What are your thoughts on sponge filters?

I never used to run sponge filters but since building a fish room I have completely changed over out of necessity. With an inverter and a car battery I can keep the fish room running for days if the power goes out!
Good tip on putting sponges in the box filter. I chose sponges for my fish room.
I run all sponge filters and my tanks stay looking great
I have them in every tank but not as my primary filtration.
Yep. Love them.
This is definitely my favorite filter and topic!
I like the Easy Flow Sponge Filters with the uplift tubes from Aquarium Co Op, but even when I try to bag the filters to remove them for cleaning and maintenance it makes a huge mess all over the tank.
slow is smooth and smooth is fast
@@SteenfottAquatics Thank you. I'll keep that in mind
Great video absolutely right about the aquarium co-op sponge filters I run them in all my tanks as well. Also so glad they came out with the uplift kit and put that on all of them as well. For my money they are absolutely the best sponge filters on the market.
Keep it up! 🎉
Going away from Sponge filters, have numerous coop ones, but an addition hang on back with just filter floss does a much better job of cleaning the water in my opinion.

Too fix the gurgling on regular sponge filters, use the LRB yogurt cup lid method. Works a charm 👌
The bad thing about sponge filters especially the course ones is that you have to use a bag when pulling it out haha but I never do that .Im going more and more with plants as filters But at the same time I like to see what different filtration methods work best and box filters don't need a bag when pulling them out.Thats the cool thing about this hobby is the variety of methods.
I always pull my out before gravel vac. The only downside is it’s harder to hide and you have to consider when you pull it out but my experience is sponge filters are 90% efficiency in all situations and only 10% worry/inconvenience.
@@Dragontardigrade I Agree and do the same Dragontardigrade sponge filters are a great way especially if you have MTS.But I've really been liking the plants as filters.
I mean if you are going to run a sponge filter, why not just get an internal filter. You can get a mechanical + bio, with surface agitation and best thing is you don't have to deal with that air bubble noise + air pump noise.
Internals cost more up front and usually to run too, also the sponge filter does both mechanical and bio as well and generally safer for young fish. A great thing for them to graze on too. I’ve never owned an internal canister filter to be fair, but I also can’t see myself spending the money on one without the itch to just get a hob for the same price and 3x the capacity, while also being outside the tank.
Because internal filters break way faster. Sand dose not ever ever mix well with internal filters.
I started with a great internal canister filter.. after a while, I even added a second for more water flow and more filtration.
I switched to a sponge and it’s been doing a much better job than both canister filters were doing.
I like the sponge.
I am a believer! Aquarium Co Op Sponge Filter, Air Pump, and light all the way!
I use the hygger dual sponge filter, but I definitely wish the sponges were more coarse like the aquarium co op one!
i use one too, but i dont think it is the right size for my tank (i got a 38 gal tank)
Will a bigger spong make more noise?
Not really, the noise comes from how much air is being pushed through.
At the Fott Spot!
This seemed more like an advertisement for the coop filters...
However it seems, one is clearly better than the other.
Lost me at 'put a bag around it' ☹️
How often do you clean them? Just rinse in water I'm guessing
NO! Squeeze the sponge in some dechlorinated water and never rinse in regular chlorinated water bc it will kill all the beneficial bacteria on the sponge
How often depends on how many fish you have. The more you have the more often you'll have to clean it. In a lightly stocked tank you could go months without having to clean it.
@@michaelboulos3272 what about well water? I do have a water softener with a brine tank. Should i be concerned about the salt content of my tap water?
