How To Create a Crank Wheel and Shutter Door in Source 2 Hammer

    This tutorial involves the use of the prop_animinteractable entity to create a crank wheel that controls a func_movelinear and a prop_dynamic rolling shutter door.
    This can be used to create all sorts of dynamic systems for the player to interact with.
    Made using the Half Life Alyx Workshop Tools version of Hammer for Source 2

    I know that this seems quite simple, but I was wondering if you could teach how to activate the player's flashlight in a dark room. I cannot figure out how to use a trigger to activate it.

    Are you thinking about making a tutorial about markers that are able to draw on surfaces?
    Btw I’m not super into mapmaking but your videos are entertaining to watch!

      I haven't made a markers tutorial, as I've seen a few other tutorials for it around and it doesn't seem like a very important thing to cover

    Very nice tutorials. Are you familiar with VScript by any chance? I'm a very experienced programmer, but the documentation is really lacking and I'm not sure what it can do in HL:A and what it cant. Looking at some of the weird example scripts it seems possible to create entire new entities just using Lua, but I see no documentation for this shit anywhere. Valve, give us a real SDK with C++ Codebase assess already.

      I'm not too familiar with VScript myself, but people are making progress with it. Afaik you can't create new entities with it at the moment, but I may be wrong
      All I can say is, keep an eye on the VDC, and try asking around on the Source modding discord servers

      Good idea. They're just a prefab. You can see how to load prefabs in my video on dynamic lights, but I'll make a video dedicated to them too

    Hi, could you do a video on how to use the point_value_remapper? I don't have Alyx, and I'm making something for SteamVR's Source 2, and this tutorial is essentially exactly what I want to do, have a wheel that turns in VR, which will open a door, however prop_animinteractable is unfortunately not in SteamVR's Source 2.

      I'm unfamiliar with the differences between HLA and SteamVR, but there is a tutorial on how to use point_value_remapper on the VDC you can refer to

      There is no water in Half Life Alyx unfortunately

      That'd be simple to achieve, just a physics prop and a phys_slideconstraint should work :)

    Do you/anyone reading this know about in Hammer view distance? In making a map a few weeks ago I've somehow changed my render distance in the 3d tools section to around a thousand units. I don't even know what I was doing when I did it. At some point I while hitting a few buttons my main viewing screen went black (unless looking at the sky) and so anything past 1k units is not drawn in.

      There should be an option for this if you go to Tools>Options>View 3D and reset Backplane distance to the default 25000

      I have a tutorial that covers switches
      Just add an output to that switch that opens or unlocks a prop_door_rotating_physics
