    this may be a hot take, but personally i’m so glad that the terresan court was not in this book, because i would have been livid if any one of them died for this world. also, i hope that the asteri and the valg aren’t the same, because aelin went through SO MUCH to save her world and bryce did it in like a week?? i just feel like this book undermined everything the characters in the other series went through :(

    • @fantasyfixations
      @fantasyfixations  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      no i agree, i didn't really want the ACOTAR inner circle or terresan actually fighting in the final battle, i 100% wanted it to stay a CC battle and let that cast handle it for themselves. but what i did want and i think most of us were expecting was just more of a crossover as the different worlds helped CC figure out what needed to be done. it didnt really make sense to me that the IC wasnt more willing to help ?? especially once the family ties were revealed. like as much as rhys cares about family, i cant see how finding surprise blood relations on another world wouldnt be earth shattering for him.
      and i agree bryce being like super mega awesome wonderful fae queen was so annoying and it didnt feel realistic compared to the other MFC's at all. i'm all for her having a lot of power and getting to keep it in the end, but i wish she'd had to work a bit harder to get the things she wanted. that coupled with how mean and nasty she was being just left me feeling so annoyed that everything worked out for her in the end.

      WOW 😮Awesome review and recap of CC 3😅 I totally really liked this. I have noticed that for me Tamlin is the only “male” who is dealing with their ptsd or trauma. And so I totally agree that SJM can’t write “males” being sensitive or showing trauma and I don’t like how Bryce treats Hunt. 😅

      I don't think that the asteri are the valg because in tog if I remember correctly, they could tell if valg were around and the valg princes looked different than the asteri. Also their blood was desceibed in tog as smelling really awful and i dont recall that in cc. I also think it is noteable, what the king of the undead said. But then again, sarah made many valid points why the asteri are the valg

    Bryce was horrible this book. Her entitlement, hero complex and disregard for anyone around her was torture to read.

      it really was!! i've seen the theory of her slipping into a PTSD state which does make sense, but her attitude coupled with the fact she lies in her POVs made it hard for me to trust her enough to understand or connect with how she felt.

      Do you think SJM knew how much we’d hate her? Was it intentional?

  • @artisans8521
    @artisans8521 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +51

    What I hated were the Infodumps. And the new found arrogant traids in ms. Quinlan. My biggest problem was her opening a cofin with a Asteri in it in an Asteri free world. Without consent from its inhabitants. Without knowing the outcome. The risks. And having to be bailed out by Nesta. The coolest character in the book was definetly Hind. Lidia and Rhun were build up, and Nesta got a nice present in the end. I think she will use that trio in either Acotar 5 or CC 4 (there is a house still left right). But whether I will read them, she has to step up her writing a lot.

    • @fantasyfixations
      @fantasyfixations  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      given how truly clunky CC is when you first start book one, i didn't totally hate the weird voice mail info dump but i can see how it would be annoying. i think that because i was focusing on what that info meant for rhys it was holding my attention decently ??
      i agree, opening the coffin was just unhinged behavior to me. she was SO self-centered and not taking the time to be like "i have come to a totally different world, and i know how much this is scaring me, and if i want them to help me i need to be understanding and try to voice all of my concerns and fears but ALSO listen to theirs" like to just not register at all that they would also be scared and concerned and have families and friends to protect was just unacceptable to me lmao i know she was stressed and worried but that doesn't excuse just bulldozing into another planet and screwing them over REPEATEDLY and then being like "awww why are they
      so mad at me 👉🏼👈🏼" it just made her so hard to read and relate to personally.

      And the way Bryce got mad at Nesta and Az for killing the Asteri like "how dare you kill this very dangerous creature, I haven't asked all my questions yet. I could've killed her easily when I'm done" like Bryce was so delusional

  • @chelly6129
    @chelly6129 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

    Bryce telling Lidia to basically suck it up was so hypocritical since she endangers the whole mission a few pages later by not sticking to the plan and using up most of her magic on one asteri while ignoring Hunt, who tells her to stick to the plan

    The fact that this was all 1 book spanning 7-10 days is mind blowing to me. It should have been broken out into 2 books: house of flame and shadow AND house of many waters, giving SJM time and space to flesh out all these dropped plot points and find a freaking use for Ithan and Tharion. We could have gotten payoff for the river and ocean queens and so much more. But no.
    I agree with the people saying SJM figured out she wanted to keep writing more ACOTAR and TOG books while working on CC3 but she needed the final battle to happen on Midgard first to push ACOTAR forward. Too bad too because I think this could have been great and instead we got what we got.

    This is hands down the best review I've seen so far! I'm a massive SJM fan and I was so horribly disappointed and confused by this book. I've been searching for reviews because the writing in this took such a huge nose dive from her other works. This book just pales in comparison to her other series. Def keep making more videos! I feel like there is so much to say about this book.

    • @fantasyfixations
      @fantasyfixations  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      thank you so much thats so kind of you to say!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it :) the longer I sit having finished it I just keep coming back to how disappointing and lack luster it was. The rise of people really defending it is wild too, because it's not even just the plot I think is lacking but the editing and writing itself. We KNOW she can do better and I think it's important to talk about when things don't work out - especially because a lot of stuff is pointing to it being a team/editor problem for her. I hate to think her team will get so comfortable they just stop helping her create these awesome worlds and stories like TOG.

    I would have actually found it very interesting if Bryce became a villain. Like we saw glimpses of how she’s very hypocritical and power hungry and instead of trying to justify it, she should have gone further into that path and realize that she’s no better than Theia or the autumn king. I think Sarah lay out a strong potential for her to become a villain with all the things she said and did and even hunt saying he hates her (even for just a second). I actually thought she would become kind of like Theia or her father until the she lay of the crown. (Which I thought was so weird and random for her)

  • @user-bb7sv7zx2v
    @user-bb7sv7zx2v 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    Yes!! I was so surprised that Bryce had 2 years and still was not over her trauma of loosing Danika. And still showed not empathy towards Hunt. I do not like them together anymore, for all the reason you mentioned. Plus the way they went after Rhys for Nesta, FYI, NESTA HERSELF even said that even Cassian was mad at her. She was wrong and still everyone went after Rhys. I have no words..... Por Az..

  • @agentko
    @agentko 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

    I think a lot of my disappointment comes from knowing Sarah CAN write decent battle scenes that don’t feel flat, and fight scenes that have decent payoff, and characters with actual stakes, because she did a way better job in Throne of Glass. So to not get any of that here made it feel like so much potential wasted. I haaaaaaaaated how every single fight scene was so easy. It was such a let down. Oh no bad guy-poof-vanquished. Too easy, it’s boring. There weren’t any actual stakes or consequences for anything so it felt very much “the rules don’t matter and nothing is real”

    • @fantasyfixations

    Love this video! This series has definitely fallen flat for me especially after how much I enjoyed ToG and ACOTAR, the characters especially. It was also really funny to me when Bryce compared Hunt and Cassian, acting like they aren't a copy paste of one another.
    So much of this felt irrelevant to me (like Ithan and Tharion) and most of the villains didn't seem as great as we don't have any idea about their motivation.
    The ending felt so similar to ACOWAR which I was so odd and I was half hoping she had died, like you mentioned. I was also expecting her to switch places with Danika because it seems like SJM thinks Danika should have been the protagonist considering how many of the plot twists is something she set in motion years before

    • @fantasyfixations
      @fantasyfixations  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      100% it feels like chunks of this book are nothing but filler that doesnt amount to anything; i'm all for the little scenes showing small moments with the characters but i want them to mean something in the end.

    1:22:47 Bryce at this point justs sounds like in another story she could full on evil girlfriend that's only exploiting him for his powers and what he can do for her and Hunt's only staying with her because he believes what they have is love until the female lead comes around and basically tells him what she's doing isn't okay and even though they're at war, he doesn't have to be okay all the time. Honestly, Someone could write a book about it or if you know anyone that has written something similar please tell me, cause the onky time I've seen something similar is in fanfics of other books/shows

I have the entire series with the original covers and I straight up wore a lot of them out from rereading them over and over. My amazing BF got me the entire series in the new cover art and I have to say… they are much better than the original artwork. I can literally do a side-by-side comparison on my shelf and the new art just looks so much prettier. The art style is also more mature. I would highly recommend getting copies with the new cover art.

    Ive been listening to this while cooking dinner over the past few days and you're right on point with everything. It fell so flat for me. I was really expecting EOS and ACOWAR vibes from this book because its supposedly book 3 of 4 but it didnt pack nearly the punch it needed to. I think the crossover felt meh. Bryce has never been my favorite but I pretty much couldn't stand her for most of this book. I was riding for Lidia. Bryce in general just did not feel like a fully fleshed out FMC if we're looking at SJMs history. She felt like a giant cliche. The alphahole thing could have been done better. Bryce became an alphahole instead. And honesty i dont blame Danika for keeping info from her because girl was not and is still not ready for it. Bleh.

      as a person who always takes a lot of responsibility in everyday situations i sometime get a feeling that everyone else could step up a bit more. and given the "chosen" situation bryce is in (set up by sara ofc) i feel like she just needs a hand. and this hand in her situation is hunt as her mate. she needs him for support to feel a wee more protective but idk. but other than that i can sigh under every point you've made.

Needless to say, it was infuriating to me, the overall story, the character assassination, the convenience-plot and the plot-armour. I really think SJM bit off more than she could chew with this one.

    The way SJM made Bryce so unpleasant in the third book is part of the reason I couldn’t finish CC3. Omg and the info dumps?! SJM really disappointed me with this book and that makes me so sad because I like the CC series AND I love Nesta, but feel like both were treated so uncharacteristically that it pissed me off.

    I kinda wanted a longer power up. I wanted Bryce to train with the inner circel. I had a headcanon that she could use all that special power from the gate. So i hoped she would learn more about it with the inner circel and in hell. I wanted her to explore hell. There are to many main charakters, I love them all but the perspektive shift annoyed me so much...
    Edit: Same I also I wanted more of Hypaxia, i hope she gets a bigger role in the next book. I wanted to learn more about the witches and now she is also head of the house and without Jesiba as a second it's going to get intresting.

    People keep saying that Lidia is related to Brannon/Aelin/Dorian but on a second read I noticed she said she had named her kid after Brannon from "the oldest legends from her family's bloodline: a fae king from another world, fire in his veins, who had created stags with the power of flame to be his sacred guards"

      Also side note Prythian and Hybern maps are like versions of Britain and Ireland and ACOTAR is full of old Irish names so it makes sense that their descendants in Midgard would have Celtic names like Seamus, Declan, Cormac, Gwydion, Fionn, Morrigan. Even Ruhn's last name Dannan comes from Tuatha Dé Danaan.

I think for me one of the biggest things in hindsight that might drop my rating was bryce herself, because though i loved the book she was my least favourite part. Hunt felt like the main character i was routing for. Bryce came off as an Aelin copy but weaker and wrong.

    This is three months later, so you probably won't see this, but I just want to say that you're hilarious! I'm watching this now, despite the fact I read this on its release date because I've been going crazy this entire week thinking about how much I didn't like this book, so I've been binging reading vlogs, recaps, theories, etc. to try to see it from a different perspective.
    The only reason I even read the CC series is bc I didn't do enough research and was under the false impression that Aelin was basically 100% guaranteed to show up in CC3, and I think the disappointment of her not being in it really dragged the book down for me. That's why I believe Lidia was my favorite character because while I actually do love her character, it's really amplified by her relation to the Galathynius line. Similar to the Autumn King's good or bad arc, there were so many strings that were left untied in this book.
    I'm still going to read any book she releases with the HOPE Aelin shows up again (as you can tell, I'm obsessed with her), but if I was going to be reading 3 massive books, I at least wanted them to be good.

      yeah, i think a lot of people went into this thinking that aelin was 100% going to be involved. from what i saw, sjm didn't do a very good job of stopping those rumors, which makes sense because she obviously wants to sell books. but i do think it was pitched as this big crossover, so to only see a handful of our ACOTAR characters and not even have bryce meet feyre felt wild to me.
      i agree, i really liked lidia and im excited to hopefully see more of her!!

    My favourite character is Baxian. I fell in love with him. He is sweet, caring, open minded, and handled his turn from evil to good personality very wisely. And his lovestory with Danika, even we read only his own perspective left me heartbroken. I would like a prequel chapter just for them. And i think that the dead Danika is the real star of the series. Everything leads to her action. I wish somehow returned but no we had to read 150 pages about Ethan. Boring and unecessary sub plot. Generally, I loved the lovestory between Lidia and Ruhn but quickly became flat. I forced my self to read this third book. The storytelling is so flat.I waited something epic or at least a cliffhanger.

    I will say I am not a fan of the Acotar series for one, (I have read the books) and I don’t really like Rhysand or Feyre.
    BUT. Am I the only one that thinks the idea that there were other high ladies previously, kind of diminishes Feyre becoming the ‘first’ High Lady? And by proxy Rhysand giving her that position? Like it kinda makes that arc feel less important if she’s not the first and it’s not this GroUnD BReaKing thing that she is High Lady of the Night Court? I’m not sure if that being included is a retcon or just new information but meh.

      I took it more as rhys being like his ancestors in a way that his dad wasn't. sort of like he remembers the old ways or has a connection back to the older traditions, which seems to be a trend with him already. people in ACOTAR think he's being radical, but really they've just forgotten that at one point they were all connected and took care of each other. I have a feeling rhys either knows more than we're being led to believe, or there's going to be some complicated lore dropped in ACOTAR6 about why he's the way he is lmao

    I am so happy I found your channel. I have many thoughts. Ok, the storyline w. The viper queen why did she setup Astrid and ithan? Was she consorting with Sabine? Nothing made sense with this entire scene. With the dannika storyline wtf happened to mordoc? Am I blanking out? I remember a scene in cc2 when Sabine was all like.do not tell danikas father "mordoc" about danika bad things will happen Yada yada.. well wtf happen to him? He was second in command to the hind aka Lydia. Was he a rebel? so much could have happened with dannikas father. But nope. Let's be real the only real hero here was cormick and he wasn't even in this book. The entire rebel storyline just fell out. She had an epic setup to what? Nothing lol...
    I feel like this entire book was Author vs editor. Clearly Sarah J Maas has a formula and that formula was annihilated by some unseen unimaginative alternate ghost editor. It felt like edits were inserted and thats why nothing connected. I truly think Sarah j maas was fighting for this book but the editor had alot of say and control over her work. I watched an interview where they said Maas was going through some shit and the story she wrote isn't what she wanted to tell so she scraped it and started all over hence the 2 year wait. Idk if someone cam help me out remembering where mordoc went and that storyline I will be so grateful.

Like because Feyre is a mother now, she no longer exists?! The woman has the powers of 7 courts, you can’t tell me she wouldn’t have been so freaking helpful? I was actually kinda surprised at how many of your opinions I agreed with because I came out of the book mostly really liking it despite the issues 😅
    But anyway, the one thing I genuinely disagreed with you on is Bryce. She's always been an unreliable narrator, she's always lied to us in her POVs and you're definitely right that it is annoying, but I kinda got used to it by now. Anyway, point is, because she's unreliable, and maybe this is me giving her the benefit of the doubt, but I read her harshness towards especially Hunt, but also everyone else, as her reaction to her own fear. Like, she was so freaking scared of going into this and fighting this fight and she *needed* to know that Hunt was in it 100% no hesitation no second thoughts or she wouldn't be able to do it at all. Like, to me it just seemed like her terror response was to say "you either are in or out, no hesitations, no in between, commit now"
    I'm not saying that it's a good response and it certainly wasn't the right one and like I said, I certainly have plenty of other issues with the book, but that was how I was interpreting the Bryce stuff (though I definitely seem to be in trhe minority on that 😅)
