I'm a VP for a large corporate manufacturer. How I wish I could walk out, drive down to this store in NC, and get a job there as a stock boy. Come in at 6am each day, leave at 6pm. Live in an apt. above one of the downtown buildings. Carefree. That is what the best life is all about.
Love story's like this! My grandparents bought a long ago abandoned county store in Freedom NH and I was blessed to get the summers helping them out running it and have many story's about dealing with the local's and the summer people coming into the store. My grandad also drove the local school bus, was on the volunteer fire department, my grandmother was the local town clerk. When my grand father passed away they closed the local school and used the busses to transport people to the church. There was too many people so they had to have two services.

Had a general store in a small hamlet in upstate New York,when I moved there in the 70's,you could buy anything from a rifle to ammo,fishing gear to snacks,milk,bread gasoline ,if you were a local you could put it on your'tab' and pay at the end of the week , was a meeting place on saturday morning for locals to catch up on small talk and gossip ,the store was a lifeline for many,I didn't mind some of the higher prices,it was the convenience of having the store there when you needed it.An asset to the Community.
We had 2 old hardware stores in the town I grew up in Ohio. They had all kinds of stuff. Fishing gear, guns, ammo, and hard ware, paint, nails ect. I could go in there as a teenager and buy shotgun shells.
I remember the bench around the red coke machine (filled with Fanta my fav "red pop") that you threw a dime & nickel in a plate for that, attached to the machine. The idea being the clerk could process the non-tongue waggers while the story tellers help themselves. Nobody cheated ever, your reputation was everything. I remember my entire class of girls in HS would make you wait an entirety for the heavy kissing. ALL of them. 1980
My dad grew up during the depression and work was hard to find in west texas. He did find a job as a grocery clerk tho. Some of his jobs were painting specials on the windows(everything had to be done in reverse), deliveries, keeping the store swept out and clean and waiting on the customers. This was before the self-service grocery, so every item had to be pulled from the shelf and price noted on side of paper grocery bag. Do you know that the owner had been in business so long that he could just add a column of figures just by glancing at them?the old man finally went out of business he was too kind-hearted and extended too much credit. People were literally starving and he couldn’t stand to see it, especially the kids. He ended up in hard times. My dad sent him money later on. That’s how much he appreciated the job.
We had a store at the nearby crossroads intersection like that. It was built of wood with the old wooden porch with chairs out front. Inside they had just about anything you might need from food and drinks to hardware and gas and livestock feed. They even had a deli section with assorted cheeses and meats. They had a grill in the back with a small dining area with one table and 4 chairs. You could get a burger or a cold cut sandwich and a bag of chips or some French fries. They even had a fishing section off to the side that had a variety of fishing needs, including hunting and fishing licenses and live bait like minnows and worms. Mary and Hubert owned the store and while they had it they would extend credit to the local farmers, because they knew how hit and miss farming was. But, they sold the place when they retired and it was torn down with a new store built in it's place. Burglar bars were installed along with steel sliding front door and a security system. Credit was no longer offered and the new owners would only hire young teenagers to work there and service was terrible. They jacked up the prices of everything and started to lose business. Within a couple of years they closed up and it sat there empty for a few years. Recently a family of Orientals bought it and are trying to make a go of it. All I can do is wish them luck, because it's cheaper for me to drive 15 miles into town to get what I need. I sure do miss the old store with Mary and Hubert.
My maternal grandfather's home town was Plainfield, Wisc. Ed Gein's notoriety put Plainfield on the map. Across the street from the location of Gein's final heinous crime was a Ben Franklin store....if only the walls in that place could talk!
I lived in Middlebrook VA in the early '80's and we had a store like this. It wasn't as retro/nostalgia as this store, but it was very much an artifact of earlier times. A local woman baked "Scooter Pies" that were akin to "Moon Pies", and they were out of this world good. A Scooter Pie with a 6 & 1/2-ounce Coke and life was good for 13 year old me!
Oh I do miss those days i truly do.. I’m not so sure about this progress stuff.. guarantee if I lived close to there I’d spend a lot of time in that store just cause

I am 52 and remember stores like ths in Western Massachusetts. A few are still around but very hard to find these days.
im 57 and the town where i live had two of these treasures, both were knocked down cause the land was worth more then it was with the buildings on it.

Ashe County Cheese is located in West Jefferson, NC. There is an outlet store there. This is also a lovely small NC town to visit.
The world needs more of this simpler times and people live this man. Can't replace the old simple with new modern. Just not the same. Great video!

I used to catch the school bus at a store like this in the 1970’s in Caldwell County Kentucky. I loved the pop cooler.
