    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Coach Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) redefines perfection; he urges his team to "put each other in your hearts" before they take the field.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
H.G. Bissinger's best-selling true-life account of a few months in the life of a high-school football team comes to the screen in this adaptation written and directed by Peter Berg. Odessa, TX, is an oil town in the western part of the state that's home to the Permian High School Panthers, the football team with the best winning record in the state. Odessa is a town with more than its share of problems; the decline of the oil business in Texas has set the city's economy into a tailspin, and racial tensions still erupt into violence on occasion. But football is the one thing that brings all the people of Odessa together, and on Friday nights every fall, as many as 20,000 people fill Permian's football stadium to watch Coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) and his boys try to lead the team to victory. As Gaines works to build a winning team in a town where victory is prized above all else, however, his players struggle through the emotional trials common to any teenager and ponder the fact that there is little future in their hometown...and that a championship season can be as much a burden as a triumph. Friday Night Lights also stars Lucas Black, Derek Luke, Jay Hernandez, and country singer-turned-actor Tim McGraw.

"You got two more quarters...and after that most of you will never play this game again as long as you live." Those are words most high school football players have heard. When the reality sets in, it's an incredibly hard fact to face.

I myself played football from frosh-junior year. Didn't get to play my sr year due to unfortunate family circumstances so I didn't even get to hear that speech.
But then later, when I was active duty in the Marines after high school, I did get to suit up one last time in the Marine Corp intramural football leagues, and I was so damn greatful for that. I was able to get that last hit out of my system and I've been at peace with it since.

lmfao "criminally underrated". Another one of those guys who heard "criminally underrated" once, thought it sounded good, and applies it to every goddamn thing he loves and thinks is underappreciated. How exactly is this film underrated? Most people who were born in the 90s and onward consider this the best high school sports movie ever, next to maybe Remember the Titans. It spawned a television show, it's considered a Billy Bob Thornton classic, most people in sports who's seen this film (and the biggest demographic for a film like this would be jocks) will tell you this scene and this speech is one of the greatest they've ever seen. This is not a "criminally underrated" film lol

" he's a little short " - said to someone who was about 6'0 maybe 6'1 i seen colleges not give a scholarship to the unanimous league MVP who kept a 3.0 GPA because he got a D in a class freshman year. I seen players get hurt and never play again. And of the players i know who played in college they'll tell you how much harder it is to even make the NFL. Just being invited to the combine is a huge honor.

Clip was uploaded 5 years ago and the movie came out in 2004. Since then, I've come to see this movie in a totally different light and now have a new perspective. This is not suppose an attack or meant to incite an argument, but it's just what I took away from the movie. One could even see it a subtle message the movie was trying to make.
You see, FNL is NOT about football.
It's about what happens when people (in this case, young aspiring athletes who think the highest peak of their life is winning a football championship) put all their chips on one plate, and in some cases (especially for Boobie Miles), they face a devastating loss. The insurmountable pressure put upon the team and their coaches from the town, school, the sport boosters, and their own family and friends makes them think they NEED to, in a sense, be "perfect." The people of this movie make football rule EVERYTHING about their lives. Look, I know, that is just what football is to a lot of people. Trust me, I know, I grew up in Texas myself. But I think if you analyze the main character( Mike Winchell), the movie portrays him sometimes as an unwilling participant. He's doing football mainly because of his mother and feels like its the only way out....but I would seriously doubt that he earnestly and completely LOVES it (football). There is even a scene in the movie where he talks to the coach about feeling "cursed."
The speech assures them that winning the game is not what will make them a "perfect" person, but rather it's how they treat each other and other people AND how they live their lives after this moment. When he says that "forever is about to happen", he's not just talking about the game, he's talking THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. It's a turning point for a lot of them, because they realize that essentially life as they know it isn't "over" after this game, regardless if they win or lose. Highschool football does not necessarily have to be the peak of their lives. It can a memorable moment sure, but not by any stretch the absolute BEST or most IMPORTANT part of their lives.

    • @stephengrigg5988
      @stephengrigg5988 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

yea that's basically the point of the movie. it's all bigger than football. some of the aged characters who had dead end lives and still bring up the high school championship missed out on life, and that's what the coach was stressing. I can't remember the characters name, but Tim McGraws' character ,imo, was the most interesting. he is so ridiculously hard on his son to the point of being borderline abusive, and his character does a 180° with his short speech. "you've got one year to make memories.." he was someone that peaked in high school and didn't want the same for his son, but maybe thought that was inevitable. he even showed signs of regret for his past, like how he just throws his ring out of the window. he was a tragic character who wasn't the best at raising a kid, yet he clearly loved his son and wanted him to go farther in life than him. fnl is a damn realistic film with its layered and nuanced characters

A lot of non-football players feel this movie was too over-dramatic and fantastical, but kids who grew up with football know how ridiculously true-to-life the movie is. This was always my favorite scene, because Coach Gaines' speech basically sums up the entire message of the movie. Winning is not the only mission, trying your best to win is.

"Because forever's about to happen here in just a few minutes." Its been 32 years since I heard a speech such as this, I did play semipro a lil while and nothing compares to the brotherhood of high school football. Its like a bond that you would take a bullet for your teammate. This was a emotional scene because so many have felt this. I am 51 now and nothing in life has fulfilled me unfortunately as sad as that sounds as the game. I guess because its such a big deal in those times, the letdown is hard to be "normal" again. To all that have gone thru this. Totally get you.

Man this movie brings back memories of my last ever halftime which was the most emotional one ever, down 28-0 to Boerne-champion in the 2nd round of the playoffs, our captains rallied us and but the speech that was the most emotional was our own quarterback, which had all of us in tears. We still lost 35-16, but I do remember after the last handshake I took off my helmet and realized it's over and cried like I never have. High school football absolutely made me into a man I'm glad I played all 4 years 🏈 I'd do anything to suit up one more time 😔

This speech is so, so good. It’s impressive how directly a Hollywood production was able to hit it on the head. You don’t realize it till it’s over, but this is gold.
“Being perfect, is about being able to look your friends in the eye, and know, that you didn’t let them down, because you told them the truth. And that truth is that you did everything that you could - there wasn’t one more thing that you could’ve done. Can you live in that moment?”
It gives me peace to know that at the end of my collegiate career, I can look back and honestly say that there wasn’t one more thing I could’ve done. I left it all out there, and I love this speech for giving me and everyone else who feels the same way something to hang their hat on.

I saw/heard a real variant of this speech. I was a practice assistant/equipment man for a very good HS team, and our team was getting their asses handed to them in the state championship game. Our d coordinator-who was more fiery than the HC-told the team “You have two more quarters in your football playing careers to go out and play the way you know you CAN. This is your last chance to do what you do best as a team”-and the team came out with their hair on fire and almost pulled off the comeback against a very good opponent. The script writers and Billy Bob Thornton both hit a home run, to mix sports metaphors lol….

I was born in 88' in Odessa,Tx . I still live here and my parents, brother and I have seen what this town ( now small city) has gone through and overcome. It was really fucking racist back then. My mom is mexican and my dad ( who isn't my dad, but he's raised me my whole life so he's my dad.) were criticized and ostracized from his family cause he married a mexican women and not some white girl from the east side . Now it's not as bad and the economy made it to were jobs are everywhere. But, those years when there was nothing, but football were crazy. I remember being 5 and going to a game at Ratliff cause my mom would tape the games to be played later. The intensity of it all, the lights , the crowds were just ... I can't describe it. It's a feeling you have to experience. I don't like football as much as my dad or brother, but I respect the game and the players. They were once stars in this town . The movie is really inaccurate, but drama sells. I wish they would have shown the rivalry between OHS and Permian. Jesus it was fucking bad. It was basically East side vs. West side , Poor side vs. Rich side. It's still that way. I live on the West side of Odessa and we don't have near as much shit as the East Side. It's always been that way. Times may change some things, but some things never change.
Now Permian doesn't win much and people don't go to games much anymore. It's a shame , but that's how it is.. I'll never forget that feeling and experience of being at one of those games and witnessing what they did. It's something you have to experience to understand.
