I would have loved to go to Les Amis Cafe just once. I understand it closed, too bad. I have the 20th anniversary DVD of Slacker and it has video of the Halloween party at Les Amis in 1988, looked like loads of fun.

I love how he is talking about moon landings conspiracy theories while wearing a Batman shirt with bat signal on the moon.

Lol irony is half of the joke. Naming a random date, which happens to be the kid’s birthday, then not acknowledging it… Genius

So glad this movie was made and documented this moment in time - in it's own special way.

This fellow's so perfect for a film like this. He personifies this film the most in my opinion, (my favorite character being that long hair towards the end on the give away guns rant) though my basic hunch is that he's not really acting much at all just being himself so it's just pure & natural. I bet he hardly had a script to memorize...just head on out there & rattle off this poor kids ear round the old block. Still, as experimental as this footage is I believe it must have taken a tremendous amount of timing. A truly cultivated process, quintessential.

I believe that character is based on Alex Jones who was not famous and would hang out in Austin back then. I was cornered by him at a college party once (this was in 1988 or 1989) and he was talking to me about secret bases on the moon.

I remember Alex Jones on access TV in the early/mid 90's. But I think this character is nothing like him.
This article says that Linklater and Jones are 'friends' and Linklater cast Jones in two other films.... so why would he use this guy here.... reasoningconspiracy.wordpress.com/2013/11/22/jfk-alex-jones-richard-linklater/

Actually . . . I found more info: "Jerry Delony (played a talkative conspiracy theorist): They handed out a little sticker to people they thought looked interesting. It said, If you want to be in an interesting movie, show up at this audition. Rick asked me, “Could you just improvise a bit?” I said, “About what?” And he said, “Um, UFOs?” It had been a passion of mine, and I’d had remarkable experiences, and I started rattling it off." www.salon.com/2006/07/05/slacker/

UFOclub Creative LLC So there is a guy that lives in my apartment complex that kind of cornered my girlfriend after she got to talking with him for a little bit, he went on about aliens and negative ions and walking around barefoot and had a camera with him and talked that big Brother is watching at all times like just spot on.
Not saying what he was saying is untrue though...

Linklater said in the commentary this character was based off similar types of people who wandered around West Campus. He noted the proximity of the Capitol, campus and state mental hospital and how sometimes you couldn't tell where these people came from.
