    I did my whole car with the 2 in 1 filler primer and gloss Advance Formula. Actually I did two coats of it in a lot of areas, as some areas I got runs/etc I needed to sand out, but other areas there were still so many pin type paint chips/etc. I'm super pleased how it came out, I might try cutting and buffing it with 2000-3000 grit, but I might not, as in all but very direct sunlight it looks fantastic. I also found 4 light coats was the best overall for results.

    • @JamesDguy
      @JamesDguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have 2 hvlp guns compressor water separator and all but it’s not just the views (part of it) but it’s easier for me to pick up a can shoot and spray. These advanced formula don’t NEED the clear like a paint hvlp would unless it’s single stage but then i have a compressor running the whole time and I do my work at night then got clean up. I prefer how clean the can paint turns out and if it gets messed up say on the bumper or something I don’t have to bring an entire paint booth with me to fix it haha just the can rolling around in the truck.

    I think the newer Rustoleum paints wrinkle stuff a lot more. :/ :/ :/ I think it's because they're forced to use acetone and not other solvents because of VOC regulations, but acetone of course will strip paint, compared to say, mineral spirits.

    • @JamesDguy
      @JamesDguy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good thing the advanced formula is a old product with a new label haha but your right

    • @GilBatesLovesyou
      @GilBatesLovesyou 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamesDguy Rustoleum's changed a lot of stuff. For house painting, I used Zinsser (Rustoleum) Cover Stain in a "low VOC" formulation and it absolutely sucks. Rustoleum also changed the quart and gallon cans of stuff, too, my Lowes sold off their high VOC versions for cheap on clearance when the low VOC versions came out. What's shitty about paint in general is they can keep the label the exact same, and they just need to change the specification number for a new formula legally. So many times with house paint I've had formulas change on me randomly, usually for the worse.

    Keep doing what you are doing. I have watched many of your videos, and you have always stated that anyone with patience and a willingness to try can get a nice lasting finish. Not once have you ever implied that your painting is show-car quality. And many times (IMHO) your work has turned out to be superior to some of the body shop paint jobs I’ve seen where people have spent hundreds. Thanks for posting results so regularly, for your explanations on how to achieve good results, and for your devotion to our Savior. An even better way to get an outstanding finish is using paint stripper, sand with 40 or 80-120 grit then self etch prime, sand with 400,600,800 grit wet or dry then paint also be sure to clear coat! I spray painted my truck years ago and after about a year it started fading really bad...but be sure to buy flexible primer for all your plastics

I have a question for you please...I've repainted the hood of my car a couple of times using rattle cans and no matter how hard I try to make sure I overlap each spray line I still get streaks/lines when it dries. Can you advise me on how to keep this from happening? I've used spray paint many times to paint smaller surfaces than a car hood with much success, however my hood gives me such a problem.

    • @asawanidivine9471

      You must spray half an inch..so that you cannot getting a steak or line

    • @acevedohiram
      @acevedohiram 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to be careful with the environment you're painting in when it comes to spray can. If it's too hot, or too windy your stuff can come out streaky. You have to chase the wet edge. If you can get the whole panel looking wet, then it will dry more evenly. It also helps to paint in more than one direction. Hoods are harder to do than smaller panels because of the tiny spray pattern of spray cans. If you're doing black or white rustoleum turbo cans have a bigger spray pattern.

    Your videos are great man. All of my cars have been used cars and most of the times the paint job was going bad or was bad. I could fix everything on the car but the paint. I don't have a lot of money so sending them to get painted was out of the question. Now thanks to you I drive nice looking cars in the color of my choosing. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

    You've already got 2 pounds of spray paint there.

    One thing I noticed now, trying again on another vehicle with no primer is that you end up actually using more paint and it never quite looks as good, as all the different areas have different surface porosity, and tend to suck up paints at different rates. I guess it would depend on the vehicle and layers of paint, this was going over a sanded down roller job (which is the dumbest thing on the planet to do) so there perhaps was a lot of paint behind it to suck up the gloss spray paint.

    Your paints jobs are great. Question... I've always wondered... the thing on the back bumper of the orange car.., what does that do for the vehicle? The metal net looking like thing.

    • @RussellTelker
      @RussellTelker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The rear bumper can turn into a parachute of sorts at high speeds, so you cut holes in the bumper to let the air out, many people then fit a grille of some form to pretty it up. That's what I believe you're seeing on the orange car. I've heard a lot of people call it a diffuser, but that's different and actually creates some downforce if properly designed...

    • @spartacussmith7070
      @spartacussmith7070 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those are called "speed holes" or a "speed hole diffuser." Very common on Civics because like the other user said, the rear bumper is relatively spoon shaped and air gets trapped in there creating a parachute effect. Best ways to combat air drag on these cars is to A. Lower the car so air is directed above and around, not below. B. Speed holes so the air that does get trapped flows through. C. Splitter/Lip to redirect air flow from hitting the front.

    • @spartacussmith7070
      @spartacussmith7070 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RussellTelker so the whole "Diffuser" thing comes from how the air flow is affected. On a lot of cars, you see the sort of venting under the bumper as a "diffuser" since it technically diffuses the air flow. "Speed holes" do however qualify as diffusers since the air flow is diffused and a regular diffuser can't be mounted under the bumper without heavy modification to the bumper, rear suspension(a lot of us have custom suspension in the rear), and exhaust.

    • @socksonfeet8125
      @socksonfeet8125 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I painted my old mustang blue, it lasted 2 years just fine in the sun before I sold the car, however it scratched really easily, because there is no clear coat to absorb key scratches, jeans, other car doors hitting it etc. I did primer 2 coats, sand in between coats and 2 coats color sand in between coats. I've done every car since with hvlp and rustoleum oil base gloss. $8/quart, and really only need 2 quarts. Materials comes out cheaper when using the hvlp and quarts, and its a lot easier than the tiny fan on spray cans, but you have to have a compressor. I still use spray cans on smaller projects though.

On my jeep im thinking about going willow green as well...however i wanna keep the raised sections on my hood and my roof black (black is factory color)....and shoot the rest green. Should i sand the factory clear off the sections i wanna keep black or just mask it off? I will be using 2k clear.

      @@JamesDguy Thank you for making this video.
      I've been eyeballing your videos for a long time and never saw you use primer and wondered why. I literally JUST ordered a set of fairings for a motorcycle that I am going to be painting with my GF and was torn as to whether or not I was going to be using the primer. I may opt for not having it as the fairings are supposedly unpainted, but its nice to know WHY I may need to use primer on future projects.
      Funny enough that you posted a new video clarifying that today. Thanks!

      Derek R Yea some times I use but most times i don’t need it. The red would have turned out great had I primed first but some times you just never know and priming is always a good idea but some times I’m just looking to change the color and don’t wanna buy all the primer do the wet sanding but worth it in the end.
