Seriously. They look like an entirely different team since the day he took over. They were almost unwatchable with Lalonde in charge & it was getting so frustrating. I am so happy Yzerman finally made the move & fortunately it might not have been too late for them to still be able to make a real run at the playoffs like I think the entire fanbase was expecting this season.
Toronto is playing a less entertaining style than they did in years past yet are playing better than they have in previous years despite missing a 60+ goal scorer.
I'll say this again- McClellan is a splendid communicator and you can tell by the way he describes players attributes that he's intuitive and instructive. I love listening to the guy.
Lalonde was trying to teach them how to stop the collapse at the end. Sadly it looks like they will never be able to win without having to score 4+ goals because they can't defend properly

I don’t want to say we’re a cup contender by any means.. I really feel like lalonde had everything he needed really, other than to grab the room and let them go and grow. A lot of speed and young skill with these guys

Wings played a near perfect game tonight. Kaner and Ray with 3 point nights, and Cat stays hot. Depth chipped in as well. I’m so damn happy Lalonde is gone, imagine if he was fired sooner…. Todd explains his vision and demands accountability. It’s insightful to listen to him speak post game.
Lalonde was trying to get them to work on defending because last year defensively they were struggling horribly and couldn't win hardly any games without scoring at minimum 3 goals. Goal scoring league wide is going down for the 3rd straight year and once march and april roll around it will drop even more since teams start defending more. Statistically offense drops in march and april each year. What lalonde was teaching them was how teams start playing in march and through the playoffs. Everyone is excited now about how we are playing like we did last year offensively, but eventually it will stop working as well when teams tighten up and we will be screwed just like last year when we finished the last 10 going 3-5-2 because we won't be able to outscore our defensive inabilities.
Last year Detroit finished with 41 wins. They won only 5 of the 17 games they scored 3 goals in. They won only 2 of the 12 games they scored 2 goals in, and 0 games of the 7 games they scored 1 in. In games they scored 4 goals in, the 40 games they scored 4+ goals, they allowed 3+ goals in 27 of those games. With lalonde this year they won 3 of the 6 games they scored 2 goals in and won 1 of the games they scored 1 goal in, something they hadn't done since march 17th of 2022. The fact of the matter was detroit needs to learn to win low scoring games. The best teams know how to do that. We saw buffalo miss the playoffs despite scoring the 3rd most goals in 2022-2023 because they couldn't keep a puck out of their net and last year detroit would have made playoffs but they had multiple games where they lost because they couldn't keep the puck out of their own net. The san jose loss where they lost 5-6 in OT, they lost to seattle 4 to 5 in OT, they lost to ottawa 4-5 in OT, they lost 4-5 to dallas in regulation, they lost 4-8 against edmonton, and so many losses where they scored 3 goals in. The goalies were a problem, but other teams had worse goalies and could overcome those issues with better defending. Detroit didn't do that and it cost them. Lalonde was trying to teach the guys to fix their issues. If they can't win a game without scoring 4+ goals, they will never win crap when it matters.

@Shroomer47 kuemper was playing out of his mind, and again since that year, goal scoring has been going down. Thay year it peaked. Now its dropping again. Last year the final 10 games couldn't outscore our problems. Got shut down by Washington and multiple other teams.
Jarrad- Did you NOT see the 2nd period? Look at the shots for it. Our break out and puck possession is improving defense. Our d has improved since Todd took over. Lalonde couldn't get the balance that Todd is improving on. Even Stevie y knew that lalonde couldn't bring the balance that we need. A lot of what you point out can be true, but the fact is that lalonde couldn't do it clearly true. That's why different coaches are needed. Won't surprise me a bit if Todd gets replaced before we win cup again. I hope not, but it might be the way.

You could tell the boys never really believed in Lalonde, it showed in their play and faces. Kane was a dead giveaway it was Lalondes system.
