I had the pleasure of meeting Lucia rijker in real life and I can tell you while she's the best boxer ever existed outside the ring she's actually a sweetheart and the nicest person ever
@@dinorex3464 like Tony Todd (Candyman) said in an interview "just because we play as villains doesn't mean we are demented and evil in real life as we are people too"
I remember when I first heard of this movie, "girl fighters?! you gotta be kidding", then I watched it. Movie grabbed me by the heart and wouldn't let go, how it all turned out at the end, and the translation of the Mo Cuishle when I looked it up, ripped the broken heart right out of my chest. All amazing performances in this movie. Time also caught up with the notion of female fighters for me, there are some incredibly brave and skilled fighters out there, I'd like to think this movie helped me learn to respect that.
This film is flawless. All the praises by leading actors are well deserved but I'd like to point out that Rijker did a fantastic job as Bille. One of the most memorable acting performances by a non professional actor I have ever seen. I think I'm gonna take a DVD out of my shelf and watch it (yet again :D) today in the evening.
There should be a sequel to this movie focusing on Billie The Blue Bear as a drunken washed up boxer living with the mistake of what she done to Maggie prior to her passing
What I thought would have been a powerful scene: When Frankie visits the priest, he looks in the church and sees Billie praying for forgiveness. I don’t think she wanted THAT to happen.
PENALTIES AGAINST BLUE BEAR - Warning for failure to break and malicious intent to do violent behavior during the bout. Next, another infraction - 2 intentional elbow strikes on Maggie gave Blue Bear a deduction of a point. Another point deduction for a revenge elbow strike and the ref then warns Blue Bear at the end of Round 1: "YOU DO THAT CRAP ONE MORE TIME AND YOU'RE DISQUALIFIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
But then again she could have suckered punch her as Maggie was walking backwards and still could have felt on that stool. But at least keeping your eyes locked on your enemy would have gained a 50% survival rate instead of 10% survival if you had your back turned to your enemy.
I hated the ending. I hated this movie. I felt depressed and cried a lot because of this movie. Now, I am more mature, somehow I can understand Maggie and Frank's choice. It was beautiful movie. It broke my heart but stayed in my memory for so long because it was beautiful and great movie.
Why do people keep saying she lost. In the movie as well. After knocking the blue bear down, the referee jumped between and waved it off... it's over right there. and the NEW!!!
This was the Most Pathetic Fight in a Movie that I have ever seen! There were a dozen different things that the Blue Bear did that would have gotten her disqualified way before Maggie even got hurt!
+Anthony Tanza Yes, Billie gets away with super dirty fighting. Even this elbow hit alone which we see in the clip above possibly would get her disqualified. However it works perfectly fine for the story.
Agree but money is money my friend. The life of a single person doesn't matter in a World Final whatever. The most important thing is that spectators enjoy the show and this reports huge benefits
I don’t like how some of the things seen in the movie that blue bear did would never happen in real life. They coulda let Maggie win. I hated how Maggie ended up dying.
What happened with blue bear? She won and had a very succesful life until her last years of life without any punishment? I love how this film show to us how fair is life and how Religions took advantatge of this saying:Don't worry, pain is good to get the key to the Heaven. Very good film, was very shocking for me :'(
One illegal blow after another that permanently injures Maggie and stops the fight. I promise you Blue Bear does not get a happy ending here. Let me tell you what happens. Due to the permanent extent of Maggie's injuries, this officially DQ Blue Bear and Maggie wins by default. But that's not all. The national boxing committee has reviewed the fight and tore up Blue Bear's boxing license. She will never fight professionally ever again. Blue Bear will be fined for her illegal assault and most likely sit a spell in jail. Blue Bear will go down as a villain and a disgrace to the sport like Tanya Harding & Mike Tyson combined in the eyes of the media. Fans and mass media will never let it down in the years to come as Blue Bear will be bombarded by hate fan mail and death threats by fans, and that taint will stay with her for the rest of her life.
The character and the actor "Hilary Swank" are one of the same. Hilary originally grew up in a mobile home having big dreams, to become an actor. Hilary Swank relates well to the Character she's playing.
I only watched the whole movie once it’s way too depressing. I like to think that the boxing commission threw the book at Billie and she was stripped of her pay for this fight, belt and boxing license and will one day feel remorse for what she did to Maggie.
Why isn't there a movie on arparment house wrestling on the first champion of apartment house wrestling cynara including the where she looses the championship to a cheerleader and Hillary swank would be the perfect part for the cheerleader and one of the old cast of one of the three stooges stock company would be perfect for.the part of the apartment house champion ciinara now please after all this just a sugestion
it was a great movie. But can we call that boxing? It was more like WWE. director wanted it to be dramatic. But its far far away from real world of boxing

Fun fact: Lucia rijker (blue bear) is actually one of the most succesfull female boxers/kickboxers of all time
0:06 : here you can hear the subtle direction from Eastwood : the little creepy noise to make you understand that this character is death herself....
Them braids made that scene. her bone structure is amazing....
Like an orc.

I like the punchy sound effects.
This is the best drama in history of cinema! This is a unique masterpiece!

That kind of bears R heatless
Maggie is the better fighter
Blue Bear just wants to win everytime
What I thought would have been a powerful scene: When Frankie visits the priest, he looks in the church and sees Billie praying for forgiveness. I don’t think she wanted THAT to happen.
Lucia rijker doesn't have a lot of acting experience tho. She actually is one of the most succesfull women boxers/ kickboxer ahah.
Wouldn't she be in prison?
grande attrice e bellissima !!!!!

Billie looks so strong and scary.

I have a feeling that, if the blue bear didn't do that suckered punch that caused Maggie to fall and break her neck, Maggie would've definitely won.
Spoiler alert lol

I like the parody version of this scene, in Scary Movie 4 i think
What the hell? Why didnt we see the whole fight?

Agreed. I think they could've made Maggie win. And also they should make a male version because I think it would be cool

Now, is this movie a true story or not? I searched google and there are references to Maggie's boxing history and death. Someone tell me please.
+Mattie Peters No, Maggie Fitzgerald is a ficticious character. The film is based on several stories of a story collection called "Ropes burn".
The character and the actor "Hilary Swank" are one of the same. Hilary originally grew up in a mobile home having big dreams, to become an actor. Hilary Swank relates well to the Character she's playing.
+Mattie Peters The Blue Bear (Lucia Rijker) is a true boxing and kickboxing champion and she trained Hillary Swank for the movie
Marysvale's Heart Energy I am referring to Maggie Fitzgerald's true to life story. Then I learned she's a fictional character.
Mattie Peters Oh
