I actually paint cars, quick tip after a few days wet sand (800grit) the 2k clear even and then put a thin coat of 2k clear over the car, the results will give you a professional look.
You might be able to help me. My car had a metallic paint and I got the paint mixed at a paint shop that supplies Toyota and such. The paint on the hood however came out a little dark and does not match the rest of the car. I did 4 coats with 2 cans of base. I only did the 4th coat to finish out the can. In retrospect, it wasn’t a bad idea. I heard metallic paint looks darker the more coats you have. Is this true? Also I heard metallic paint sinks. Any help with this would be great. And I used a 1k spray max clear coat and it is not shiny at all. Was only able to get the hood with 2 coats with 1 can.
I sprayed my 93 sc400 this same color. Completely agree with you, it’s a tough one to figure out but the job you did looks impeccable. Another quality content filled upload, thank you 🙏🏻
Please do a video of you wet sanding and buffing out this paint job. I would love to see it, if it’s possible. The car looks so good in that metallic blue. Probably my favorite paint job so far. Great job 👍
Great job. You inspired me to paint my dodge ram a couple months ago. I will say for my first big spray paint job turned out pretty good using your method. Keep up the great work!
I watched this video 3 times and I'm highly impressed with the outcome james 👍 and have to say look at all the like compared to the dislikes I'm sure alot of people agree with me
I used to spray paint cars also with 2k spray cans n got good results, trust me once u buy urself a compressor and a descent spray gun u won’t ever wana rattle can a car again! Thumbs up for the can work tho!
He has sprayed 2k clear that way before on his orange car. Before it was orange it was grey and he sprayed 2k clear with a pearl over it. Some people prefer different methods.
@@sinformant yeah I know , he used a cheap spray gun on that car also when he sprayed the at, I was just saying he’ll save himself a lot of work once he starts spraying with better tools
Very nice. I have been taking some of your tip, tricks and ideas and morphing them with mine. I always like bouncing ideas around to get "that" look that works for me. Thanks for the hard work. I just got done with some accent paint on black raptor Cobalt aka Project Defiant. Still have lots to finish but coming along as planned. Once again thanks for the ideas and how too's
That paint job is Amazing and makes me want to keep my 2000 Civic Hatch and Paint it bright yellow like the color of the 2019 Si Coupes. You all are certified savages. Keep up the awesome content which is very informative.
This would be great for my work truck. I think once the weather starts cooling off I’m going to try this with the black and then do a couple cans of clearcoat over it and then wet sand it. Those turbo cans are nice for the money. People seem to forget the purpose of this video. Not everyone wants a $3000 paint job. Some people just want a more presentable looking car to drive around. One decent color is better than a bunch of rust and faded paint by far.
James, you are Legend! Im a pro painter and appreciate what you are doing for the DIY people. Most people dont know the difference between grade levels of paint but that dont matter. Rustoleum has come a long way and yes it will only last if you do your part but you can say the same about any paintjob even a 4000 dollar job. Cheers!
Bro, that looks KILLER. When I did my test fender, the paint showed a purple pearl. Did you see that in this job? Man, you are a great inspiration to us DIY guys.
Keep it up buddy, nice work and thanks for the video shout out featuring my hard work as well. To all the haters throwing shade by judging or critique our craft and talent I stand by my buddy James Dguy. Creating a beautiful car aesthetic on a limited budget Is something you can do with determination and a vision of success regardless of your wallet share. I at least have the balls to show my video results to everyone, supporting Moore Motorsports and being dedicated to empowering all instead of bringing down an artist like James Dguy. Haters you can suck it, James keep on sharing your amazing results with videos like this! Allen
The Rustoleum cans say do not apply to surfaces that can reach 200 F. The hood over the engine can easily reach over 200 F in the summer (especially in Texas). Have you had any problems with the paint since applying it? My biggest concern is that the paint might catch on fire if it goes over 200 F. Thanks.
Your vids make me feel comfortable enough to spraypaint my own car. She's pretty beaten up on the exterior. Need to find a garage that I can borrow for a couple of days....
This is cool, but it’s just a waste of $ to use 30+ spray cans. Just get a gallon of cheap 2k clear, some base coat (you can use Rustoleum if you insist), and a $15 harbor freight HVLP gun. You’ll save money and have better results. Work smarter not harder, but you do have good tips and do good work 👍🏻
I did the same thing on my RX-7 FC. Nothing beats a good paint job though. Also, shoot the clear after 1 hour or so. Don't do it immediately. It won't be as reflective.
Personal opinion here: I think you could have applied clear with a spraygun and got much better results 2 coats might not be enough to wet sand that clear , should have done 3 coats. The amount spent on 2k clear in a can is pretty much the same or more than a gallon of 2k clear from amazon Try doing a control coat next time with those cans to get your metallic from looking blotchy I’ve done a combination of base sprayed with spray can and clear with a spray gun and achieved damn near body shop quality paint jobs. I think these tips could help you improve your spray can paint jobs even further. Cheers 🍻
Gallon of 2k clear is cheaper than those $20 cans and is more manageable. I did the same color with rattle can (over 20 cans) with 2k clear by finish 1 with a harbor freight turbine. The finish is on my youtube. I will never rattle can a car ever again lol. It came out great though.
See the answer for this is yes and no. Let me explain what I mean.. my small 8 gallon compressor with my wetta 5000 spray gun would have had just as much orange peel due to low tank size and the cfm also you have to make 110% sure each time you mix clear it’s mixture is perfect and im a screw up so I would screw the mixture up (ask me how I know) lol I’m better with can than a gun but I have done both methods before. Either way the results always look decent in the end.
Moore Motorsports James Dguy I have a video on mixing paint, it’s not that hard especially with mixing cups or mixing stick , but I see your point with a spray gun with low cfm however, a more even application of clear and less dry spots I think could have benefited you in the end result. Regardless I applaud your talent with your spraycans, it’s not an easy thing to do.
Hey man great job I had an ek sedan I did the same color it took 18 cans for me and I only needed four cans of the clear for the whole car. I also sprayed some clear on the wing and a repair on the door the vids in my bio but for real good job bro
I have a '99 Ford Contour, great little car that just won't die, needs paint badly but no $$$. Watched several of your videos and got the courage up to do just the spoiler/fin thing on the trunk the other day. Sanded, primed, painted, clear coated. Used all Rustoleum products. Was satisfied with everything but the actual paint itself. It was a silver metallic called Titanium Silver in the can that has the trigger instead of the button your depress like a regular can of spray paint. Wont use the trigger can again, came out of the can terrible. Anyway, long story short, the color was about a 90% match to the original color of the car, and so the spoiler/fin came out pretty good. 100% better than it did look. I will probably buy all the paint, primer and clear coat at one time, and then do a section at a time. I'm a 60 year old granny type, so auto paint is new to me. Really looking forward to making my old hooptie look better. Thank you for your videos, they're really great! You're insipring more people than you think!
This is impressive , I've use this paint before and it dries really fast, so congratulations on being able to keep the wet edge moving with the spray can's tiny fan width. I wish they sold this paint by the gallon. I would definitely spray a car with it in a hvlp gun. A nice metallic red or gun metal would also be cool colors.
i like your videos man, when i use to paint the cars my friend and I buy, we used spray cans. It was a budget thing, this was back in 2003. I no longer do this but its nice to see people still do this like you. great work man.
Great job james.thats one of my favorite colors...I sure like you to repaint my 06 accord..it's dark mettilc grey..I do live in the Houston area..I think I would trust you more then someone else
You are AMAZING, I'm about to do my vehicle and these videos give so much confidence. Thanks for some pretty budget friendly and realistic to some of our lives videos.
Love spray painting cars. My Infiniti has a 2 tone black and blue rustoleum high performance enamal job on it now, gonna redo it in this over the summer. Some think spray paint is ricey but considering maaco is charging over $3000 and i don't want a wrap like every other hood trash car i see i think spray paint is a good option. That clear coat ain't cheap though. For those who think it turned out like shit I've seen and done some shitty spray jobs and thats not bad at all. You want perfect go find a custom painter and give him $8k and call it a day.
BRO I was gonna do the same thing soon just green and then you made this video. Perfect lol. I wasn’t sure If I should use primer. I already painted my truck with rustoleum 2x using your videos as a guide. It came out great but I didn’t do the best in some places and I want to try again. Going for metallic green with 2k clear. Thanks for all your videos man glad you showed me the 2x I used it on my boat and all kinds of stuff lol. Great paint for what would otherwise require a serious paint like automotive or marine. Keep going!
Next time if your trying to lay something down and not sand try some type of sealer instead of primer. Itll give a good solid base coat and it lays out smoother than primer so itll turn out better in the long run. And another tip warming the clear up will probally cause it to dry alot quicker which will result in alot of orange peel. When clear lays down it needs time to dry its self and smooth out but with it warm may not have enuf time to do that. Just some tips man. Still looks amazing and done a great job on it. Color looks good and played out right and love the tail lights on the car too!! Nice work as always!!!
I love how y'all took off the doors and everything and got all the jams and trunk hinges etc etc .. Looks good so does your brothers mint joint . 🔥 content on the channel it made me subscribe 💯
Normal paint , less then 10 cans , metallic one full car , 20👀☑️ Checked! Wow 🤩 I like the color you must record it after sand and buff , 90% of orange will come off!
Love your video's. I am in the process of painting on old Bullnose F250 with a 6.9 idi diesel. With my time I can only work for an hour or so here and there and the weekends so your methods work perfectly for me.
I know this is a rattle job, but if you already have a compressor and get the cheap harbor freight $36 touch-up spray gun....it works miracles and saves money for the clear! The rustoleum metallic is infinitely easier to spray consistently than mixing it in clear and then spraying, at least for me. You can buy 2k clear by the 5 quarts for about $75 and it goes a long way! Shooting with the gun uses about 50cc's (about 1.5oz's) of clear for two heavy passes on a fender. For non-metallic paint it is much cheaper and easier to spray rustoleum quarts using a gun (2 spray cans equals about 8ozs mixed in a gun). I had already painted my base coat on my bass boat and ran across this metallic paint, a complete game changer!
most people won't have a compressor. or not a good enough compressor with the CFM for a paint job. heck, most people with a garage will not do this job because it can make a mess. I wouldn't. me personally I would setup a small tent and do it outside and I would use a compressor, rent one if I have to.
Man that paint job came out really nice, ive been waiting for someone to spray their car with this color from rustoleum,,kinda reminds me of si blue...but you should have wet sand and buffed it......it would look spot on shiny if wet sanded and buffed..great video..2 thumbs up👍👍
Great job buddy looks good. Can I make a suggestion when spraying with rattle can try to go in longer strokes (pause) gives a better result. Also if you had wet sanded the metallic before 2k clear there would have been less orange peel. But my opinion only you still did a phenomenal job with rattle can. Car looks awesome. 👍✌
You can't wet sand metallic, it will get splotchy as you cut through the color coat into the metal flakes (they're little solid flakes of mica in the paint), the more you cut the lighter colored it will look as you expose more and more metal flake on the surface, but it will never look even.
Ok serious question... If you already had a spray gun and compressor what would the cost difference be between buying quarts/gallons of paint and doing it yourself and this can method?
The 2K clear would have been like $50-60 but the metallic blue would have been way more out of a gun. Plus primer and I would have had to buy a bigger compressor because my wetta 5000 gun don’t do well with my small 8gallon compressor
I was thinking about painting my toyota camry. I was thinking about doing black. But I heard black is hard to paint on large scales. I'm pretty experienced with spraycans on small projects.
You do a damn good job with these man. My problem is my hand starts hurting after like 5 minutes lol. But I just painted my whole car black with the turbo cans and came out amazing!
Nice job again James. Thanks for posting. Pay no arrention to the negative comments. But, hey, they're still commenting! Keep on doing your thing. Love it, man.
This video came across my feed. I don’t know how you do it. I helped a buddy restored a car and when I spray clear I needed to be suited up due to the sticky feeling. Good looking job. BTW, I see the stickers and plates and saw you are in cove. I graduated years ago from there and am now in the Austin area. Keep up the good work.
Very nice man but if you invest in a 21 gallon compressor and a cheap spray gun from harbor freight you set for long time and since your not spraying big cars it’s gonna work good for you
This color is super hard to spray. I did the same and it took over 20 cans with my ek hatch. Then I did finish 1 clear coat over the top with a hvlp turbine sprayer. Video on my profile of the finish. It actually came out great. But I'd never ever spray a metallic out the can ever again. It's extremely difficult to keep a constant flow on the metallic.
Hey man I live in temple I have already painted my bumper on my 05 mustang and it didn’t really turn out the way I wanted. I was wondering if you would like to give it a shot at the whole car. Could make some good content for your channel and I would pay for supplies. Just let me know. You do some good work man keep it up👍🏼

I wouldn't. me personally I would setup a small tent and do it outside and I would use a compressor, rent one if I have to.
After 2 years how is this paint job holding up??
I used your methods on a fender i got from the junkyard for my truck. Thanks for the info
Man that paint job came out really nice, ive been waiting for someone to spray their car with this color from rustoleum,,kinda reminds me of si blue...but you should have wet sand and buffed it......it would look spot on shiny if wet sanded and buffed..great video..2 thumbs up👍👍
That's a dope color!
@@JamesDguy What about using a small gun to shoot the clear on the bumpers, so you could add a flexing agent?
Very good. 2000 grit wet sand n buff 👍🏻
Job well done, its a lot of work doing all that but its worth it. Waiting to see the next vid for wet sanding and buffs 👍🏽
I was thinking about painting my toyota camry. I was thinking about doing black. But I heard black is hard to paint on large scales. I'm pretty experienced with spraycans on small projects.
Black seems to be easier to shoot than this metallic was. Temperature is key though. The cooler it is the nicer the black lays down for me
You do a damn good job with these man.
Looking forward to see the wet sanding stage.
You killed it bro! Another banger!
Man, that looks really good, like wow
So Ik you work with rustoleum have you tired the color shift or anything if not I think it would be a cool video to see how it looks and holds up
Very nice man but if you invest in a 21 gallon compressor and a cheap spray gun from harbor freight you set for long time and since your not spraying big cars it’s gonna work good for you
This color is super hard to spray.
Yes exactly!!
Use an electric blanket for consistent heat. No need to stop your progress by warming up water for your bucket.
Looks awesome! How did u have not any problems with overspray and stripes
Temperature being cooler helps you keep the panel wet longer which allows for less stripes and doing multiple coats helps too.
Hey man I live in temple I have already painted my bumper on my 05 mustang and it didn’t really turn out the way I wanted. I was wondering if you would like to give it a shot at the whole car. Could make some good content for your channel and I would pay for supplies. Just let me know. You do some good work man keep it up👍🏼
I’m not doing it full time for people I’m just taking on smaller projects. He is active in the military and we worked something out and felt I needed to help do my part. I’m always open to doing work just right now I’m backed up
@@JamesDguy no problem, I know how much work it is and I’ve been doing all the sanding and body work that needs to be done. Just thought I would see what you thought on the subject. And like I said I’m in Temple so if you ever need a new video let me know michaelpetzold12@gmail.com
Oh man. You have to do a video of y’all wet sanding. Man it will look amazing!!
Hi. Great Video. What was the Final Cost to Paint it?
Yes I love that blue metallic blue you did a great job
Game changer looks awesome bro
Hello Sir I would Recommend you buy A1 Rust-O-Dapt Adapters and Art Primo Male Fan Caps. They give a Much larger Fan Spray Pattern Similar to Spray Guns. They Are very cheap online and easy to Clean. It make painting with Rustoleum Cans 10x easier and Better Looking.Worth a Look at
Love the work man just that I can't get the paints u get where I live I'm in the Caribbean
Nice job. But how did you decide when to change cans before the spray can starts to spit?
That is awesome. It looks like it came that way.
I dig the idea but the cost is prohibitive vs conventional gun applied paint IMO
Great job !!!the damn near best paint job! I seen spray can, on the internet considering I seen a whole lot of videos!!!
Mean video.! Love the Mettalic Blue.
Hi, the car looks awesome considering you're using a can paint. Those metalic colors are not easy deal with. Better than macco and cheapper than a work shop.
I love your vids! Only thing bother me is that you should do the bondo before to paint. It would take a bit more time but you would end up saving time over redoing it in futur no? continue your vids the projects are great I like it if I had an older car I would try for sure! probably the raptor on my suv
I did my whole truck with the same paint. Isn’t that a cobolt blue. I took the paint out and used a Wagner sprayer to do my truck though. And sprayed a 2 part clear. It came out great.
Great job looks really good bro. Im definitely going to get at my 98 civic ill make video how can I send it to you. Keep them videos coming.
