I’m a little late because I’m new but if you take the plastic sleeve out of the tip of the zebra x-701 it will fit the space pen refill best of both worlds
I found that Nite Ize DoohicKey at the store a while back and fell in love. The difference maker is it's a simple multi-tool with prybar, bottle opener, box tape cutter, but it has the carabiner clip so it's essentially just a keyring to me. With so many additional "just in case" options without greatly increasing the size of a keyring, it's a very efficient use of space. At $4, it's also damn cheap so you have to love that. Having used it for about a year now, I'd highly recommend it if looking for a keyring that can do more.
Midnight manager victorinox is about the same size but introduces a pen function and also bottle opener. In addition a lot of people don’t realize this but the blade on the midnight manager is on the opposite side of the key ring this allows you to use the blade easily while attached to your Keyes. The SD model has the blade on the key side which is a little annoying when trying to cut something.
As a Direct Support Professional, the Fisher Space Pen is a great hefty pen that gets the job done never had it strand me while writing up my 4 or 5 paragraphs of notes. The nice thing is that it’s waterproof so I use a field notes notebook Expedition Edition to take notes while dealing with stuff out in the community.
Love my Gerber shard, I mainly use it as bottle opener. It works well with my keys, doesn't get in the way. The pen I carry is the Fxmd (F701) and I put it through a lot at my job, but its held up fantastically so far.
It makes sense to me to be willing to buy expensive stuff cause I tend toward minimalism in some ways, I like to buy it once and get the maximum lifespan and utility out of an item. But, I also have a place for cheaper stuff - easy to buy multiple copies to have one in each bag and not have to think about it, and I can have stuff attached to the outside of my bag or in my back pocket in the city and accept the risk of losing it. Also great for small gifts to tempt friends to join me in my EDC obsession :P
I didn’t hear you mention it, but when it comes to the pens the zebra f-701 can also take a space pen insert! You just have to use a toothpick to take a small piece of plastic out of the top of the pen! I have used that kind of pen at work for the past year and I’ll never go back. Fun fact, the zebra F-701 perfectly fits a fisher space pen refill inside it. So if you want that space pen reliability but are not a fan of the look just put a refill in the F-701!
Parker G2 style refills wheel, not a Pilot G2. In mine I've used a trimmed Zebra Sarasa refill (emulsion ink), an Ohto Rays Flash Dry (gel ink), and a Fisher Space pen refill. They're really great bombproof pens with great grip. 👍🏽

I LOVE the gerber dime in concept. The back of the bottle opener adds just enough length and has just enough angle to nest in my palm for one of the most comfortable plier in its size. The tool spread is great for me. Aside from the joke files, I have used and like every tool. It rides nice in the pocket. Problem is lots of small quality control things. Plier tips match up, a scale not sitting flat. Would gladly pay that higher price if it's a quality control improvement. U also like the shuffle. The 2.0 not so much but the original I recommend. I need to go back and hear his complaints.
Didn't realize these things I have and like are a trend. I have always had a "thing" for a certain kind of keyring or pocket pen, knife, clips. I have many of the ones you show in this vid - the titanium key ring(s), Nite Ize DoohicKey, (a lot of Nite-Ize stuff from way back when they started), the Gerber razor blade knife, Aircraft Cable Keychain... and so much more. I have a lot of vintage stuff since I have been around for quite awhile. Really enjoyed your video. Thanks!
I mean I understand why a lot of guys enjoy extensive EDCs just to be ready but I have carried a gerber suspension multi tool and a gerber air ranger folder in conjunction with smaller cheap flashlights for 3 years straight and had zero issues. On top of that I've used the gerber suspension and the air ranger in heavy duty construction work and field dressing animals.
After a SAK and a flashlight, most of my EDC is cheap stuff I pick up and put in my pockets: rubber bands stored on the end of my flashlight, a stick pen (useful as a general purpose stick-like-object), a few folded sheets of paper, a leftover shopping bag (my most useful item after my knife and flashlight, flattens to nothing in the back pocket), 3 to 4 feet of paracord (great for bundling and carrying stuff, as a cat toy, etc.), and a lighter in the winter. I find that things which can be consumed and replaced often have more creative uses then things I have to preserve.
The package opener is what I like best on my Gerber dime & it fits perfect in my watch pocket .I thought about the Zebra F-701 and decided to go with the Zebra StylusPen Telescopic Ballpoint Pen and it fits great in my pocket even while sitting. As for flashlight I carry the Streamlight 66608 250 Lumen Microstream USB Rechargeable Flashlight until I lost it today and will go on Amazon tomorrow and order another even at $40 I will replace it when ever I need to. In my right pocket I carry usually a Spyderco, Kershaw or my trusty Benchmade mini Barrage, amongst others.
man, could you please share how you install the Nato Strap on your watch? It does not seem usual, and believe that it does not pass below the watch but directly over your hand? I guess it is beneficial if one wants to apply Nato strap in a watch with a heart rate sensor? Appreciate if you could share the Nato strap model as well! Nice watch btw!
i carry the virtorinox classic and the Dime for a few years now. Work in an office and do regular light handywork for myself. What was surprising to me is how much use i got out of the voctorinox scissors and the Dime box cutter. The quality of the victorinox is superb and holds great though the years, can't recommencement it enough, the quality of the Dime is... acceptable for its price.
Uh my personal fav on cheap flashlight was 1 that had 2 battery things where it had an internal plug and charge battery and a back compartment for a single AA battery if you were somewhere where charging isn't a option
I often find myself asking myself “what would a tiny piece of metal like that come in handy for” along with it looking useless and silly then shortly after I’ll end up needing one for the most random situations. Not to mention I happen to make a borderline fool of myself just cause I didn’t have a mini pry bar hidden in the little pocket of my jeans
That Gerber wallet is way underrated. It is super useful and well rounded, robust. Holds everything I need, and didn't take all my money to hold it. If you want RFID blocking just buy a plate for it.
I have had the shuffle for several years now and i have tried other small budget folders but I keep coming back to it. There is something about the simplicity and functionality of the design.
Yeah if I go back to a dedicated knife (right now I mainly use a utility knife and also have a full sized Multitool) my shuffle would be an easy choice.
My new key setup: attached a belt holder to a good clip I got at tandy leather, car key hangs on one split ring, keysmart hangs on another. Keysmart holds 3 keys and my Gerber Mullet
I would also recommend the True Utility Smartknife+. It is $10 USD and has built in file, wrenches of various sizes, bit driver, flat heads, prybar, with a liner lock serrated blade. I also owned the Gerber folding razor in the video. It is also around $10 and is SO practical. I used to clip it underneath the bill of my ballcap. Looks inconspicuous and is real simple, even one handed
The refills for the space pen include an adapter to make them compatible with standard Parker ball point pens. That the Jotter uses. And the Jotter with a space pen refill is still less than $20, and if you write a lot the Jotter will feel far better in your hand than the Zebra or the bullet pen.
I carry a nite ize doohickey and a Swiss army classic SD everywhere I go and that's the lightest, most useful combo I've found. I've had a Leatherman micra for over a decade but it's a lot heavier and I really don't need all the excess weight when the little Swiss army knife and doohickey do everything I need. I love the doohickey cause it's cheap and clips on my keys and doesn't weigh anymore than an extra key. Plus the box cutter edge is super nice for when you wanna cut tape but are concerned about damaging the contents of the box. I use those two tools daily and honestly prefer them to a lot of more expensive options because I'm less worried about losing them. For me, the best edc multitool is the one I always can have with me, and that combo is so much more comfortable to carry than anything else I've tried. The micra is great but after awhile the scissors will dull and the tools on it aren't much more comfortable or usable than the classic SD, so I don't see it as being worth the weight. Plus with the Swiss army knife I get a toothpick and I dont use that often but when I need it I'm always so thankful it's there.
Another good edc pen option is the Tombow Airpress. It's plastic, but fairly robust in my experience. It's got a fat body and it's rubberized so the grip is great. It pressurizes the ink when you click the plunger and the ink is more consistent than the Space Pen refills. A standout feature for me is the lanyard ring. I use a tiny split ring to attach it to a retractable badge lanyard and clip it to my work vest so I have instant access to a pressurized pen at all times.
I use Parker jotters with Fisher space pen refill, I recently treated myself to the Fisher ag7 which is the pen used on the apollo missions. And the form factor is similar to the jotter.
i have decided to get involved in edc due to the fact that i always grab my wallet but constantly fail to grab a knife and always find i need it plus a flash light and pen picked up a cheap no name leather organizer similar to a cardcaddy but plan on making a custom later on your channel has been a ton of help and a lot of fun to watch
I find the gerber shard to be annoying in the pocket when attached to my keys. Had it on for about 2 weeks, it kept stabbing me in the leg and I don't think I used it once, not worth it IMO. If you want a keychain multitool, get something flat without the nail remover (or anything that might curve into your leg)
I got the Doohickey for emergencies thinking I would never use it. I must use that thing 5 to six times a day!! From opening bottles to screwing in my key organizer. I even used it today to fix a doggie gate! Amazing tool!!
I waited forever to try Gerber shard. Can't believe how much i use it. Mostly scraping and peeling since I bite my nails and the nail pry center cuts ties on boxes and toys easily. One of those id's never like but turns out use a lot.
Leatherman Micra is basically a fingernail kit in a tool. I find it heavy -- take it on travels but don't like to carry it. If you want a file, scissors, knife in one small light package get the Victorinox classic. I have given many as gifts and everyone keeps it on their key chain and they find it so handy. The knife is small but is sharp and it does cut! I bought the Zebra F-701 pen for my nephew and he loves it. Personally I use disposable plastic pens -- Zebras always write well, I find. Can't say enough about the Olight I1R EOS rechargeable flashlight -- has helped me many a time in dark stairwells, getting my seat belt on in the back of car etc. I recharge it about once every 4 months on my computer. Makes a great gift. Those steel cable aren't the greatest -- I found they unscrew over time so I stopped using them. Thank you for another great video!
That Zebra pen has been my daily driver for the classroom and machine shop my entire college career. Only gripe is their refill cartridges are hit or miss.
Joseph if need to get a multi functional pen . Look at B2 skill craft it's a brass with black cerakote . It's .5 pencil and blue, black or red ink. So you wouldn't need to carry multiple pens . Very slim profile pen I have been carrying mine in the machine shop I work at . My carry in the shop is B2 pen and Milwaukee inks all streamlight stylus pro which has been modified of course a 6" scale . All rides in our red cap work shirts . I carry other tools to help me in the shop when I away from my tool box . I carry a Milwaukee 6 and 1 RZR screwdriver I carry a metal tin with Milwaukee quarter inch drive hex bits from 12 mm to 3 mm carry Milwaukee torx 10 to 20 various Philips one two and three Robinson flat drivers 2 in extension a Craftsman 1/4 inch ratchet knipex Cobra XS pliers and a right in the rain poker pin it's a lot to carry .I carry it in chums surf wallet . These little tools can help me in anything in the machine shop from changing inserts to getting into a panel of the machine or just tighten various fasteners.
Don't forget that opinel knives offer fantastic steel for $15, and have 3.25" of blade at only 1.6 ounces. (That CRKT squid is 2.16" and 3.5oz, for reference). Just buy an aftermarket thumb stud for one-handed opening.
I have carried & used that Gerber utility knife for years... love it! Keep an eye on the blade screw! Lenox blades. The best blade I have used in any utility knife!
The screw on mine broke right after I changed the blade for the first time. Got a cheap Mossy Oak folding utility knife that's about the same size and has a quick change blade holder.
The most useful keychain scraper I ever had was the parachute keychain. Titanium. But it had a wide area, and when I was operating an industrial laser cutter, it was the most used thing. It could pry, but most useful was the side scraper, which I used A LOT to clean off areas that had labels, tape, grease or some corrosion that would interfere with the laser. And due to the hardness it barely got worn and wouldn't damage the material. It sucks for actually opening bottles though, and I've never used it for anything but scraping and prying.
Not sure if the different style of Gerber dimes have it, but the one I bought years ago has a little pair of tweezers too. There's a little tiny tab on the end of the one plate they slide in to
The "Dime" IS an excellent tool. I have a leatherman sidekick and I carry the Dime more than the Sidekick. It has saved my butt quite a few times. But I definitely recommend it.
I've had the Gerber eab light for about a year now. It's small, light, and sharp. It's also all metal and has a thicker clip that wont bend of let loose. Theres so many different razors to put on it too
I have switched to using Pokka Pens. They are like the old bullet pencils, very sturdy, and fit easily in a pocket or Altoids tin. They aren't fancy, but very useful.
For knife i would recommend pretty much any hultafors which range alot theres ones with serrated edges, files on the side of the blade, gripped handles and not gripped handles, chisel knives, and the best one Hultafors 380270 "Ok4 Outdoor Knife made for edc
The SOK Classic SD, the actual one with plastic scales, has two other tools that aren't on the Alox version (any Alox version of any SOK will be without these) and you failed to mention them. It has tweezers and a tooth pick. The tooth pick can be replaced with an aftermarket mini ferro rod.
Great video! Also, how you carry some things can make a difference. I love the Doohickey and carry it on a ball chain necklace for easy access. I have lost things off my keyring before, so I limit what I put on it. Also, it disperses bulk a lot better. Just a note, I know you don't really like the Kershuffles (I do, I have a couple of 2s!) but for a budget knife, sometimes Walmart will carry older model Kershaws at well below their original price, and I have picked up a few good blades this way. Carry on, good sir!
I put a large split ring in a hole on my belt. That I use metal lobster claws to grab the split ring with. For my keys, leatherman squirt, whistle, and jewelers eyeglass screw driver set. The whole set up with cheap. I have never replaced nothin. The only thing I might replace is the belt. If I do I am puttin a hole in the belt for the set up. after edit: I value not loosing my stuff for as cheap as I can get. Hence I have a ton of respect for the split ring. I can do all the things you are talking about with a time tested split ring. With out the fear of my stuff being lost like ever. Also the Kershaw shuffle is better than a squid. Why is that? It offers a pry bar, and bottle opener at least.
Zebra F-701 pen with a 6 dollar Fisher Space Pen refill that replaces the G-18 ink that it comes with. Just take a pin to push out the plastic tip in the end of the zebra pen and you have the best EDC pen.
Gerber shard has the further utility on the head of the pry as both sides are various sized flag heads :) and it’s thin enough to cut taped boxes and such
I have a store near me that has knives for $7-8 Dollars and 4 for $25. I found multiple gerbers, victornox, sog, Kershaw, and Buck knives. I love that store. I got a Kershaw leek from there too. I recently got 8 knives for $50 there. I got Gerber knives, victornox knives, and sog, and Kershaw knives.
I had some of those cables for my keys. I used it for like a year and a half, and it started to fray, don't remember the brand, but started using the S clips and haven't gone back. After watching this video I might find them and switch my keys back since I added more to my keys.
Gerber mullet, I got a stayglo classic SD, chums wallet fish scales, buck 726 mini spitfire, lumintop EDC 02, nite Ize inka pen, I already had the mullet but all that gear was $115.00 on Amazon.
Not too shabby, practical, applicable, realistic. But the budget EDC types are meant to be something to get you started that way you get an idea of how you personally everyday carry then you save up for the better stuff that will last you a lifetime. But I didn't write very well done I couldn't have said it better myself or shown any better myself they're good job.
Just as an fyi, Fisher pens rule but the Fisher telescoping pen is such a better option than the bullet as you dont have to deal w having a pen cap making it easy to lose your pen also the Fisher Trekker is an overlooked option, It's made for hard use EDC. Also, I buy the cable key rings from WISH (I know; dirty word), $2 for 10. They have several sizes and not one has failed. I've bought many and I have loaded them up (after checking first) really solid and as I said not one fail in over 30 rings.
I love my lumintop tool aa it can as a kit with rechargeable lithium ion battery diffuser I've been carrying it every day for about 2 years in a mag light holster I super glued the bottom shut
my fisher pen has the stylus attachment, which in my experience is worth the extra $ because at the time I bought it, I was working with technology on a more regular basis. nowadays my second gig is more construction-lite so I can get away with a more robust "kit" which is easy thanks to the Maxpedition fatty. it's got room for a small crow/pry, my Leatherman Surge, the Surefire Micro, a few pens mostly Pilot G2s plus the fisher, my Kershaw Spoke, and lastly eye pro. I generally keep my keys and garage fob on the carabine that came with my Black Diamond Ion all that said, I genuinely miss wearing a watch one last thing, the mini aircraft cable "ties" as you said, they do break or they come with some sort of factory defects like the thread not being a clean 1:1

I carry it and use the tooth pick and tweezers the most as I carry a larger blade. It’s always with my keys so I always have a knife just in case.
You should mention that Victorinox Classic in plastic version has two additional tools, which are tweezers and a toothpick. These comes quite handy!
i carry the virtorinox classic and the Dime for a few years now.
Unfortunately i don't remember the brand but it reliable af
I use a write-in-rain pen in blaze orange for my EDC. Its simple, easy to see, and writes like a dream.
Me: *Buys Kershaw Shuffle*
Taylor: “I no longer recommend the Kershaw Shuffle”
He's sleep deprived, yeah that's it, he's sleep deprived.
😂
I have had the shuffle for several years now and i have tried other small budget folders but I keep coming back to it. There is something about the simplicity and functionality of the design.
Yeah if I go back to a dedicated knife (right now I mainly use a utility knife and also have a full sized Multitool) my shuffle would be an easy choice.
I'm curious about what makes the Squid better than the Shuffle with both of them using the same blade steel.
My new key setup: attached a belt holder to a good clip I got at tandy leather, car key hangs on one split ring, keysmart hangs on another. Keysmart holds 3 keys and my Gerber Mullet
Most all my EDC stuff is under 35$ dollars and I upgrade slowly but it works for me thank you for you channel
Parker jotter. By far my favorite pen. Carry one every day at work. Got my wife hooked on them too
I would also recommend the True Utility Smartknife+.
I've used a chums surf wallet for 10 years now. It's seriously the best thing ever.
I carry a Kershaw DIY, what don't you like about the knife?
What version of the Ontario Rat do you suggest? I wanted to look it up but there's a LOT of them and I don't know which to look for.
I use Parker jotters with Fisher space pen refill,
I recently treated myself to the Fisher ag7 which is the pen used on the apollo missions.
I spent many hours watching your phone reviews back in the day. Nice surprise to find you again.
Ive carried the gerber eab utility knife for years and i love it
What is his shirt supposed to read (say), does anyone know? Thanks.
I use the Gerber Shard, and use it all the time for a bottle opener, or to open paint cans.
I read "EDC gear" on the title and saw a pocket knife and I thought to myself "Who the hell would take a knife to a rave?!" 😂 😂 😂
How else are you going to split the Molly when you and your friends are on a budget?
@@Ker-f4o you're right!
Don't forget that opinel knives offer fantastic steel for $15, and have 3.25" of blade at only 1.6 ounces. (That CRKT squid is 2.16" and 3.5oz, for reference). Just buy an aftermarket thumb stud for one-handed opening.
whats the lamp in the background?
Awesome little run down, thanks for compiling it and sharing your thoughts on everything.
Pilot G2 Limited for pen. $10-$15. They are releasing a matte black version on Amazon the beginning of April.
There's a little tiny tab on the end of the one plate they slide in to
Fisher space ink refill fits in the F701 as well if you want a cheap space pen!
For the small keychain multi tool there is also the Gerber mullet. It’s 10$ and can be found at outdoor stores like sheels and fleet farm
Yes! I carry this on my keys and use it at least once a week!
Theres so many different razors to put on it too
If you put a screw bit on the niteize tool and wrap it with a rubber band you have a makeshift screwdriver. Ive been doing it for a yr
Couple other items for consideration. Twine, duct tape, mechanical pencil, sharpie, pocket sized whet stone, kraft cahier notebooks. Index cards/holder, signal whistle, safety pins, bandana/hankie
The steel cable keychains have been my go-to over the years. Glad you included them.
The Gerber Dime has a pair of tweezers too. Its now May 2020 and that Trayvax bullet pen is $33
I put a large split ring in a hole on my belt.
Zebra F-701 with Fisher Space Pen refill is what I'm using. Nothing is better IMO, and no biggie if I loose it. $12-13 total.
You have got to try the Kershaw 8800, best small pocket tool for any money. And they are under 20.00. I'm a mechanic and use it alot.
Don't forget the tweezers on the Dime! Oh and the small flat head can be used on certain Phillips heads.
+1 for the shackle key organiser, dirt cheap and does the job perfectly, used one for years until I made a wider version out of a bit of flat bar.
I just ordered a ka-bar dozier. Heard really good things and the price was hard to beat. Plus for a couple more bucks you can get it in D2
I tried to keep it around 100, buck you could switch with Ganzo fh91.
Ka bar dozier as well, I forgot that one.
I added a bit of tread locker to my wire key ring and it works like a charm ! I’ve snagged it on soo many things and never had it break on me
Zebra pen has been my edc pen for the last 1.5yr . Absolutely the greatest budget pen ever.
The victorinox classic sd in red can be bought at Walmart's for 11 or 12 bucks as well.
Wich watch brand is he using? Looks good!
I love my lumintop tool aa it can as a kit with rechargeable lithium ion battery diffuser I've been carrying it every day for about 2 years in a mag light holster I super glued the bottom shut
Ive carried the Gerber Dime Travel for years. It replaces the blade with a functionally sized file.
my fisher pen has the stylus attachment, which in my experience is worth the extra $ because at the time I bought it, I was working with technology on a more regular basis.
nowadays my second gig is more construction-lite so I can get away with a more robust "kit" which is easy thanks to the Maxpedition fatty. it's got room for a small crow/pry, my Leatherman Surge, the Surefire Micro, a few pens mostly Pilot G2s plus the fisher, my Kershaw Spoke, and lastly eye pro. I generally keep my keys and garage fob on the carabine that came with my Black Diamond Ion
all that said, I genuinely miss wearing a watch
one last thing, the mini aircraft cable "ties" as you said, they do break or they come with some sort of factory defects like the thread not being a clean 1:1
When people have beads more expensive than multitools I have I feel poor.🥺
