The term on over 30 players killed us. Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Ericsson, Kronwall, Helm, Abdelkader. Holland's "thanks for your service" contracts set the rebuild back almost 10 years.
Among the current or recent former Red Wings with no-trade clauses in their (too long, too expensive) contracts: Justin Abdelkader, Gustav Nyquist, Darren Helm, Danny DeKeyser, Jonathan Ericsson. An absolute recipe for long-term occupancy in the basement. And it's entirely on Ken Holland.
The 2002 Detroit Red Wings were the best team I've ever seen in my years watching hockey. Dominik Hasek, Chris Chelios, Niklas Lidstrom, Pavel Datsyuk, Brendan Shanahan, Brett Hull, Igor Larionov, Steve Yzerman, Sergei Federov, Luc Robataille (that's 10 Hall of Famers on one team!). Hell, even their role players, Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby, Darren McCarty, Mathieu Dandenault, Tomas Holmstrom, Manny Legace as a back-up, were all excellent in their roles. And they could play really well together and beat you any way they liked. They were tough, they had finesse, they had shooting and they were great defensively. You'd never have a team like that now in the salary cap era. But one of the good things about that team was its owner was really involved and willing to spend money. I'm a bit surprised Mike Ilitch wasn't mentioned in this video. I think his death played a role too.
@@dustyb58 Getting a bit too confident I guess. They still finished with 116 points and the Presidents Trophy despite not doing well down the stretch. I guess it took losing those two playoff games to realize they had to wake up. That Vancouver team was a good eight seed too. They had one of the better lines in hockey at that point and a solid defence corps.
@@BloggerMusicMan No, they didn't get too confident. They had the Presidents trophy wrapped up with about 12 games left to play, so Scotty Bowman started resting players. A LOT. And it almost bit them in the ass. But, after losing the first 2 games at home to Vancouver, they caught a break in Game 3, with the Lidstrom shot.....THEN they flipped on the switch. But, when the team REALLY flipped on the switch, was when they fell behind Colorado 3 games to 2 in the Conference Finals. Colorado didn't score a single goal after game 5.
@@BloggerMusicMan that Canucks team was on fire going into the playoffs that year too. Might have pulled off the upset too had Cloutier not allowed that centre ice goal to Lidstrom in game 3. That completely changed the tide of that series. I still miss those West Coast Express days though.
@@kdutch98 The point about Bowman resting his players is a really good point for why they lost most of their last 10 games. I'll definitely take that into consideration. I know that's how the Vancouver series went chronologically, but I'm not a fan of explanations that involve one moment changing the tide in a series. Martin Brodeur gave up a goal in the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals that was similar in a lot of ways (weak shot, second period Game 3, gives the Ducks a 2-1 lead) and the Devils still went on to win. I think probably because the Devils were a superior and experienced team. And don't get me wrong, as important as the Lidstrom goal was in deciding Game 3, it's still Vancouver's prerogative to get it together for games 4, 5 and 6, which either they didn't do, Detroit just played better or (probably) a mix of both. The Colorado point is interesting. I think falling behind in a series, not just in games, is more convincing as an explanation for why that lights a fire under a team. Especially when it's potentially do or die. That Colorado team was also a defending Stanley Cup champion with a very stacked roster in itself, so falling behind to them was not that shocking to begin with. Everyone knew that series was going to be competitive.
Thanks for the video. 17-18 was the first season that both the Detroit Red Wings AND the Montreal Canadians missed the playoffs in the same year, since the NHL started. They repeated the feat in 18=19.
Looks like it'll happen again this year. Still lots of hockey to be played though. Detroit is currently the worst team in hockey but Montreal can still the make playoffs if they pull their heads out of their asses.
What I find so incredible about this is that even when the team was falling apart, they were still able to make the playoffs for 25 consecutive years. I think that really speaks to the talents of core players like Nick Lidstrom, Pavel Datsuyk, and Henrik Zetterberg most of all.
Yeah but the obsessive drive to make it to the playoffs every year made the rebuild more and more difficult. Eventually they had nothing left to build on.
@@filipnassen9076 They just didn't utilize their rookie players at the time. Nyquist, Tatar are both still very good NHL players right now and if things went the way they should've they both wouldve blossomed into even better players if Ken Holland just had faith and was smart with them. They brought them up late they were both like 23 or 24 years old when they made the wings. When instead they should've been brought up when they were both about 21 or 22 years old because they were both ready then but again all that is mainly because Ken Holland didn't want to disrupt the core players at the time when Nyquist and Tatar were there to kick off a new Era for the wings and were the guys to build around at that time. I distinctly remeber me and my brothers talking about this when tatar and Nyquist started getting 22 23ish years old that Ken Holland and Babcock were waiting to long to make them full time Red Wings. They had Zetterberg til like 2018, so to say they couldn't have made the playoffs each year after it ended given the circumstances is laughable because they very well could have kept that train rolling but Ken Holland was not good at knowing when to bring players up from the AHL and Mike Babcock didn't help with that either because it should've been a priority at the time. They'll get back to their winning ways this season.
as a 32-year old Red Wings fan, I must admit that I'm not mad about the rebuild/end of the dynasty. I'm grateful that I was able to witness my team win championships as a child in 97/98, teen in 2002, and college kid in 2008. so many RW fans either are too young to remember the 90s cups, or old enough to remember the Dead Wings era. I feel blessed to have been born when I was born. Sure, it sucks that it all fell apart, but man, FOUR CUPS in my lifetime? That was fun/awesome and I think someday Stevie will get us back there. Until then, we'll cherish the memories and root for the current team!
As a Dallas Stars fan I HATED THE RED WINGS!!! They beat us in 1998 and 2008 in the WCF en route to the Stanley Cup. When the Stars 11 year run of greatness ended in 2008, they only fell into MEDIOCRITY until we got Jim Nill from Detroit and now, we are WINNING AGAIN!!! I went to a Stars vs. Red Wings Game in 2005 at the AAC and MY GOD the Red Wing fans were SO ANNOYING after they won. The BRAGGED ALL THE WAY TO THE PARKING LOT!!!
I could definitely notice in his last few years as a Red Wing that he was slowing down. But he absolutely still had his hands, just didn't have his speed like when he was younger... Injuries definitely didn't help him.. as someone who has been a diehard Wings fan for my entire life
You can't talk about this dynasty without mentioning that from their loss to the Devils in 95 to their loss to the Penguins in 08, they were either in the Finals or lost to the team that made the Finals.
The Red Wings most likely would have won the Cup in 2013 if they managed to beat the Blackhawks, they were the two hottest teams that postseason and it's a shame they had to meet in the 2nd round.
totally agree .. I wish he would of mentioned this cause we were up like 3-1 in the series or something too right? lost game 6 by 1 goal and game 7 in OT ... not one mention that Hawks go on to win the cup
Until you remember that our scrappy squad of rookies would have had to get past a brutal and banging LA Kings that won the Cup the year prior and would again the year after. While I have extremely fond memories of the Wing's 2013 playoffs, I don't for a minute think they would have survived those Kings. I'm surprised Chicago did.
As a life long Wings fan , I can tell you that the knowledgeable fans in Detroit knew that the 09 finals loss to the penguins was the end. The Wings were old by then and key players would be gone with in a year or so... Homer, Nicky, and Ozzie were on their last legs. Thank you for all the great years Wings!!!!
pens longest playoff drought was 6 playoffs in a row 1982-83 thru 88-89 only 6 years lol nice try weve only missed playoffs 17 times in 51 years pens haters make up fake facts lol
@@hugh2hoob668 ...Loool nobody hates the Pens, don't flatter yourself! I like the Pens and always have since super Mario. I don't care how many years you "made the playoffs" , The horrible Detroit Lions make the playoffs every now and then.. that doesn't mean they are relevant. The Pens were never considered a real contender those years, not like the perennial favorite Wings were. Why are you even talking about that on this comment? Wings haters must be delusional lol.
One thing lots of people forget about the playoff streak is just how much longer it _could have_ been: Between 1967 and 1983 the "Dead Wings", as people called them then, only made the playoffs twice, in 1970 (losing to Chicago) and in 1978 (beating Atlanta then losing to Montreal). After that though it was like a switch flipped, and between 1984 and 2016 the Wings _missed_ the postseason just twice, in 1986 and 1990. That's *29 out of 32* seasons where they saw the playoffs.
They were good in 86-87 made it to back to back conference finals. just some dumb trades by Lemers. Oates for Federko and Murphy, Klima, and Graves for Carson.
The players mentioned in this video were legends. Legends can never be replaced. I remember reading on a message board one time, someone criticizing Holland for not replacing Lidstrom. Lidstrom is one of the best defenceman ever, he can't be replaced.
The downfall of the Wings happened when Ken Holland's ego got in the way. This collapse, I am 100% confident, could have been avoided had he stepped down as GM and let Stevey Y take over when it was first proposed. That said- Aside from the 2000-2001 Colorado Avalanche, the Detroit Red Wings, for close to 15 years, were hands down THE best team in the NHL. It always absolutely sucked playing against them.
their skating defense was always really good. not too many bruisers but many high IQ guys that disrupted you from making good passes or being comfortable around blue line. Lot of speed and aggressive attacking and a lot of two way players so you can't matchup or exploit weakness, except for size.
@@imaratspal but they didn't collapse, they even went on to win another Cup in 1990 , and that was without Gretzky, Coffey, or Fuhr (who was on the team but wasn't the starter anymore)
1997-2008 was the dynasty I grew up with. It’s such a great time to have been a wings fan. The Russian Five, the Grind Line, Stevie Y and the Avs rivalry. It was pure bliss for any Red Wings fan. Now ten years later we are bottom dwelling team with bad contracts, a washed up Ken Holland and an uncaring owner. The future looks bright with Steve Yzerman in management but it’s too early to say if this will change anything or just stay the same.
I was born in 97 and didn’t become a hockey fan until after the 08 run so my only experience is heartbreak really. I like the young core we were left in an ok position not great not terrible.
The Northie the future looked bright before Stevie even became our new GM. Holland has been making a lot of good trades & has been drafting well.. not to mention Larkin,AA,mantha, bertuzzi etc. plus we have a lot of good prospects.. the Griffins won the Calder cup twice in recent years.. Stevie has a headstart now bc Holland left him with some good prospects.. now I can’t wait until a few of these bad contracts are up!!!!
Iraq Lobsta!! 45 the rumor is that MR.I wanted him to keep the streak alive & wanted him to sign those contracts.. every GM would Atleast make a couple mistakes while they’re working with a team.. for him being at the top for so long it’s actually pretty impressive on how good he was at hiring the right people etc. I wouldn’t want any other GM other then Stevie.. but I’m really happy Stevie is replacing holland...Good luck Edmonton if you give him some time he will deff right your ship & seeing that you’re team is already good, hopefully he gets them into the playoffs next year before Conor Mcdavid snaps LMAO
@@gaffneyrailroading1982 If you've seen any news about the parking lots and boarded up buildings surrounding the new arena (compared to all the development that is happening within blocks of non Illitch owned land), it's hard to see Chris Illitch as caring. They've broken almost every promise other than the arena itself and there's more development happening by the stadium the family left 20 years ago (Tiger Stadium in Corktown) than the brand new one surrounded by their properties.
Detroit and Colorado rivalry in the 90's was insane. I've yet to see hockey like that to this day. I'm so glad I got to experience it in my lifetime. Still a Wigs fan despite them not being as good as they used to be. I will always be their fan. Stevie Y was my idol as a kid and I still have his jersey whenever I watch a Wings game. They'll be back to glory one day.
What goes up must come down. We were spoiled in Detroit with the team we had, but as Steve Dangle said when going over a 2017 Wings loss against Toronto, 'Wings remind me of The Leaf's when they were last in the league. Young, eager, fun to watch, full of heart, and missing one key piece (For Tor it would later be Matthews).' Still holding out hope that we get a higher draft pick next year compared to what we've been getting the last few years.
Yep. Been waiting on this one for a while. Knew it was bound to come. Actually brought a tear to my eye being a life long Red Wings fan. But hey, Stevie Y is back, we got those four young guns, the future is looking up for Detroit.
I can’t wait to see what Stevie Y is going to do, I think in another 2-3 years we’ll be back into being a playoff contender. I also think we need to name Larkin captain. But not for at least another year
Every team has to rebuild at some point. Had Suter and Parise signed the consequences had been really bad long term, but they can recover from where they are now and have already started to.
Timmy Johnson unfortunately for the Wings, Max Talbot had other ideas. I’m a Pens fan but the 08 and 09 Finals were both some of the most exciting hockey I’ve ever seen. Each team was destined to win the year that they did
@@thereddhare we should have won that effing series. I dont think Malkin dominates games 3 and 4 in pitt with Datsyuk in the lineup. And so many missed chances in games 6 and 7 :(
@@ericbrewerguitar1499 Can't argue with that...I recall reading somewhere in which Babcock (or was it Holland) mentioned how the Wings were gassed - as in the younger Pens really pushed them to the limit in '09.
Rough times ahead for us bro. Worst team in hockey right now. Time to fire the coach and sign Gallant. It seems as though he has fallen into our laps. I think we sign him this offseason.
Mike Ilitch was the most important piece to the Wings' success. Scotty Bowman elevated the team to championship level, and their Swedish scout whose name I forget (Andersson, maybe?) kept the European pipeline flowing by securing amazing players late in rounds/drafts. When they won the cup in 2008 I think Brad Stuart was the only player on the roster that had been drafted in the first round (and not by Detroit), and remember Lidstrom and Franzen were 3rd rounders, Datsyuk a 6th rounder, Zetterberg 7th round, Holmstrom 10th, and so on. Yes they benefited from free agency and trading for players that wanted to come to Detroit to win a cup. But it's hard to argue that they just bought their success when in some aspects it was the opposite, many players (e.g., Lidstrom) agreed to play for less money and the team was loaded with star players they had drafted themselves in late rounds. It's especially impressive given that they often had fewer draft picks and, due to their success, their draft picks were always toward the end of each round.
Thanks You! Kenny is the most overrated gm. He came into the team in 97. We had already been to the cup. we already had Steve, lids, Fedz, Drapes, Shanahan, Vladimir and Murphy.
Being a Wings fan all my life and only being 24 all I knew was them being great. Slowly I’ve watched my idols leave the team and the play decline. However growing up only knowing them as great will make me appreciate their build back up to greatness that much better. Happy to see Stevie Y (the Captian) back home. The true rebuild begins.
Fun fact: Hossa played for 3 teams in 3 years, making the finals in each, and winning only the 3rd time (with the Blackhawks, where he beat the Red wings in the conference final).
Even funner fact. Big Hoss joined the Wings after his Penguins lost to them in the '08 finals. A year later he makes it back to the SCF, a rematch against his former Penguins team, losing a heartbreaking game 7. Third time's the charm for Hossa, as he finally finds a home with the Blackhawks the next year and makes it back to the finals, 3 years consecutively, to win his first Stanley Cup.
Detroit may not be the team their fans want today, However you got to admit that Bertuzzi, Mantha and Larkin are a treat to watch and a small glimpse of what is yet to come. Things will once again be exciting im detroit
I'm so glad they're rebuilding now. You could tell it needed to happen ever since the Nashville loss. Now we can get some blue chip prospects to get excited about, and only a few more years until the bad contracts come off the books.
Will's vocal pauses in his narration give me life. "Part of the original core remained: The... grind line's Kris Draper." Don't know why, but it does it for me.
I have been an avid Detroit fan for my entire life. I have the Video Paused. I am extreemly happy you made a Collapse video about them because I want my pain out for everyone to see. Very humbling. But regardless, You guys are awesome. Keep it up cause we all want more.
Midway through the Wings final season at the Joe, Detroiters had declared the 2nd coming of the Dead Wings. At the end of 2018 the Pistons were the only Detroit team to have a winning record that year.... 1 game up from an even record. Its a rough time for Detroit sports fans
With 6 Stanley Cup Finals appearances and 4 Cups, no one is feeling sorry for them outside of Detroit. The Red Wings 15-year run as a seriously contending team is a lot longer than most teams ever enjoy.
4 of those Stanley cup finals appearances with 3 cup victories occurred before any league wide salary cap was implemented ans enforced Up until 2006 they seemingly could purchase any notable free agent they wished
Very valid point. I would say 2013-14 onforward is a cautionary tale for teams like Blackhawks and Kings who had past success that probably need to rebuild instead of try to hang onto past glory before its too late
played hockey with lidstrom’s and holmstrom’s kid (at the same time) and my dad was the coach, Lidstrom was always hanging around the rink and he was the nicest guys you could ever meet. holmstrom was a really big dude and his son played exactly like him. it’s a bummer that they moved back to sweden. my dad walked into a restaurant on his work lunch with his work friends a couple weeks ago and all of my dad’s friends were dumbfounded when Lidstrom walks in and goes right to my dad, shaking his hand and talking for about 10 minutes. really miss those guys
No mention of that epic 2nd round series between The Blackhawks vs these Red Wings. No mention of Hossa going and leaving the Red Wings. I’m just saying you mentioned everything else. Should have put that as part of the story.
I love my red wings. Try not to ever miss a game even though they are in a rebuild and are hard to watch nowadays. Pavel datsuk was an amazing player and we may never see another guy like him.
I’m surprised there’s no mention of 2013. There was a mention of the Red Wings dropping from contention status to a recurring playoff team hoping to get hot, and 2013 was the year they got hot. They upset the #2 seed Anaheim Ducks in the first round and had the Presidents-Trophy winner Chicago Blackhawks on the ropes in the conference semifinals with a 3-1 series lead (a deficit the Blackhawks had not successfully climbed out of in franchise history at that point in time) by winning three straight over the Blackhawks (the first and only time the Blackhawks lost three straight games that year). Had they beaten the Blackhawks, the Red Wings certainly had the ability to top the defending champion Los Angeles Kings in the conference finals as well as the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals to continue the dynasty. Unfortunately, the Red Wings lost the last three games of the series to the Blackhawks, including Game 6 by 1 goal and Game 7 in overtime, and they never recovered.
I love these types of videos and getting a more in-depth look at history of franchises. I really enjoy seeing the newspaper article headlines and such, for some reason I always find those fascinating.
2:39 I was there sitting next to another pair of Penguins fans at Game 7. I remember the puck ringing off the post (watching replays now, it seems that wasn't caught on the live broadcast) and the Red Wings defenseman who shot it thought it went in and raised his hands. My heart stopped. When it became apparent the puck hadn't gone in and I watched Penguins equipment fly into the air I was in disbelief. I couldn't process what I just saw and couldn't process watching every player raise the cup right in front of me. Something I'll remember forever.
@J M The Red Wings didn't actually start rebuilding until Yzerman replaced Holland. Ken continued to resign veterans and throw money at old free agents while chasing the 8th seed. Still saddled with Holland's contracts but Stevie is making all the right moves and the odds are pretty good he turns it around.
It's great to be a wings fan, it's tough to see us struggling these days but our 25 year playoff streak was really something to behold. With a solid core developing and well managed draft pics we'll rise to glory again soon. LGRW
I love the video, but there’s some stuff worth mentioning that’s left out. 1. Owner Mike Illitch was the reason for the bad contracts and prolonging the rebuild we needed after the 2013 season. He demanded we compete, as would his other team, the Detroit Tigers. It’s not a coincidence that 2 teams from the same city with the same owner made the same poor decisions. He signed aging vet Victor Martinez over Dave Dombrowski’s head the same way he pushed for Ericsson and Abdelkader to get lengthy extensions. 2. Johan Franzen’s concussion issues should be at the forefront of the collapse. We picked him over Hossa and then watched Franzen kill himself to get on the ice. He quite literally can’t skate again because of brain trauma. If Hossa was there instead, we probably win in 2013. If neither are there, we would have been able to overpay Suter/Parise, but they likely still go to Minnesota. Nonetheless, I have a genuine theory that the Franzen signing changed the entire NHL post lockout. If that move is different, the entire league changes. 3. It’s unfair to leave out the severity of our lack of first round draft picks from 2000-2009. We had 3 in 10 years while others had 3 in the same year. Coupled with the career ending health scare for our future #1 defenseman in Jiri Fischer back in the mid 2000’s, the organization couldn’t grow talent on the back end that led to our collapse.
Native Detroiter and life long wings fan. You guys summed it up perfectly. Being a Wings fan was pretty darn easy for a lot of years and it was a lot of fun watching this amazing team. The consensus in Detroit was if the Tigers, Pistons, and most of all the Lions suck?... who cares we still got the Wings!
Alfie was the last great pre-retirement steal since Modano. The kids need at least one old school leader on the ice. Holland's biggest whiff was letting Florida get Jagr when he came back... Because the price was too "high" I'd still love to see Jagr in a wings jersey (he's also 30 games shy of Howe's 2nd all time gp)
@Charlie Cross How stupid are you? Look at Tampa as a roadmap. However long it took him to change them is how long he'll need here. I saw the results, I'm okay waiting.

The day that Ryan Suter and Zach Parise both turned down "Hockey Town" to go to Minnesota was when I knew that it was over. Detroit used to field teams of All Stars looking to win a cup. Everyone was so sure that one or both of those guys would sign here...
@J M Vladdy/Jiri/Franzen, the big 3 of tragic endings. Too much focus goes onto Franzen for his cap hit and bad contract. It’s not part of the game for us fans to be involved in. His paycheck isn’t our business, he deserved a better hockey story.
@@Kwright304 Yes, he has his name on the Cup for '98. But the Wings had to petition the league to allow them to add him. They won 1 cup with him playing, and 3 cups without him playing. His accident, while tragic, had NOTHING to do with their collapse that happened over 10 years later.
Give it another 3-4 years and the Wings will be back in major contention. So many great talents in the AHL right now and at the beginning of their NHL careers. AA, Larkin, and Zadina should form the new dominant core
you need to do the collapse of the Dallas Cowboys post-dynasty. Took six years to go from the top of the world to back to back 5-11 seasons and keeps pumping out drama
That's an easy one,,they prematurely fired the coach,,the league figured out the quarterbacks game and neutralized him and the defense got old real fast
As much as o hate the red wings for majority of my life the red wings were a powerhouse. I hate the red wings but they are one of the greatest dynasty’s in hockey. You have to respect what they created for 25 years.
Geez, watching this you would almost think the wings sucked because they didn't win twenty straight cups. I remember in 09 something about a lidstrom lacerated onion from a spear from one of the blackhawks and Brad Stewart giving away the puck in front of his own net for a goal in game six Cindy Crosby did nothing in the series because zeterberg shut him down yet he said zeterberg sucked and was only good because of lidstrom. Those are my memories of 09
Brett Hull had already won the Cup with Dallas before signing with Detroit. The suggestion that he went to Detroit to finally win the Cup makes me wonder how old was the person who wrote the script for this edition of Collapse.
It's been a tough few years as a Wings fan, but man from 1990 until they missed... what a ride. I was a kid then and i'll never forget the sheer dominance in the 90s, the incredible rivalry with the Av's, and that incredible 2002 team. Hopefully Stevie Y can bring the magic back to the team. We have some really good young skilled players, but it may take another year or two of building the team and building team chemistry.
Collapse ideas: -How the Cavs wasted LeBron's talents, and when he left, just fell apart -How the Phillies turned from perennial contenders to an old regressing franchise -How the Indians f***ed up their chances in the late 90s and did it even more in the 2000s -How the Dbacks ousting a packed Yankees team remains only in memory -How the LA Kings lost glass shoes after Cinderella runs (see what I did there?)
For the Phillies, on one hand I agree that would make an interesting video to see how horribly we fell to from what we had with 2008 and how good we were in the years after. On the other hand, we're the favorites to win the division and hopefully with players like Hoskins, Harper and Segura, I do feel a World Series is destined for this team in due time. Also, I asked them on Twitter if they would be doing a collapse video on the LA Kings, and they said they have it on the list. So it sounds like that one's coming eventually.

It's incredible how that team won ONE game in their final 10 and lost the first two playoff games to Vancouver. Then they flipped a switch.
And it happened a 2nd year in a row

Babcock was likely busy going through Larkin and Tatar’s phones
As a Michigander and Wings fan this video is honestly so sad. These guys gave so much life to the collapsing city around them.
Collapsing city? 🤷♀️
they did what they had to do to save the team, you got five championships in thirteen years now you suck lol but you had a hell of a run
as a 32-year old Red Wings fan, I must admit that I'm not mad about the rebuild/end of the dynasty.
You can't talk about this dynasty without mentioning that from their loss to the Devils in 95 to their loss to the Penguins in 08, they were either in the Finals or lost to the team that made the Finals.
Dallas: (In 1998-90 & 1999-00) Are they gone?
LA Kings: (In 2000-01) Yeah, they're gone.
The Red Wings most likely would have won the Cup in 2013 if they managed to beat the Blackhawks, they were the two hottest teams that postseason and it's a shame they had to meet in the 2nd round.

100% spot on.
Apparent that Bowman raised Hollands status. As soon as the Bowman family moved to Chicago, Ken was exposed.
What about Jim Nill, He is a GREAT GM for my Dallas Stars.

Now ten years later we are bottom dwelling team with bad contracts, a washed up Ken Holland and an uncaring owner. The future looks bright with Steve Yzerman in management but it’s too early to say if this will change anything or just stay the same.
I wouldn't consider Chris Ilitch "uncaring." He cared enough to get Yzerman back. He just isn't Mike.

What about the Stars in the 1990s. The Stars played either the Red Wings or Avalanche in the WCF?
I’ve been waiting for this one for a while. The pain still lurks as a Red Wings fan.

Fun fact: Hossa played for 3 teams in 3 years, making the finals in each, and winning only the 3rd time (with the Blackhawks, where he beat the Red wings in the conference final).
"Carpetbagger"???
Even funner fact. Big Hoss joined the Wings after his Penguins lost to them in the '08 finals. A year later he makes it back to the SCF, a rematch against his former Penguins team, losing a heartbreaking game 7. Third time's the charm for Hossa, as he finally finds a home with the Blackhawks the next year and makes it back to the finals, 3 years consecutively, to win his first Stanley Cup.

With 6 Stanley Cup Finals appearances and 4 Cups, no one is feeling sorry for them outside of Detroit. The Red Wings 15-year run as a seriously contending team is a lot longer than most teams ever enjoy.
4 of those Stanley cup finals appearances with 3 cup victories occurred before any league wide salary cap was implemented ans enforced Up until 2006 they seemingly could purchase any notable free agent they wished
from 2005 to now Pens have the longest active playoff appearance streak

Sad thing about Yzerman...despite the fact that he built that Lightning team from scratch, he didn't get any credit for their championship in 2020.

Hossa wasn’t signing up to play for Babcock. He wouldn’t sign up to play for Theirian the year before, either.
Do a moment in history/rewinder for when the red Sox and Cubs broke their respective curses
Tropikal_Fries And White Sox
Cubs since they were also against a team trying to break a long championship drought
Stevie Y will make them good again
God I hope
Yup! They need a goalie though. And will probably take about 3 years
@Charlie Cross were rebuilding idiot lol, its gonna take a couple years with the contracts off and some draft luck to become competitive again.
@Charlie Cross How stupid are you? Look at Tampa as a roadmap. However long it took him to change them is how long he'll need here. I saw the results, I'm okay waiting.
Can you do one of these for a reminder:
- Alec Martinez’s 2OT goal in 2014 Finals
- Alec Martinez’s OT goal vs CHI in Game 7 of the WCF
- Patty Kane’s OT goal vs LA game 5 WCF
- Patty Kane’s OT goal vs Philly to end 49 year drought
- Brent Seabrook’s OT goal vs DET in Game 7 of 2013
- Patrice Bergeron OT goal to cap comeback vs TOR in Game 7 of 2013
- Martin Gelinas’ OT goal vs Vancouver in 2004 Game 7
- Brendan Morrow’s 4OT vs SJ in 2008
- Darren Helm’s OT goal vs CHI in 2009 to send Wings to the finals
- Kozlov’s goal in 1995 vs CHI to send Wings to the Finals for the first time in 29 years
- Ray Whitney’s 2OT goal vs CGY in 1995
- Uwe Krupp’s 3OT goal in 1996 Finals to win cup.
- Adam Deadmarsh’s OT goal to beat DET in 2001.
Please do a Pistons and Tigers collapse as well!!!
Pro Unboxer 96 I would add Lions collapse... but unfortunately there’s nothing to collapse from. I’m a sad Detroiter
Tigers for sure. How they never won a title with all that talent is just baffling.
@@Hail2Pitt412 that starting rotation....just unbelievable
Pro Unboxer 96 actually if you really look at it if dotels arm doesn’t literally die and Valverde doesn’t forget how to pitch that 2013 team would’ve won
YEESSS!! The Pistons need one. That roster with Rip, Ben and Rasheed Wallace, Tayshaun Prince and the other members of that roster scared me.
The day that Ryan Suter and Zach Parise both turned down "Hockey Town" to go to Minnesota was when I knew that it was over. Detroit used to field teams of All Stars looking to win a cup. Everyone was so sure that one or both of those guys would sign here...
Forgot to mention what happened to Vladimir Konstitnov... that drunk limo driver! A shame really
While that was a tragic event, it really had no bearing on their "collapse"
They won 3 cups AFTER Konstantinov was injured....
@@kdutch98 Konstantinov has his name on the 98 cup, check yourself. They won 2.5 without him.
I would gladly take this collapse after all that glory. As a flyers fan I hope I see them win once before I die
Give it another 3-4 years and the Wings will be back in major contention. So many great talents in the AHL right now and at the beginning of their NHL careers. AA, Larkin, and Zadina should form the new dominant core
Don't forget about Stevie Y!
This aged like milk
you need to do the collapse of the Dallas Cowboys post-dynasty. Took six years to go from the top of the world to back to back 5-11 seasons and keeps pumping out drama
HELL YES!!!!! I was one of a few guys who suggested this on the last Collapse vid.
Next collapse : 2011-2013 San Francisco 49ers
I used to like kaepernick when he was a good quarterback.
It was pretty easy. They got rid of Jim Harbargh.
That's an easy one,,they prematurely fired the coach,,the league figured out the quarterbacks game and neutralized him and the defense got old real fast
Anthony Kernich harbaugh isn't a good coach. What has that guy ever won?
As much as o hate the red wings for majority of my life the red wings were a powerhouse. I hate the red wings but they are one of the greatest dynasty’s in hockey. You have to respect what they created for 25 years.
Collapse: Sacramento Kings, from being title contenders in the early 2000s to rebuilding for 10+ years.
Geez, watching this you would almost think the wings sucked because they didn't win twenty straight cups. I remember in 09 something about a lidstrom lacerated onion from a spear from one of the blackhawks and Brad Stewart giving away the puck in front of his own net for a goal in game six
Cindy Crosby did nothing in the series because zeterberg shut him down yet he said zeterberg sucked and was only good because of lidstrom. Those are my memories of 09
Funny how every Detroit team has a collapse video except for the Lions because well you need to be on top before you can collapse 😂
Brett Hull had already won the Cup with Dallas before signing with Detroit. The suggestion that he went to Detroit to finally win the Cup makes me wonder how old was the person who wrote the script for this edition of Collapse.
Would the Buffalo Bills' 4-straight Super Bowl appearances followed by a playoff drought from 1999-2017 be considered worthy of a Collapse?
Hameed Mourani yuppp id say so
It's been a tough few years as a Wings fan, but man from 1990 until they missed... what a ride.
Collapse ideas:
-How the Cavs wasted LeBron's talents, and when he left, just fell apart
-How the Phillies turned from perennial contenders to an old regressing franchise
-How the Indians f***ed up their chances in the late 90s and did it even more in the 2000s
-How the Dbacks ousting a packed Yankees team remains only in memory
-How the LA Kings lost glass shoes after Cinderella runs (see what I did there?)
The Cavaliers collapse is just getting started, friend. Just you wait.
@@lukeshaffer9316 I meant LeBron's first stint
@@callmesoftware8633 when it's all said and done, you could probably do a separate episode for each or a super-sized episode tying them both together.
Did you even bother to read the rest
For the Phillies, on one hand I agree that would make an interesting video to see how horribly we fell to from what we had with 2008 and how good we were in the years after. On the other hand, we're the favorites to win the division and hopefully with players like Hoskins, Harper and Segura, I do feel a World Series is destined for this team in due time.
Also, I asked them on Twitter if they would be doing a collapse video on the LA Kings, and they said they have it on the list. So it sounds like that one's coming eventually.
The wings from late 90s and 00's were the legendary team that got me into hockey. It's sad that they became Dead Wings again after they were the best
The Stars became just MEDIOCORE after our GLORY YEARS OF 1997-2008 and now we are GOOD AGAIN!!! I went games when the Stars played the Red Wings!!! You RED WHIMP FANS are so FREAKING ANNOYING!!!
@@rollingdudes8859 I havent watch them in few years because got tired of seeing them loose all the time lol. I guess I will check them out again
Do Toronto Blue Jays post 1993, after the glory days of 85-93
JordanCelica85 the 1999 team could win but ehh
As a Wings fan someday I'll watch this in full, sometime.
Still waiting for the leafs 60s dynasty collapse
Probably the best episode of the series
Who’s here after Detroit’s god knows how long losing streak?
These videos are fire thanks for making
As a Blackhawks fan, I want to laugh at the Wings' misfortune, yet I know their pain.
It's okay, we can just laugh at Toronto together.
As a Red Wings fan, I should’ve known this one was coming!! They tried to keep the playoff streak together, & the fellas got old. The young guys & replacements couldn’t overcome the aging of the team, & the streak ended. Now we are near the bottom of the league.
The Cincinnati Reds - from a championship in 1990 to clubhouse fights, front office turmoil and Griffey’s unfortunate snake-bit homecoming.
Also, nobody goes to their games. Seriously, nobody.
Pete Rose built that team. Once he was gone it fell apart. Pinella inherited it.
Who else loves hockey content on youtube like this? I wish there was way more!
Yeah but you got Stevie Y back from the Lightning... So I expect you will be back in two years. The man is a hockey genius.
And with Burnaby Joe helming the Avalanche, who are vastly improving, I expect a return of the Avs/Wings rivalry
JordanCelica85 that's gonna be hard considering the wings are in the east now. Don't get me wrong thatd be sick tho
This was ridiculously good 👌, subscribing
