The best theory I have ever heard for the Japanese public's disinterest in PC gaming is that culturally they strongly associate PC's with strictly work related activities.
With all of this in mind, you're willing to pay 300 dollars to play at a outdated resolution at 30 FPS with graphical settings equal to low on PC instead of paying 600 dollars to play at a resolution that's twice as detailed, twice the frames and higher graphics settings. So now I hope you see where twice the price comes into place.
It's also quite sad when you watch some developer interviews where they say they wanted to build a game 10 years ago but had to hold it off as the technology and hardware to create their vision was just not up to the task to do it. There were some developers who stepped out of the box though and the results were staggering, a few games come to mind; Battlefield 2, Arma, Planetside.
They will also be adding game pad accessibility so you can browse, buy, download and start your games all with a controller, pretty much like a console. This is really nice for those of us who have our PC's hooked up to a HDTV and play some games with a Xbox 360/PS3 controller or other game pads of the likes. After that consoles will literally have nothing going for them when compared to a PC.
What's frustrating is that we have all this power, and games are still being dumbed down due to the consoles hardware. By now we could of had much better graphics, bigger worlds to explore, no loading screens, better AI, better physics engines, higher quality audio, and a lot more packed into a single game compared to what we get now.
I own all the consoles. I was using an old dell laptop to play WoW. When my primary console (PS3) got the Yellow Light of Death, I found it time to build my gaming rig. I love it. More than the game library, graphics, sounds quality, modding, superior controls. I really love the shelf life of the games. People still play CS 1.6! Quake is always still amazing. When the servers get shut off, the community just makes private servers. PC gaming is the way to go.
it is people like you who makes me defend pc gamers who say "pc master race" usually i hate when pc gamers bash on consoles i am a true pc gamer but i still hate it becomming a sect of some kind you play what you like that it dosn't make you a bad person if you choose console nor pc but after reading this comment i might reconsider what i think i can't feel bad about console users for being bashed when they do the same to us pc gamers
I still remember when I first played Planetside, I couldn't help but just stare at the carnage with 100's of people and vehicles fighting over a base whilst the night sky is getting light up by bullets, lasers and air vehicles blowing up. Keep in mind this was in 2003 whilst the Xbox and the PS2 were considered the current gen consoles.
Respect your opinion. I play pretty much all, ps3, wii, 360, PC and such. I mostly play ps3 but I am not hating on others just because, people have their choices for their system of choice. Being a fan is one thing, being an elitist is another.
PC gaming has stuck with me since forever. The fact of the sheer capability of the PC keeps me on. With so much ability to multitask and such a broader video game library it's simply not even a choice to dedicate myself to console. It might get expensive, but to anyone serious about gaming that $300 graphics card is worth every penny for that smooth and enjoyable performance.
With that said, lets keep in mind that the 720p resolution in which 90% of console games run at has roughly 700-800 thousand pixels where as the 1080p resolution has over 2 million. So moving from 720p to 1080p you need about twice the amount of power to be running the same frames as you were in 720p.
this is bs, come to japan and see. Plenty of people play pc (otaku whatever the fuck you call it), there is even a district in tokyo completely dedicated to pc gaming. People also play consoles
The only thing I don't like about PC gaming is been worried if the graphic's card, of CPU, etc is going to be enough for play a game every year, which is something good for consoles, you spend $300-$500 in a console and be happy for at least 5-6 years without worry if the console is gonna be enough for play all the games.
the reason consoles are $200-$300 is because their graphics are set lower than a PC can run. This means low texture quality, little to no post processing effects, and absolutely no anti-aliasing on consoles, not to mention about 30 FPS on the console compared to 60-120FPS on PC. Btw, because of consoles, you can build a $400 gaming PC that can play any console port
A more unified culture that actually wants to be around each other while still respecting the various hierarchies that are in place within each sub-culture.
Right now I'm a mix between PC and console, and earlier this summer I leaned more towards PC but then my computer blew up, so until I can afford a new one, I'm literally stuck on console..
I'd also like to add that the myth of "you have to keep upgrading your PC to play games" is completely false, you don't have to upgrade anything especially if there hasn't been any breakthrough in technology and even then you still don't have to upgrade and you'll still be gaming at a better quality than current gen consoles. Most people who do game on PC choose to game on PC because it is upgradable, we always have the OPTION and the CHOICE to upgrade when we want.
I've always been pc gaming, but only in the last few years has it overshadowed my consoles. Especially recently I've picked my favorite rpg Dark Souls for pc and it's been amazing. I'm hoping it's success on pc will be recognized by other Japanese developers.
I don't go for PC gaming because I don't have the money to constantly invest in the hardware necessary to be always up to date. Not the case with any specific console.
The only reason people go for consoles is that its pretty hard to find a pc that could run every game. As for consoles, u dont have to worry about CPU or Graphics cards
im still sticking to traditional console.Born with it & moulded by it.if there is any ps3 game competition i'll like to be a part of it.Racing,fps,3ps,adventure
Building a decent pc rig will most likely cost you about $800, if you know how to shop for parts. Over time you just got to worry about a new graphics card and maybe every 6 years upgrade your rig. I've made my rig 6 years ago and it can still play current games without any lags and I've only spent about $500 bucks.
Most people would argue it was Atari that had far more to do with modern home consoles than Nintendo. Atari 2600 was 1977, NES didn't launch till 1985.
As a PC gamer, I believe that usually PC gaming is for hardcore gamers, and consoles are for casual gamers. Obviously there are more casual gamers in the world, so that means more console gamers. But unfortunately no matter how you play games on a console, you will never be able to truthfully say your a hardcore gamer.
Yup, that's one thing that consoles will always do better than a PC. It's really the only advantage that I've manage to find that the consoles have over the PC, they don't have windows in their way and their games get developed specifically for that hardware.
You can still play the game online, steam itself will just be in offline mode. This is a big benefit that we have over the consoles, when PSN when down you couldn't play ANY of your games online and were completely cut off, if Xbox live would go down the same thing would happen, if Steam goes down that's just steam...if the individual servers of each of the games you have are still up you can still play on them.
I went back to PC gaming had an Xbox 360 you can do more on PC, both console and PC will always be around it does not matter what you play on as long as you have fun and enjoyment.
What I meant to say was COD does not have alot of destructable pieces so that takes alot of pressur off of other resources running the game. that way the game can focus more on framerate rather than on how many buildings can be blown up without compensating character performance. sorry about that.
I don't understand why you keep saying that the PC gamer will need to upgrade to play the same games you'll be playing with your console when he already has a machine that runs them twice as fast as yours? You don't need to upgrade anything if you're willing to settle with what you have, once you've built a gaming PC it's already faster than a console, if they choose to upgrade to make it even faster they can if they choose not to they don't have to.
That is true if you're comparing a high end pc. But you can make a PC that's faster and more efficient than the consoles. They have plenty of low profile parts to generate less heat and use less power as well.
Lots of people will hate you for that comment, but you have a really good point. Money and price is a big factor, but while PC as a platform can be expensive, you don't need the most powerful one to play. PC games drop prices quickly, too. All those people making comments about Steam sales and all so price could work both ways ... or you could be right and it's always about the price of the console at face-value that catches people's attention first.
Up until like a month ago I was an xbox player. But when I got assassin's creed for the pc I got the hang of things, and now I play Battlefield 3 on both PC and Xbox. (though, my favourite console are still going to be xbox, the glorious little machine that brought me into gaming)
I used to play just PC games but after 1month of console gaming I changed my mind, its quicker and easier than all that pc nonsence, vga, cpu, ram....ect.
To be honest I still want them to make consoles because to have PC gaming you need a really good computer and some people can't afford it. But both are great!
Not really. Most of the people from there plays in gaming cafes. And most of the gaming cafes from there has decent gaming PCs for almost all demanding games out there.
consoles don't play on high, they play on lower settings, like said above, they play with no anti-aliasing, low texture quality, 720p resolution capped at 30FPS, with all other detail settings set to low or medium. Also, I'm not a very good example, as I paid $1,500 building my gaming rig, but it will last me a good 10 strong years before I need to upgrade for games. But I apologize for being a bad example/stereotype.
Anything can get hacked, Sony and Microsoft both have been hacked more often than Steam has. But in that cause, you run it in offline mode and can play all your games without it even having to connect to the internet.
Also, you'd be the very very small percentage that actually hates Steam. There is a reason why Steam owns around 70% of the online game distribution on PC. It works flawlessly, contracted Skype to make it's voice chat and the sound quality is amazing and you can have as many people chatting in a chat group as you'd like.
Why do people have to argue about PC vs console gaming? It's both gaming and both sides have good and bad things. In the end it's comes down to opinions and you should never argue about opinions.
No, it aint the same. With xbox live gold you get to play multiplayer, get some discounts and free avatars. On PS3 you play multiplayer for free... With plus you get free games (this month I got over 200$ worth of gret games for free), also you get free themes, closed betas, avatars and some exclusive content such as dlc's or trailers...
Each platform is great in different aspects, I happen to own a Pc and a PS3 and love both equally. Graphics don't mean anything if a game feels amazing and plays well. I hate it when console fanboys say Pc has no exclusives, but I also hate it when Pc fanboys say Pc is better because of the graphics.
honestly, give me a Japanese gaming keyboard in the 'standard' layout and I would love to buy it. Even when buying a computer, there is no ability to get a Japanese computer without reformatting, re-purchasing, and buying all the 'extras'.
I don't understand how it is expensive if you can just build a decent pc for about £400 and get the games half the price as you would on console? I will always play on both but still.
I would think that parts are probably a lot of money just like in Australia meaning that it's not a completely accessible thing in Japan so I kinda understand it
As we speak Steam is having a sale on Saints Row the third with 66% off, I got that game when it was 75% for 10 bucks now it's 14 with the slightly lower sale. You can't even find that game on console used for under 30 dollars.
well you think wrong. everyone assumes you need a super high spec setup to game on the pc when just upgrading a current pc can look just as nice or better than a console game with about the same price. we also pay less for games (the trade-off is we cant sell them) and if you want better hardware you just upgrade individual parts instead of having to buy a whole new console.
the thing with pc games is that if you wanna keep up with the most recent games and play it on high or ultra you have to update your graphics card. i already changed my graphics card twice and my ps3 is still the same. so budget wise considering our tough economy right now console > Pc. but graphics hands down pc > console
I used to be a straight up console player but I now game on pc more than I do on console one thing for sure I like about pc gaming is it looks much better when playing a game but I don't mind jumping on the console every once in a while to play with some friends and have a good time
That doesn't negate any of my points. You're just clarifying how powerful PCs can be. Also, playing on an emulator is usually not as much fun as playing on the Wii with actual legal GC controllers at tournaments. The only time emulators are fun to use is if it's a GBA emulator for smartphones or the sort.
You can mod consoles too... I just took a cheap cooling pad with 3 fans and blue led's and put it under my PS3 and it looks great... And I spent only 6$ ;)
So you're saying that having several different systems hooked up to a TV which probably won't have enough plugs for all of the systems to hook in and you'd have to keep unplugging and plugging in different systems when you want to play them is better than having everything in one place with the controller of your choice? That really makes no sense whatsoever and just seems like a pain in the ass there is absolutely no reason why that would be better which is why you didn't state one.
i have pc xbox and ps3. i the consoles both for under 400 together. i use them to test the games i burn with my pc. and thats how i pay for my upgrades. if you have a way to get the money buy a pc a premium setup wont run you over 700. and all the games and mods are free. its like buying food thats a little more expensive healthier food, vs eating hotdogs and mcdonalds. plus youll gain more tech knowledge
Honestly, I grew up with consoles. About a few years ago, I got into PC gaming, and I love it! The problem is that not a lot of my friends play on PC, and Halo is not on PC anymore. I play my Xbox more than my PC, of course. Steam is so amazing, though. It has so many games and an excellent VAC secured online system, so no hackers. It's so fun to mod in single player games! The possibilities are end less! Steam provides weekly insane sales. I got Just Cause 2 a few weeks ago for only 3 bucks!
Oh that's not going to be a problem, but you should worry about consoles becoming more media oriented than gaming. The next gen consoles are a very small upgrade in hardware and are focusing more on the things a smart tv would do. Not much is expected gaming wise since the new xbox will have a card equivalent to a 6670 in performance which is already considered bottom end by todays standards
That guy saying Xbox is popular in Japan is the first time I've heard someone say that.
People here in Japan are very loyal to their own product, no wonder why Sony and Nintendo are so successful here than any windows PC or Xbox360.

but after reading this comment i might reconsider what i think i can't feel bad about console users for being bashed when they do the same to us pc gamers
Games need to be designed around the weakest link (consoles), imagine what games would look like today without them bottlenecking developers.
I still remember when I first played Planetside, I couldn't help but just stare at the carnage with 100's of people and vehicles fighting over a base whilst the night sky is getting light up by bullets, lasers and air vehicles blowing up. what is the tokyo district dedicated to pc gaming?
***** There more anime, idol and console games stuff than PC gaming in Akihabara, is more a pop cuture and hobbyist district
***** But thanks for answering, i thought that there was a more dedicated district for PC and competitive gaming
***** Aihabara. Like that place in Log Horizon.
They're expensive as fuck.
Look at the root problem why the Japanese don't bother with PC gaming in the first place..
The only thing I don't like about PC gaming is been worried if the graphic's card, of CPU, etc is going to be enough for play a game every year, which is something good for consoles, you spend $300-$500 in a console and be happy for at least 5-6 years without worry if the console is gonna be enough for play all the games.
Consoles are basically dead in Japan too.
Smart phones dominate Japan now.
SuperNintendoFanboy Hope mobile market takes over more market share It disguist me that Japanese publisher (SEGA) hates PC gaming so much
SuperNintendoFanboy No shit most kids in Japan plays consoles
Musashi Godstrike isnt that the same for North America
been gaming on PC since 2007 and ive loved it ever since
love this vid gamespot. good job

Currently playing Borderlands 2 on PC. I got my first gaming PC after playing current-gen Xbox for 4 years into it's lifecycle
Don't forget that you can always play those exclusive on a PC as well.
Those were the good old days, but those days are now gone :'(
A more unified culture that actually wants to be around each other while still respecting the various hierarchies that are in place within each sub-culture.
Right now I'm a mix between PC and console, and earlier this summer I leaned more towards PC but then my computer blew up, so until I can afford a new one, I'm literally stuck on console..
I remember one of the perks of having a console is to be able to buy used games and you'd get instant access to all of the content, well not anymore.
I'd also like to add that the myth of "you have to keep upgrading your PC to play games" is completely false, you don't have to upgrade anything especially if there hasn't been any breakthrough in technology and even then you still don't have to upgrade and you'll still be gaming at a better quality than current gen consoles. Most people who do game on PC choose to game on PC because it is upgradable, we always have the OPTION and the CHOICE to upgrade when we want.
thats the whole point pcs dont change every 2 years you have to buy a new graphics card instead of paying $300-$400 on a new one every 4-7 years
I've always been pc gaming, but only in the last few years has it overshadowed my consoles. Especially recently I've picked my favorite rpg Dark Souls for pc and it's been amazing. I'm hoping it's success on pc will be recognized by other Japanese developers.
good point! but speaking and playing games with friends daily without inviting them over is also fun :D
I don't go for PC gaming because I don't have the money to constantly invest in the hardware necessary to be always up to date.
Not the case with any specific console.
I am a pc gamer because i dont have money to by a console
The only reason people go for consoles is that its pretty hard to find a pc that could run every game. As for consoles, u dont have to worry about CPU or Graphics cards
yeah finally got back into pc gaming after almost 10 years
im still sticking to traditional console.Born with it & moulded by it.if there is any ps3 game competition i'll like to be a part of it.Racing,fps,3ps,adventure
thank you! Good to know there's more players like me out there.

It's always cheaper to buy parts and build yourself, never go retail.
Good thought man! And I'm glad that I could fin another sane person in these comments that don't want to start an argument ;)
This guy is one of the smartest people on commentating right now
gone back to PC? im never leaving PC!
And controllers are available for PC as well.
I went back to PC gaming had an Xbox 360 you can do more on PC, both console and PC will always be around it does not matter what you play on as long as you have fun and enjoyment.

That is true if you're comparing a high end pc. But you can make a PC that's faster and more efficient than the consoles. They have plenty of low profile parts to generate less heat and use less power as well.
We shall settle this with a duel.
Gaming is gaming, no matter what platform you like to play on. I suppose with PC gaming, you can go straight onto Youjizz once you're finished.
Lots of people will hate you for that comment, but you have a really good point. Went back on PC, been about 5 years since I gamed on PC, now that I remember PC gaming has grown
To be honest I still want them to make consoles because to have PC gaming you need a really good computer and some people can't afford it. But both are great!
No i meant BUY it, you know, it's easier for a beginner.
Not really. Most of the people from there plays in gaming cafes. And most of the gaming cafes from there has decent gaming PCs for almost all demanding games out there.

World Of Warcraft itself has more players online than both consoles together
Even if the number isn't that Big, I wouldn't change my Dota 2, Guild Wars 2 and all valve games for nothing.
The real problem is setting up and using a pc requires an inkling of intelligence which the general public seem to be lacking
Why do people have to argue about PC vs console gaming? It's both gaming and both sides have good and bad things. In the end it's comes down to opinions and you should never argue about opinions.

no it doesn't the ratio of people that play console compared to PC is astonishing console definitely wins in the popularity category
I don't understand how it is expensive if you can just build a decent pc for about £400 and get the games half the price as you would on console? I will always play on both but still.
not true when u include every multiplayer game and every person that plays them but wow still has most players
Its more about how you like to play your games. These days you can get most games on all platforms.
Went from console to pc, I don't regret my decision.
some of us use an xbox 360 controller
and no its not a hack
dont judge a book by its cover
I would think that parts are probably a lot of money just like in Australia meaning that it's not a completely accessible thing in Japan so I kinda understand it

There are almost 300,000,000 PC Gamers.
Japan not playing PC Games isn't hurting anyone.
And I spent only 6$ ;)
I don't know (: Alot of people still love the traditional JRPGs prevalent on handhelds now (:
So you're saying that having several different systems hooked up to a TV which probably won't have enough plugs for all of the systems to hook in and you'd have to keep unplugging and plugging in different systems when you want to play them is better than having everything in one place with the controller of your choice? That really makes no sense whatsoever and just seems like a pain in the ass there is absolutely no reason why that would be better which is why you didn't state one.

Shall i just stop now?
I have a gaming rig and I love it, but I would rather sit on my couch with a controller in my hand than with a keyboard and mouse
i have pc xbox and ps3. i the consoles both for under 400 together. i use them to test the games i burn with my pc. and thats how i pay for my upgrades. if you have a way to get the money buy a pc a premium setup wont run you over 700. and all the games and mods are free. its like buying food thats a little more expensive healthier food, vs eating hotdogs and mcdonalds. plus youll gain more tech knowledge
I'm surprised by this considering how good their internet is compared to ours(USA).
Yes, which is why it's also great that pc games have more depth.
I would also like to thank you for reinforcing my point, paying 600 dollars for only 15 games is ridiculous....even 20 games it's still too much.
R.I.P Retail Games :P
CONSOLES are the reason we still have 2005 graphics in today's games.
