My father’s family was born and raised in Charleston. I have lived here for several years. We have a lot of people who have moved hear from other states because we have a lot of big businesses that have moved into the area. They brought their food and have mixed it with the original southern food and now we have a fusion. The food that they are eating are from new restaurants in Charleston and it is more like fusion southern food. Southern biscuits are made only with flour and those look like they had cornmeal in them, making them a fusion of cornbread and biscuits. It’s sad because when newcomers move into the area, they think they are getting real southern food but they are not. You need to find an old timer whose been here all of there life so that they could point out the restaurants that sell original southern food. She mentioned S.N.O.B., they sell some of the original.foods. 😊

I'm from The Bronx, but my parents are from Georgetown county SC. I moved to Andrews (not St. Andrews) where my mother is from in 1976. I think the last time I had a pimento cheese sandwich was in 1990 after I left Germany (1983-1990). The last time I had shrimp and grits was Nov 2013 when I went back to SC for my grandmothers' funeral. Deana could you please buy some Roger Wood smoke sausage and have Phil try it? I live in Houston Texas and I'll have to drive to Alabama just to get some Rodger Wood. I think Phil might like it.

@@rureal7742 Yes, But the Rodger Wood family own company doesn't sell their sausages outside of the southeast and they don't ship it. There are restaurants that sell grits and shrimp here, but they are all on the other side of town from were I live in 5th ward. When I rode the bus it would take almost two hours to get to any of these locations if there are any bus stops near by. Got my SUV the end of 2019, then Covid happen. To get good pulled pork barbeque, I have to go back to South Carolina because my grandfather had a pig farm and we always pit barbequed a pig 2 or 3 times a year, so I need real pulled pork.

Guess the timing of getting your own SUV to drive places seemed unlucky but at least you saved on gas? I do like good pulled pork. What places in SC would you recommend unless your family still has a farm that's willing to have drooling visitors stop by.

My wife and I just got back from Charleston four days ago, and we also started off our day with a visit to Callie’s HLB. In my opinion, you would’ve done better ordering the full sized breakfast sandwiches. The sausage/pimento cheese was amazing in a warm and crumbly buttermilk biscuit barely holding together. Not dry at all, compared to the small flavored biscuits that you got.
82 Queen, great crispy fried chicken livers.
Pink Bellies, Garlic KFC chicken wings, Pho Mai double cheeseburger and soft shell crab on a milk bun with shrimp pâté….amazing!
Hannibal’s Soul Kitchen, not a tourist spot, named one of top places to eat in the US by the New York Times. Crab/shrimp rice, ribs, cabbage…words fail me they were so delicious.

I love the southern food tour - most of it I have never heard of. We're in Seattle this month and eating Mexican almost every day. The thing I miss most and cannot get right now is oysters (and scallops!) because even though you can get them, the heat dome has made it dangerous to eat shellfish. So I'm walking the beaches, crunching on the shells and barnacles but we're sticking to just local fish & chips. We've taken the ferries 4 times and usually we eat clam chowder on board but due to covid, there's no food on the ferries, bummer. It's been 5 weeks and I still miss nothing about Germany.

Well, Mahi Mahi is around $12/lb and that was easily a 6oz filet so $4.50 just for the fish. Most restaurants the rule of thumb to make sure you get somewhere close to 10% profit on food is food cost × 3 + $1. So they are below that price point and likely make it up on alcohol which is typically marked up 300-400%.

I haven't been to Charleston in a long time. I was stationed there when I was in the Navy, my ship was home ported there. We lived in West Ashley back then. I recall there being some very nice seafood joints that my and the ex really loved. Overall, Charleston was a good time.

You should have headed over to Folly Beach and ate at LOLa or Bowen’s Island, right befor Folly Beach is Bohemian Bull. Those three places are great. He should try the She Crab Soup, Frogmore Stew and of course boiled peanuts!

It's all so casual they don't even put the dollar sign on the menu prices, just an 18 for one dish. Then Phil says they're going to a more expensive place for his 4th meal of the day. 😳

Ok hear me out here. Go back to Germany, complete pastry school in Germany, then move to America. Open up a German/European bakery in America. Make all of the German style bread and pastries. Then all of the things one would have for kaffee and kuchen. Just an idea. ❤️❤️🤤

Please do this!!!!! No matter where you decide to set up shop, it will thrive. I stood in line for 45 minutes in 90° heat in St.Paul for real croissant at the only true Patisserie in the entire Upper Mississippi Valley. It was $7 and worth every penny. (So was the other $58 worth of treats!!!!) You could do a Döner shop, out the back! Ill be road-trippin!!!!!!

Need to find an old timey biscuit maker and make simple Buttermilk and Lard mound Biscuits. They are slightly crunchy outside, fluffy inside mounds of pure pleasure, I like mine with premium grade Butter but you can add any Jelly/Jam/Preserves or syrup of your choice.
