Although a few of my ancestors fought in WWI against the Belgians (most were in the Eastern Front), I have nothing but respect for the brave defence of the Belgians defending their homeland against impossible odds.
The Belgians put up one hell of a fight, held the Germans off long enough to give France enough time to prepare. King Albert the 1st is one of my favorite kings of all time. (pretty low bar I know.) But still...
Having the Lego. Building it this way and with so many changes through the short film. Adding the sound design. The animation. The cut. Truly a work of art.
Amazing. The depth of field, cinematography, set, the little details... the soldier's arm being bent backwards after being shot (1:56) is such a small thing but adds a little touch of reality. And these just keep getting better...
This was the Fort de Loncin, the only fort out of the twelve defending Liége that didn't surrender. The fighting for the fort lasted around nine days, during which it suffered constant bombardment for the 12th to the 15th. Like depicted in the recreation, the fort was eventually destroyed by the 42cm "Big Bertha" howitzer, which struck its magazine storage, detonating the 12 tons of explosives. Fort de Loncin served as a lesson in design, for the ammunition storage was built too close to the surface of the fort, making the ordinance vulnerable to artillery.
Fun fact! In real life, the gunner crew had to run an entire American football field away, put cotton in their ears, and even then they had to hold their mouth open, otherwise their ears would burst from the sheer explosive force.
Im glad lego animation is still a thing on youtube. I remember some of the first videos I ever saw on youtube when I was a young lad were lego animations on the family computer.

2:55 This is the Big Bertha forts killer cannon adopted by the German Empire in 1914, a total of 12 pieces were released. These forts killers fired at the fortress of Liege, Osovets and other fortresses in Europe surprisingly, the Osovets fortress Big Bertha could not destroy and the rest of the fortresses could.
Excellent, Just excellent. Loved the dramatic buildup of the 210mm shell detonating the forts magazine. Why don't we have movies like this in Hollywood?
Yeah, the Belgians had a very bad few days at Liege. Fort De Loncin (depicted in the film) did indeed receive a magazine hit during the battle, which resulted in an explosion that killed most of the soldiers inside. The fort is now a military cemetery and was never rebuilt.
