Dodge Ram 1500 Exhaust Manifold Removal & Replace (Driver Side)

  • This video is an in depth step-by-step covering the removal and installation of the drivers side exhaust manifold on a 2011 Dodge Ram Hemi 5.7. The original manifold warped causing two of the bolts to shear off. This will create an exhaust leak and will cause the HEMI tick. The driver side installation is much more complicated than the passenger side due to the steering column, AC lines and dipstick adding salt to the adventure. I will show you how to remove two different types of broken stud bolts. One is sheered off flush with the block and the other is broken but the shaft sticks out of the block. I will show you how to use a welder to extract one of the bolts as an easy out wasn't an option.

    Changed mine yesterday on my 2014 and used your video as a guide. So helpful man, thanks. One thing to note is that the Doorman bolt kit was not available for my year, not sure why, I had trouble getting bolts from any parts store so ended up having to get them from the dealership and for both sides the total was about $135. Love your videos by the way.

      Lukes Garage All done. It was a little more difficult than you made it look lol. Had 2 broken bolts on passenger side, one was sheared flush, got the $89 welder from HF & got it out. On driver’s side, unbolting the steering shaft (1 bolt) made pulling it out and putting it back in much more easy.

    The left side is a much bigger pain just because of the brake lines and steering shaft being in the way. Took my 4 hours to do my first one, but now I've done enough that it's about 90 minutes including averaging one below flush stud extraction.

As long as the mileage does not drop seems like they would not warp like the OEM. My buddy said this happened to his RAM every 40K miles. Only issue he had in 200K miles that was recurring.

    Ive had two Dodge trucks that developed exhaust leaks from warping manifolds. I've never replaced the manifolds out of fear that new ones will warp as well. I ended up spending 4 hours and getting quite a workout to grind the old ones down myself. I figure that the old ones were less likely to continue warping and, therfore, have a more permanent fix.

I have seen other videos of the shorty replacements being a pain because access to the bolts is a noghtmare and long tubes require a whole exaust system replacement. Whats youre recommendation? Or just get high quality replacement hardware and hope it doesn't repeat? What about just getting the headers resurfaced if any warp?

    • @MechanicLife

      I think that sounds pretty realistic. Both manifolds with new bolt kits and markup probably around 350-400. Labor will be about 4-6 hours at $100 an hour.
      But you said just labor...what do they charge an hour? It may be pretty close depending on what they charge an hour. I have had people tell me they've been charged anywhere from 600 for a complete job all the way up to 2k!

Dealership said the other side is good and there is no need to change. But after speaking to the mechanic, he actually admitted that the dealer was trying to cut corners and save money cuz they need to pay due to warranty. Should i be concerned. Thank you in advance.

    • @MechanicLife
      @MechanicLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need to at all if one side is still good. However, I would inspect the bolts to see if any holding the manifold to the block are missing on the side that hasn't. Agreed though that a dealership will do everything to cut corners if its still under warranty.

    Do you think this work could cause rusted bolts on the exhaust pipe under the cab to shake loose? I had this work completed by the dealer. About 35 miles after having it replaced I sprung an exhaust leak, the bolts rusted right apart. When I brought it back to the dealer they said that it was separate from the manifold and was not caused by the work they had just completed. The exhaust repair is not covered under warranty. I wasn't sure what to do so I just left haha.

Second time to put BBK Shorty Headers on... 2 days later they leaked with Remflex gaskets and the best bolts I could buy $1600. The shop said they had to only tighten one bolt 1/4 turn to fix the issue which was highly sus as it sounded like both sides were leaking. It's In a different shop now to see if putting new Remflex gaskets (recommended by BBK) will fix the problem. Only $600 if all goes well.
    DO NOT BUY A CHRYSLER PRODUCT!
    Further: After I told my neighbor about the problem, he later bought a used 1500. After taking it to the shop to get fixed it started again! Guess what problem he still has? I feel his pain.
    🖕🖕 to RAM 👉 At 140K mi I had to rebuild the rear axle $1400. At 150K mi I had to have a new heater core put in $2500... 10 hours to pull the dash to fix it. Then they told me I needed a new AC pump because it locked up when they put the oil back in it. $1200.

      The passenger side was really easy to do. Everything is easily accessible and tons of room. Should take about an hour. The drivers side was more complex. It took me about 3 hours. (Welding ate up a bunch of that time. I was having issues with getting the weld to take to the stud. I would be that the manifold is warped as well. How many miles do you have on it? The gaskets are pretty tough and should last a loooonnnnggg time before failure if the studs are in tact and torqued down.

    Well...the next issue I'm running into is the stock bolts are to long for aftermarket headers? Ever seen this issue before? The thickness with the mounting face of stock headers and aftermarket(DNA CHEAP ONES) are significantly different guessing about .5-.75 of inch difference....my idea is either grinding the bolts down or using washers? Whats your thoughts?

    • @MechanicLife
      @MechanicLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would stay away from using washers. If you have a specialty bolt shop go to them first and see if they have what you need. Then i would take your current bolt to Auto Zone and see if they have what you need in a shorter bolt.
      You can grind them down, but I would be concerned about the exactness and consistency grinding all your bolts down and then being sure about how much you actually need to take them down to make sure you are not bottoming them out into the block. If you go the grinding route make sure to put a screw driver into the hole to see how deep it is and mark the screw driver with a sharpie when its all the way inserted. That way when you pull it out you know how deep the hole is. Hope this helps
