Fun fact: Half of the talking head portion of this video was shot in 12 bit raw, and the other half was the 8 bit proxies. Can you tell the difference?
Now that you mention it and I go back and forth, I can see it easily, especially in the skin tones and the shaprness in your beard. But I definitely not noticed at while watching your review (and i watched it on my callibarted 4K screen🤣). Quite interesting.
@@GriffinConway It's noticable. As I only have 8bit/10bit experience: Would you say there's also a quite noticable difference between 10bit and 12bit in such a controlled scenario?
Philipp Awounou nice! Could you tell before checking the comments? That’s what I was more curious about. The difference between 8 bit and 10 bit is huge in my eyes, but the difference between 10 bit and 12 bit is hardly noticeable in controlled situations. You have to push that grade hard and know where to look for it, like in sky gradiations.
Your videos are clear, to the point and insightful. I found you when I bought my c200. Now running a c200 and 1dx mark iii. Switched from Sony and plan to do some more 'series' stuff. I have recommended your channel. The best camera/video channel I have found. Thank you for no long intro, coffee b roll, or drone footage. Do you think there will be a workaround for doing raw on the 1dx mark iii externally?
Jamesons Travels really appreciate that Jameson! Totally agree on leaving out all the filler content. That’s something I grew tired of as well. I am about 99% sure we won’t see an external raw output for the 1dx iii because I don’t think the mini hdmi port is capable of that data rate. However, whats even better in my opinion is Canon has announced that clog 3 (more dynamic range picture profile) and a lower bitrate raw option (smaller files) is coming to the 1dx iii. So that is good news!
Thanks for giving such a solid review of the two especially from someone who is in the industry! This was extremely helpful. Kinda makes me want to hold off on the 1DX.
Kutrovski thanks for the kind words! Don’t get me wrong, the 1dx Mark iii is still an unbelievable camera. In my opinion it is the best photo/video hybrid camera out by far. It’s just not really designed to replace a cinema camera.

Great video I've been wanting to upgrade from the EOS R to the 1DX then I saw the C200 is the same price you've literally made my decision much easier great informative video
Such a nice comparison, I'm so glad I found your channel man! As a C200 owner, it's really interesting to see that you're using custom picture profiles in Clog3 and Wide DR settings as well as a limiter on your audio. Do you have any suggestions, tips or tricks for those settings or have you already mentioned it in one of your videos? I haven't wrapped my head around this yet since I usually found myself just going for RAW anyways, but seeing you using this inspired me to figure it out more if you say it's worth it? Hey Griffin, love you content and appreciate you taking the time to review and compare these cameras. I am mainly a run and gun shooter who will be shooting mostly docs relating to touring with music and then some weddings. I have a Sony a7iii atm that I could use for photo if needed, if I bought the 1dxiii I would sell the a7iii. I'm stuck between these two cameras and trying to decide which would be ideal for quick use and running around mostly handheld. The major thing having me consider the 1dxiii over the C200 is the 10 bit internal codec vs the 8 bit in the C200 and how much of a difference it makes because I won't be shooting RAW for most things.
Hey Luke, thanks for checking the video out. I would say they would both be great for your use. If you want a little better low light, and a great compressed 10 bit codec the 1dx iii would be a great option. It’s also an amazing photo camera so if that is part of what you need it will suit you well. If you do a lot of doc work going indoors, to outdoors, back indoors again, then you will appreciate the built in nd’s in the c200. Also the c200 xlr’s are great if you will be recording a lot of interviews etc. They will both make great options for you though!
@@GriffinConway thank you for the response Griffin! It sounds like the c200 is likely the fit for me. I'll be doing a lot of interviews and having the built in ND's will be awesome.
Thanks for the review, I've been waiting for something like that! You have answered a lot of my question, but I am missing one: how did you grade the 1DX III raw files? With Canon DPP?
Martin Fülöp glad you liked the review! I graded the 1dx Mark iii clips in resolve. The newest version supports the 1dx iii raw files. I applied the Alexa lut and added a very small amount of contrast after that and used the exact same grading process on the c200 clips.
It's really great the quality in h.265 of the markiii!!! The RAW is simply too much size for most jobs of any camera. Great video, very good examples in shadows and backlight for see the real differences. Thanks!
Thanks for the comparison😀 I am very happy with my C200 and record in RAW as often as I can. The 5.5K RAW of the 1DX Mark III would really be to much data for me. Hopefully and update can also give you a cropped 4K RAW or CLOG2 or at least Clog3 in h265 and also a Waveform Monitor. Then it would be the perfect B cam😁
In the case of the Canon EOS C200, this breakthrough enables 4K internal recording to a high-speed CFast™ 2.0 card, working out at around 15 minutes of 12-bit or 10-bit DCI 4K at 1Gbps on a 128GB card. (It's worth noting that only CFast™ 2.0 cards that support VPG-130 are recommended for use with Cinema RAW Light.)
It's funny to me when people say that because I find clog2 the easiest to grade, but that's mainly because I have some go-to lut's I made and they are pretty much drag and drop and it will look good. I didn't test any clog3 footage because I don't usually use it. Also, the 1dx mark iii has clog1 internal and you can interpret the raw footage as clog2 in davinci.
very nice presenation! can you suggest what you were using as lighting triggers? So, now i'm looking for a new radio system that can work with my speedlights and my strobes for ettl triggering / exposure.
Hey Mike I will try and check this out for you next time I get my strobes out. I have a feeling it will work because godox is pretty good about having their products work across multiple cameras
hey man thank you very much for these videos, was thinking on getting one of the two so this is really helpful. I think ima stick with the c200, cannot wait to try 12bit as I'm coming from an a7III lmao
Thanks for the video! I'm torn right now on 1Diii, C200, or wait for the R6/R5 option. I do content creation for several companies, plus a TH-cam channel. Currently running a 5DmkIV for detail shots and stuff that really matters, and a Sony NX80 when I need just quick and/or easy for the TH-cam channel. Headed to browse more of your channel to help me decide, haha.
Those are all great choices Brian! Hopefully my videos can help you make that decision. I will be making some videos on the r5 very soon so keep an eye out for that!
Griffin Conway thanks for the response! I’ve actually decided to just bite the bullet and step my business up a notch. Now I’m waiting on the C300 mkiii to get in stock 😁 It’s a big decision, but in the end my clients will get better work and I’ll have more versatility. Keep up the great work!
Nice Brian! That’s so awesome! Stoked for you. That’s an incredible camera. I’m sure you will love it. Let me know what you think of it when you get it and start shouting with it. I’m planning to test it soon but haven’t had the chance yet.
Great Review! I want to buy a camera to take pictures of my girls playing volleyball and also record their games. Is this the right camera? Or should I look at the Fujifilm gfx 100 medium?
I think the 1dx iii is one of the very best sports cameras you can get right now. Fast burst shutter, great auto focus, great low light so if you are shooting in a gymnasium with less than optimal light. I took photos of my little sister at her volleyball game and was very happy with the results. If you are looking for another great option, the R5 is really solid as well. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@GriffinConway awesome, please do because TH-cam's compression is so bad. You could link to the video on Vimeo for videos where the compression from YT is an issue. Keep doing fantastic work.
Gotcha....maybe in the future I will do that. For now it’s a lot of work to manage full time work in production and also doing TH-cam for fun, but if my time opens up more I will probably do it
The 1dx mark ii and mark iii both have the histogram which is great, but once you hit record it goes away so it is less useful than the waveform on the c200, which will stay on the monitor the whole time.
Visceral Vow thank you. The record times are correct. I have the camera right here next to me. In raw, it records 12 bit in 24p and 10 bit in 60p, that’s why the file size is the same in 60p. And in XF-AVC mode, it is the same record time regardless of whether you are in 24p or 60p.
Griffin Conway that makes sense, I forgot about the fact that the bit depth changes from 24p to 60p. We just bought a c200 and then the virus came along and all of out events have canceled or postponed of course so there are a few things to learn still. From the few test we’ve run we really love the c200 over the c100 mkii’s we were previously using. We were holding out on buying a c200b because we wanted to consider the 1dx mkiii. I think we will go ahead and push the button on the c200b. We will continue to use the EOS r as a c-cam until the R6 or R5 are released. We’ve tried the Blackmagic and the FUJIFILM cameras but in our opinion nothing can hold up to Canon for live event work. Keep those videos rolling and you are doing great work! Thanks!!
Griffin... quick question... canon log files... what software are you using to edit it? I use Divinci , but it imports the files, but doesn't read the video... just the audio. DPP of course reads it, but can't convert it to mov files?
Griffin Conway - yep...you hit the nail on the head... you need to use DiVinci Resolve Studio to be able to view H.265 files. Ordered it. Also confirmed that with Lightroom, one needs a paid subscription to import the new Raw files.... so, I'll stick with the Raw Converter and Lightroom 16 for that solution. Thansk for all the tips!
Depends on your budget...the best b cam is another c200! Lol but the 1dx Mark iii makes a great b cam. Dropping down in price from there I would say the EOS R is probably your best bet. The Blackmagic pocket 4K or 6k is also a good option. The footage is a little better but I handles colors a little differently than the eos r and doesn’t have autofocus.
Monkeypixels thanks bro! Appreciate you checking the video out! 1dx iii has c log in all modes, I was saying clog 2 is available in the raw mode only though. But how about that new r5 though 👀
I'm looking to upgrade my a7sii and switch to canon (I'm set on switching entirely) and am wondering what you'd recommend. I do mostly wedding work (videography) and occasionally do some corporate work. I also do some sports photography as well and some wedding photography as well so I was considering getting 2 idx iii's to replace my sony a7sii and a9 and it's the best of both worlds. R5/6 looks great but I'd need to see what the overheating situation looks like as I do work in the sun a lot and have had my a7sii's overheat a couple of times and it wasn't nice. I'm worried about a non-articulating screen and the visibility of the 1dx iii in the sun. Any recommendations?
Griffin Conway - fantastic! That’s crucial information for me that I couldn’t get from many posts of the same question... even tried sending emails to Canon, too, believe it or not. Thanks!!
You mentioned that the waveform was inaccurate on the Ninja V ... did you have view assist or a LUT applied to the view? And can you shoot in RAW with a profile that might better match the low contrast higher DR of the file when rendered as CLOG 2 in Resolve? Went to a Sony A9ii from BMP6K for the AF and speed but really missing RAW and better codec in 10/12 bit. Really shows when I am not lighting a set and working outside. Atomos has a HDMI 2.0 cable now ... $89 from BH ... looks like the old one but says 2K on it ... should be better for higher frame rates. Still trying to decide on a camera with SDI connection ... just lost a HDMI cable last week ... really fragile. I use this connector cable anchor from RRS: www.reallyrightstuff.com/ca-1 But not how they show it ... just use a Red Whip from Think Tank to secure the cable to the anchor so you dont compress the cable ... and position the anchor vertically to stabilize the cable vertically .... it all assumes that you have a RRS L-plate on your camera ... but it is bullet-proof ... I cable and anchor prior to mounting the camera on the video head. Great reviews of the C500/200/1DXiii ... I wonder if the C300iii will supplant the C200 for a lot.
Thanks Robert glad you enjoyed the video. The waveform on the ninja doesn’t work well for me because even when monitoring the log signal, it is still showing video levels instead of the full levels of the camera, and it is in clog2 and I interpret the footage as clog 2 in post, so it becomes sort of an exposure guessing game unfortunately
@@GriffinConway I just picked up the camera ... in no small part due to your videos. Immediately noticed that nothing in camera gets me close to a correct exposure ... will start putting the Sekonic to use ... and I have not been able to use the Canon Raw Plugin 1.4 for FCPX ... it does not recognize the .crm files. I purchased FCPX as DR Studio is hanging when it attempts to render the files ... Someone on DVXUser suggested CRD 2.5 which works great ... transcode to PR 4444 and Resolve has no problem rendering. Convoluted but does afford the greater color depth. I was a bit surprised to discover that certain lenses do not allow for cinematic focus pulls in AF ... the 50 1.2 L in particular.
Glad to hear my videos helped you in your decision making for the camera. I have tried editing the raw footage in final cut and davinci resolve without issue, and as of a few days ago Premiere Pro even allows for native editing. They are huge files though, so I would suggest using a proxy workflow. I'm not a final cut editor but I'm sure you can youtube how to create proxies and have someone explain it much better than I could! lol...Regarding exposure, the best tool I have found is set your exposure at the beginning of recording the clip using the histogram. This is the most accurate tool IMO
Thanks. Odd it doesn’t work FF 60p, but nice to know the 120 is good and AF works there. I think it’s a real interesting camera, like you said maybe not A or B (for me personally) but a nice specialty camera. Wish it had raw light, but I guess the regular codec is pretty good.
I’ve watched this 6-9 times already trying to decide what’s best for my style of shooting. Which is about 95% video work but on my personal time I shoot 95% photo 🤣
Haha that’s awesome! Glad you like it and it’s helpful. Maybe consider a c200b and pick up a EOS RP with the extra money you save by getting the b version?
I think the r5 is a very interesting camera, and there is a good chance I will get one...that said, it is aimed at an entirely different group of people. Pro sports photographers will likely appreciate getting 20fps photos with mechanical shutter (not just electronic like the r5) because of the banding that is caused from fluorescent light. Also, the weather sealing is second to none. But for the average photo/video hybrid shooter the r5 is most likely the best bet.
I thought you guys couldn't say "Corona Virus" - don't they demonetize you if you actually say it in your video? Shout out to another Orange County video person. Cheers and stay safe.

Hey Mike I will try and check this out for you next time I get my strobes out. I have a feeling it will work because godox is pretty good about having their products work across multiple cameras
Griffin Conway - thanks, partner. I appreciate your work.
hey man thank you very much for these videos, was thinking on getting one of the two so this is really helpful. I think ima stick with the c200, cannot wait to try 12bit as I'm coming from an a7III lmao
Flame TV thanks for checking the video out! I’m sure you will love the dynamic range and bit depth of the c200!
If someone was thinking of getting a 1DxIII for video, get a C300 which can actually be used for NetFlix production.
very nice man, keep doing
Thank you Toddy!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻..very good info bro.
Thank you
Thanks for the video!
Where can we get your c200 luts?
Great Review!
I want to buy a camera to take pictures of my girls playing volleyball and also record their games. Is this the right camera?
Or should I look at the Fujifilm gfx 100 medium?
I think the 1dx iii is one of the very best sports cameras you can get right now. Fast burst shutter, great auto focus, great low light so if you are shooting in a gymnasium with less than optimal light. I took photos of my little sister at her volleyball game and was very happy with the results. If you are looking for another great option, the R5 is really solid as well. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@GriffinConway,
Thank you very much!!!
Griffin, great channel. Appreciate the reviews. Do you have a Vimeo? Thanks - Devin
Thanks Devin! I don’t have a Vimeo right now. I’ll let you know if I create an account on there
@@GriffinConway awesome, please do because TH-cam's compression is so bad. You could link to the video on Vimeo for videos where the compression from YT is an issue. Keep doing fantastic work.
Gotcha....maybe in the future I will do that. For now it’s a lot of work to manage full time work in production and also doing TH-cam for fun, but if my time opens up more I will probably do it
One Question about what you said about the missing waveform on the 1D - I use the histogram which works great. I guess the Mark III has that also, no?
The 1dx mark ii and mark iii both have the histogram which is great, but once you hit record it goes away so it is less useful than the waveform on the c200, which will stay on the monitor the whole time.
Sick! nice comparison.
Thanks so much TroyStories! I really appreciate you checking out the video.
Good stuff bro 👍🏾
Thanks a lot Teddy!
Great content man, keep it up! We feel exactly the same about the two cameras haha. Stay safe man!
Thanks so much Tyler! You too brotha!
Great video but double check the recording times for the c200. You shouldn’t get the same exact record times in 24p vs 60p.
Thanks!!
Visceral Vow thank you 🙏 good luck with everything and stay safe!
Amazing
Thank you!
Griffin... quick question... canon log files... what software are you using to edit it? I use Divinci , but it imports the files, but doesn't read the video... just the audio. DPP of course reads it, but can't convert it to mov files?
Latest version of Davinci should work, but I think you need the paid version. And premiere works great for me as long as I build proxies.
Griffin Conway - thanks agin, my friend. I'll let you know how it goes after this week-end.
Griffin Conway - just a quick update.. Divinci studio works fine w canon log (and canon Raw)! I feel complete :) thanks again.
What do you feel like is a great B Cam for the C200?
Depends on your budget...the best b cam is another c200! Lol but the 1dx Mark iii makes a great b cam. Dropping down in price from there I would say the EOS R is probably your best bet. The Blackmagic pocket 4K or 6k is also a good option. The footage is a little better but I handles colors a little differently than the eos r and doesn’t have autofocus.
Great review! Really liked it. Hope you keep doing youtube! I just subscribed! Just hope the thing you said about Clog isn't true :D. Subscribed!
Monkeypixels thanks bro! Appreciate you checking the video out! 1dx iii has c log in all modes, I was saying clog 2 is available in the raw mode only though. But how about that new r5 though 👀
Great info thanks. 1DX seems like a great B or C Camera
Definitely! That’s how I use it all the time
I'm looking to upgrade my a7sii and switch to canon (I'm set on switching entirely) and am wondering what you'd recommend.
With the A7Siii there's no reason to switch anymore I think.
None of the Canon mirrorless lineup can match Sony right now.
Would you post a comment in relation to a CN-E prime use with the 1DX3 - do the manual "focus guides" work?
Yes they do! That’s the main benefit in my opinion to using canon CN-E cinema glass vs other manufacturers
Griffin Conway - fantastic! That’s crucial information for me that I couldn’t get from many posts of the same question... even tried sending emails to Canon, too, believe it or not.
Thanks!!
Wow! Glad I could help!
How many cameras do you own? Can I have like...two more?
Jeffrey Hong trade you a couple of them for a Blackmagic 🎥
Great Review 🙌🏼
Thank you
great video bro
Thanks so much Faizr!
Griffin Conway most welcome bro
I am so torn between the 1dxiii and the R5...
You mentioned that the waveform was inaccurate on the Ninja V ... did you have view assist or a LUT applied to the view? And can you
shoot in RAW with a profile that might better match the low contrast higher DR of the file when rendered as CLOG 2 in Resolve?
Went to a Sony A9ii from BMP6K for the AF and speed but really missing RAW and better codec in 10/12 bit. Really shows when I am not
lighting a set and working outside.
Atomos has a HDMI 2.0 cable now ... $89 from BH ... looks like the old one but says 2K on it ... should be better for higher frame rates.
Still trying to decide on a camera with SDI connection ... just lost a HDMI cable last week ... really fragile.
I use this connector cable anchor from RRS:
www.reallyrightstuff.com/ca-1
But not how they show it ... just use a Red Whip from Think Tank to secure the cable to the anchor so you dont compress the cable ... and position the
anchor vertically to stabilize the cable vertically .... it all assumes that you have a RRS L-plate on your camera ... but it is bullet-proof ... I cable and anchor
prior to mounting the camera on the video head.
Immediately noticed that nothing in camera gets me close to
a correct exposure ... will start putting the Sekonic to use ... and I have not been able to use the Canon Raw Plugin 1.4 for FCPX ... it does not recognize the
.crm files.
Super helpful! Thanks
Thank you!
GF - do you get an accurate representation on the waveform?
Sorry I’m not sure what you are referring to exactly
Does the AF work in 120fps?
Yes it does! Works in all settings except 4K 60p full frame and 5.5k 60p full frame
Thanks. Odd it doesn’t work FF 60p, but nice to know the 120 is good and AF works there. I think it’s a real interesting camera, like you said maybe not A or B (for me personally) but a nice specialty camera. Wish it had raw light, but I guess the regular codec is pretty good.
The raw in the 1dx iii technically isn’t raw light but it is almost the same. It even interprets as raw light in premiere now
how much price of 1Dx mkiii.
6500 usd
Thans bro.
Happy to help!
Really glad you made this video... these are the two I’m debating for my buss. I just DMd your IG 🤙
Cool I’ll take a look. Glad you enjoyed the video!
i am wedding cinematographer..😜.which camera is best for me.🤨
I cover that exact thing towards the end of the video 👍
I’ve watched this 6-9 times already trying to decide what’s best for my style of shooting. Which is about 95% video work but on my personal time I shoot 95% photo 🤣
Haha that’s awesome! Glad you like it and it’s helpful. Maybe consider a c200b and pick up a EOS RP with the extra money you save by getting the b version?
That is almost exactly what I was thinking. Except for I’ll do an EOS r because I own like 10 lpe6 batteries already 👍
Harry De La Cruz that’s a great option!
C Cam and BTS collector.
Definitely! Silent shutter on the 1dx iii makes it great for bts while cam’s are rolling too
And then R5 drops and lots of 1dxmk3 will be on ebay :)
This comment didn’t age well heheheh
You should call Canon and tell them to add waveforms, false colors, and 4K RAW to the 1Dx... I am sure they will do it 😂 (I wish)
I wish I knew someone at Canon! Haha
I thought you guys couldn't say "Corona Virus" - don't they demonetize you if you actually say it in your video? Shout out to another Orange County video person. Cheers and stay safe.
I would have to be monetized first for it to matter! haha...I don't make any money from TH-cam I just do it for fun. Stay safe out there!
I don't know why I'm watching this as I'll never be able to afford either of these.
Maybe someday! I started with a cheap used camera I bought off craigslist. Once you start getting more jobs with photo and video it might become a reality!
@@GriffinConway let's hope right
BMPCC 4K still better
