mini-Stacy can steam like 95% of my clothes (everything except for really crunchy thick cotton) and it does not take any space, costs practically nothing and is so much faster to use than big Stacy!
@@niki_bbb Yes! You have to refill more often and indeed it's not for the super heavy duty fabrics, but otherwise I am on team mini Stacy, or to have it as addition :D
I have one of those too, but I'm always confused as to how the filling should be done. Is the measurement done when it stands or when I have it point forward to steam?? 🙈🙈
@@AniRSm I am not sure which one you use, but have this one: Tristar ST-8916 (should I actually call it mini Tristan then 🤔) You fill it (with a little funnel) while it stands, to the line where the limit is ^^
I've been using the shower steam trick on my clothes for ages, mostly T-shirts and dresses that got wrinkly when packed. But my husband wears more iron-worthy clothes than I do (and I rarely iron for him since I seldom iron my own), and a mini Stacy could be incredibly useful. I'm gonna have to look into that one!

Just a tip! You can also pop your clothes in the dryer for about 5-10 minutes and put it on right away and it gets rid of all the wrinkles :)
Or if you're going to take a shower that morning, put the clothes on a hanger and hang it up in the bathroom while you shower. The steam will help- but it's not as foolproof.
I got a steamer thinking it would make my outfits look more put together but I still use it about as often (ie not very) as I do the iron 🤣
I found a brand new portable garment steamer still in the box at a garage sale for $5 and it’s been a game changer for sure! I also make my own “wrinkle release” by mixing water and some fabric softener in a spray bottle.
Steamers are a lifesaver, I didn't know how much worse I lived before I got one. I hated ironing before school/work and it made mornings unbearable. With steamers you can even stack items so you can steam them on top of each other if they are thin enough. Also no chance of accidentally burning something - I've lost at least 5 favorite clothing items to the wrong iron settings before.
I'm old enough that I had to iron by putting it on the gas stove, and testing the heat with a wet finger. I sewed my own clothes on a manual treadle machine and ironed every seam before the next sewing step. That was the '70s and rural,.so off grid.

I've gone for the "I've become crease blind" option, like clutter blindness, but for creases on clothes 😂 I figure the clothes will get wrinkled anyway as I wear them, so I'm not really arsed to get my Stacy out for such short term results.... that's my excuse anyway 😂😂😂
Love using my steamer, and it is less harsh on delicate fabrics too.
For those who are not iron averse, but do hate weird creases: tailor's hams and sausages. They're basically small, densely packed pillows to shape garments corrently when you press them

I'm so lazy that I choose the clothes I buy according to how much they tend to wrinkle... But sometimes theres a piece I really can't put back, for those few pieces I got something similar like Stacy in a smaller, more handy size. It's a lifesaver! Never want to miss it.

Everytime I think about getting something you post about it 🤣 I really want a steamer. Some outfits I have are from Mexico and they're handmade. I'm so afraid to burn them or they don't even iron out. They get weird lines.
We had a Stacy in the department store where I used to work and we'd only take her out when we needed to put the new bedding out on display, but it was legit my favorite thing to do, I LOVED getting all of the wrinkles out of the sheets and comforters. Everyone in the store knew to get me whenever it was time because I'd willingly volunteer for that shit lol

I worked retail as a teenager and we steamed almost everything before we hung it on the racks. I loved it so much, I bought a hand held steamer as a 19 yr old and never looked back! I didn’t even own an iron until about 10 years ago when I started quilting. Yay for Stacy!

I'm so bad and so slow at ironing, I finally started sending all my husband's work shirts out to the dry cleaner. Expensive, but a huge amount of work off my plate!
My mother taught me just about everything I needed to know to run a household one day and she did include ironing, but she only got as far as teaching me to iron my Dad's flat, square handkerchiefs. That is no help when it comes to collars and cuffs!
Shirts are actually really hard to iron perfectly!
Honestly I think a steamer is a must if you have to iron shirts.
Including women's.. they're smaller so they're even harder!

For a crisp cotton dress shirt a steamer does not work well. For those you need a traditional iron. You can Google a video teaching you how it's done. You first fold along the seam at the upper back to do the shoulders. Then you do collar opened up and laid down flat. Then you iron out the fold you created in the first step in the back. Then cuffs opened up and laid flat. Then the back of the shirt and then the unbuttoned front. But even just reading this I know it's a lot of work.

I agree! I've watched those ironing videos over and over and still, I iron creases in and, as I said, I'm so incredibly slow!
Stacy is definitely your best friend! Although, I've been washing my clothes with a washing detergent meant for Delicate wash and wool, but with the regular programme I mostly use and my otherwise wrinkly blouses don't come out wrinkly anymore (I don't even need softener)

I want a steamer so much. Unfortunately, I also want a lot of another stuff but it's on the list. When I worked in a clothing shop, I liked to place the steamer underneath the fabric and direct it upwards (still being careful to not direct at my face, but I think the fabric held most of the steam back. I find the extra bit of weight from gravity helps get creases out of more stubborn fabrics this way. If the fabric's thin enough, you may also be able to steam both sides at once with this technique.
I actually kind of enjoy steaming. It's a bit relaxing and I can let my mind wander. Plus the steam is nice and warm on a cool day. Definitely easier than ironing.

I have a h20 mop that immaculately cleans floors, never leaks water like other steam mops and magically transforms into a multipurpose sterilising cleaner, upholstery/rug cleaner, window washer, grout cleaner AND a powerful garment steamer! Those late night infomercials aren’t kidding around, the H20 steam mop really is brilliant. And I feel better spending that money on a device that fulfils many purposes other than just steaming a few garments when I can be bothered.

I just spray with a little water and pop it in the dryer and then take out and quickly hand press. Works like a charm. If it can’t be put in the dryer I hang in the bathroom while I take a shower then hand press while still steamy.
Usually i just lightly spray the clothes with water and sometimes then hit with the blowdryer and that usually works
I recently learned a trick for some stubborn wrinkles. Basically you steam it from the inside and get Stacy's "eyes" close to the fabric so the steam had nowhere to go but through the material. Idk how this would work on all fabrics. But it worked nicely on a very wrinkly nomex jumpsuit. (I was steaming race car driving suits for a museum exhibit).
For someone who has itoned all her life, Stacy seems to take you about the same amount to time as an iron takes me for the same garment. To each their own!!

I have a handheld “Stacey”, and I LOVE her!
I love natural fibers, like silk and cotton, but hate ironing. What I do instead is hand-wash them gently in cold water, never letting delicate fabrics soak. Then I hang them up, soaking wet, on plastic tube hangers. I straighten out the garment and let it drip dry. The weight of the water in the fibers of the supersaturated garment pulls the fabric smooth. Rarely do they come out wrinkled. Maybe won’t be as glossy-smooth as ironing, but much tidier than machine washing & drying, and far less work. It does take up a bit of space, but I wash only a couple at a time and it’s fine. Works really well on silk and linen. Less amazingly on cotton, but still mostly good. Just hard to do on patterned silk, because colors bleed. This is why most of my silks are solid colors.
Lazy gals can look polished, too! Just within certain parameters. 😂

I think I love Stacy! I have some clothes which should be ironed but....I hate it a lot. Even spray starch can't make this process any more fun. I need a tiny Stacy though. Don't have that much space in my tiny flat ^^°.
Clothes steamer is a game changer. I hated ironing my husband’s work shirts and it really helps speed up the task. For my clothes, I find it great for silks, linen, chiffons and anything with fussy pleats.

I have mini Stacy too as many ladies here and I love it! Big Stacy is more practical for stationary and some easier holding but mini Stacy is more practical for storage

There's also the method that requires zero money, but doesn't work quite as well - bring your wrinkled clothes into the shower with you - just don't hang them directly in the spray. Only works if you have a hanger with a hook that rotates and a shower that doesn't have not a floor-to ceiling solid wall/door around it. May not work for small-stall showers either. My blouses are always wrinkled from the closet and I use this as a quick and cheap method to make them more presentable.

I used to work in a boutique and I loved the steamer we used!! She was fast, could handle literally hundreds of pieces in a day, it was great for my skin lol, and it helped with any smells from the factory or any smells from customers because she helps with getting rid of bacteria! If you have a chance to get a steamer, do!!!

Yes! Steaming is amazing, and that’s what they do in retail shops. Not only does it take out the wrinkles, but it also disinfects the clothing, so it cuts down on laundry. Use distilled water in the steamer and not tap water! Mineral buildup happens with tap water, and it destroys the steamer.
I do not iron either. But also I live somewhere v small and do not even want to find room for a handheld steamer. I mostly deal with the problem by ignoring it! But when something really needs to be flat, I use my hair straighteners on it. Swish swish swish, quick and easy.
I've been using a Stacy for years and have never had issues with the hanger bottom creating creases. Also, I find it's easier to steam by putting the "eyes" lol inside the shirt and steaming upwards. Just keep your fingers out of the way.
Wrinkle release spray works when traveling or if Stacy is unaffordable. Not quite as nice, but helps you look presentable in a pinch.

The fabric dewrinkle spray, Downey, works great, too, & without electricity, but there is a wait time to dry. I also NEVER put my nice clothes in a dryer after washing. I hang them on hangers & let them air dry.
