As someone thats considered obese (well according to bmi, im still fat rho but my body fat according to the army body fat calculator im abt 28% which is considered overweight not obese. But still) I condone this response, my dad is obese and he unfortunately doesn't seem to consider if he should lose weight.
Those who use 'phobia' in the context similar to the one in the quiz apparently think of disapproval as of unreasonable aversion if it's directed at them. I feel that's the essence. You would tell them about the difference in meaning and they would still be like 'they are the same picture '.
The fat liberation movement does so much damage. My uncle was part of it and was morbidly obese which caused him to be immobile and rely on a breathing tube in order to live. Whenever someone in the family tried to talk to him about his health, he just got angry and called them “fat-phobic.” He ended up dying at the age of 39, leaving his daughter (whose mother died from cancer years earlier) with no parents.
I’m fat and don’t find her fat phobic. She’s right, I’ve recently started working out, and going on walks. I drink water now instead of pop. Enough is enough. Being fat shouldn’t be glorified. Being healthy should be glorified.
Same here, I started a diet almost 2 months ago and I’ve lost over 13 lb, I was way out of my ideal weight, I even got to obesity type I based on the BMI, and I’m doing my best to get to my ideal weight
MY BRO DIED because he was obese. My sister, who was also obese, was in complete shock. They avoided and rejected any and all help. The one doctor who attempted to help was banned. They remained wilfully blind to the progressive weight gain and huge health problems that compounded everything. They thought the doctors and meds would solve all of the problems. Until his heart stopped in the hospital and nobody could revive him. At that point, my sister suddenly open to all of my suggestions for weight loss and the gym and a completely new lifestyle. Her life is now great in every way, except she's a widow now. All because of the denial of reality. He was a really great guy... We miss him very much.
great I guess were assigning fat bodies along with genders now too lol. This entire movement is rooted in ignorance. How stupid people can get is comical atp. Also see obligatory Dwight Schrute reference lol.
I am proudly and gladly "fatphobic" if it means wanting to be healthy and not be fat, because being thin is much more comfortable and you will really feel better. I am afraid of getting unhealthy yes, and I'm repulsed from fat, but it's not a phobia. We don't have to adapt to these people !!!
The heaviest I got was 220 pounds, I now have heart issues, and high blood pressure. I am now down to 175 and losing. Being fat isn't great, and it causess many health issues. I'm 28 and was super close to a heart attack. I also have Hypothyroid, and it's not an excuse for not losing weight. I can't do intense work outs because I have bad asthma, but change I changed my diet, watched my salt, drank a lots of water, and do 20 minutes walk a day. I lost 20 pounds in the first month. So, to anyone suffering, I know it can be discouraging, but you got this! The first initial week is the hardest, but once you get through it, it's a lot easier. Do what's best for your health, you will feel better in the long run, and don't wait like me and get all these health issues. :,)
I started keto two months ago. I’m 49 and was gaining weight due to menopause. And in this brief time, I’ve lost 25 pounds, gone from size 14/16 to a healthy 8/10, and have more energy than ever. I’m feeling great! Down from 160 lbs to 135 lbs. You’re a-right I’m “fat phobic!”
It's not even about the gluttony, the "you're fat because you have no self control". Or "fat looks ugly" judgement.. Any of that... Its the genuine concern for public health, and the fact that we're ALL paying way too much for health insurance due to this obesity epidemic.
Especially when they were trying to force people to get the c19 jab because they're "immunocompromised" because of their obesity (I'm not kidding I've had people say this to me, they legit told ME to get jabbed for THEM or to keep wearing masks because THEY are FAT... Not like cancer or anything.) and they also made a push for unjabbed people to not get insurance coverage or even access to grocery stores in some areas (needing a jab card, happened in my state.)
People need to take care of their health….I went from 222 lbs to 190 lbs. I am not being “fatphobic”. I am being health focused Misha. Nobody wants anyone dying of obesity or living with high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. I want to stay healthy and happy.
I spent my childhood and early adult life underweight for my frame. Supercharged metabolism due to internalized stress is nasty to deal with. I ate almost nonstop. I was constantly accused of having a hollow leg by people who knew me well. I always felt like crud, and my immune system was a train-wreck. The snide comments I got, almost always from other women, included accusations about me having an eating disorder or starving myself. I guess I missed out since I never thought to accuse EVERYONE of being "thinphobic" because of the ignorance and stupidity of a few jerks. Dang! LOL Seriously, though, I never believed I was "oppressed" because of a few idiots. I just looked at them as idiots. Maturity helped me see that most of whom were probably jealous of the fact I could eat anything I wanted without gaining weight. They were totally ignorant of the fact that being underweight comes with health issues just like obesity does. Thankfully those days are past. But I still don't think people are "phobic" of all this stuff. If anything, I'm probably the "thinphobic" one, since I NEVER want to go back to being underweight like that again anymore than I want to be obese.
Misha, I'd love to see you do a video on the woke nonbinary Russians who are breaking the grammatical structure of the language, demanding to be referred to as plural они instead of something that would make sense like оно. It's confusing enough for me, learning the language, but my normal Russian friends make it sound like it's even more confusing for native speakers.
My native language is also slavic, Serbian, and I speak Russian too. But alterations like this aren't a thing here (yet), and I studied Russian before they appeared in it, so I've always wondered how such a thing would even work in languages like mine, where 'they' is never used for one person. In Serbian, it would sound very strange, maybe like an old-fashioned wat to show respect (like 'vous' instead of 'toi' in French), but in third person very odd nowadays. We also have genders for 'they' depending on whether it's a group of males, females or both, unlike Russians. Like them, we have genders for verbs and adjectives as well, so saying 'the famous actor decided to go by they' requires masculine or feminine gender three times. I have no clue how we'd talk gender neutrally in either language. So I'd love to see the video too.
Yea, as a russian - this is so stupid! In English there was a singular they since Shakespeare when talking about an unknown person, but in Russian it just DOESN'T MAKE SENSE 😩😩😩
As a trans Canadian, I can’t stand the teenage social media addicts going country to country trying to screw everything up just to make themselves feel special. There is no 3rd gender and there will never be.
My mother was obese for most of my childhood so I can relate. Luckily, about 7 years ago she finally got serious about her health and lost a lot of weight and I’m really happy for her and proud of her now!
@@Beautifulpurpleskies yes way to go to your mother. I am happy to hear; she knows what to do to spend more time with her family and did it. most of the media today doesn’t want us to hear about these awesome news and it is sad.
@@DianaMayeDesignsPoint out where they said they didn't love their parents? Do you have any reading comprehension at all? Being obese isn't just appearance, it significantly affects physical ability, mental health, and obviously the health of the individual. It also affects relationships and finance because it takes a lot of food to maintain the weight and makes working much harder. There is literally no benefit to being obese.
My nephew, who weighed about 300 lbs, died a year ago at the age of 60. He had 80% blockage in all his arteries and didn't make it to surgery once he was in the hospital. One of the nicest people I knew. Kind to others but not to himself. My niece, his wife, has also been seriously overweight all her life. At the age of 62 she is walking now with a walker. I am assuming it's because of the damage to her joints from the excess weight she has carried all her life. Everyone's health deteriorates as we get older but the toll obesity perpetrates on the body should not be celebrates or excused.
It would be helpful if they'd stop putting so much additives in our food. Or making the "good for you food" so expensive you have to go with the cheaper brands and foods just to survive.
Instead of using phobic we should start using "averse". What is averse? Averse is: adj. Having a feeling of opposition, distaste, or aversion; strongly disinclined. -Fatphobic- FATAVERSE
Airplane seats are designed for very average people. Being fat is not a huge issue in them unless you're crazy fat, but being even slightly tall (like 6 ft, nothing crazy) can be a huge problem and being truly tall is a nightmare.
My husband is 6'4" and hates to fly. He's convinced airline seats are designed for people 5' tall. LOL I guess he should complain that airlines are bigoted against tall people. I have a nephew who is 6'7" who hates to fly even more than my husband does.
@@dawnt6791 they really are ok for people who are like 5' 9" or shorter; I have seen many many people who are shorter be completely comfortable. The hard part is there's just no wiggle room at all on that; once you're above the max it is absolutely terrible and only gets worse and worse. At least with fatness if you can not only make adjustments to one side or the other and/or "hodl yourself in" a bit, but you can also be seated next to someone who isn't fat and, thereby, both have at least some room. If you're too tall it doesn't matter if every single other person on the plane is plenty short, you still won't fit. You can't shrink your femurs, and the only seat adjustment available at all is the person in front of you leaning back and shrinking your leg space (generally only be an inch or less; the lean back is mostly only upper body). Leaning your set back doesn't help your legs at all.
True, but that's a problem of chairs being too close back to front...there definitely used to be more leg room and I think most people would support that. The chairs don't need to be wider though for fat people.
As someone who was skinny/extremely underweight as a teen, I was told that I need to eat hamburgers once. I was also asked if I was anorexic by a classmate in Jr. High!
im gonna become 18 in about a year and im 5’6 and weigh roughly 103-105 pounds. im genuinely gonna game over myself if someone came up to me and told me i looked 12 the day i become 18. it’s such a struggle for petite women like us honestly
They've discovered the power and social leverage they gain from victimhood - So they are now constantly scanning for any opportunity or loophole they can find in everyday interactions, to jump into the victim wagon for a free ride.
My niece showed up to my home some time ago a whole 30lbs heavier within a few months time span . My mother and I were worried. So I asked her, " Are you preggo?" She got so angry at me and said I was NOT being a good aunt because I see her as fat! I was confused 😕,concerned, and shocked by her interpretation of a genuine concern about her health
Ok in fairness, being fat is a mental issue, so she already in distress, then add body standards for women being much more important than mens, so shes insecure too, and when she meets her beloved family for the first time in months, shes met with ‘are you pregnant?’ due to how big she is
@@adamsfamilybaseball2929 Yeah 30lbs in a couple month is probably issue, there's probably some lack of self control, and mental illness could factor into her eating more than one should
If you get her to talk to you again, have her get her thyroid checked. Thyroid disorders can cause a lot of weight gain. I had thyroid cancer and dealt with weight issues my whole adult life (from 1999 on), it was all in regards to my thyroid. She could also have pcos. It's not normal to gain 30lbs in a few months. That's 15 lbs per month. You should be concerned. You shouldn't be hurtful about it though. Asking her if she's "preggo" was probably hurtful. Instead just ask her if she's feeling okay and what's changed.
Ive been FAT all my life. I was born with Bilateral Club Feet and had surgeries from the time i was 2 weeks old until i was 13 years old, so my physical activity was limited. Also both my parents were Fat. I accept that I need to lose weight for my health. My 59th birthday is coming up in a few weeks.and after double hip replacement and and infection in the second hip that had to be done thrice. I'm 6' 3" tall and weigh in at about 320 lbs. My only issue I have is the assumption that all i need to do is not a a second SANDWICH and ill lose weight sorry its not true for me. I don't eat that second sandwich. IMO more people that are FAT had other issues the contributed to their Fatness. just something to think about... Have a Fantastic Day!!!
I don't understand how fat people are so comfortable being fat in terms of just movement alone. I was skinny most of my life. Spent my 20s around 150-160 at my heaviest if i was eating alot of fast food during my office job days. Since i hit 30 and I was working at Cracker Barrel, my metabolism slowed way down and I started getting a Gut. During 2020 Lockdown, i got pretty heavy and noticed my own lack of movement ability just in terms of turning my own body. After being out of work for a bit and just being a cashier now, instead of a server or other activity-heavy jobs, i'm around 195. I'm starting a regimen now bc i'm 37 and don't want it to continue creeping in on me.
man I had to actively try to gain weight for like 3 years to put on about 30 pounds; the amount of food one has to eat to get that huge is mind boggling
I feel the same but feel bad saying it out loud because if anyone sees me complaining about it being hard to gain weight they insult me and brush me off because “skinny people are the standard and dont have problems.” It’s just disheartening to know that body positivity is only reserved for fat people and fat people are the only people with weight problems I guess..
Its not about amount, but about calories. If you eat calorie dense food it is not that hard to gain weight, especially if this is not really nutritioning food and your body craves more food to fullfil its makro needs
@@justine2695 Nah, I think gaining weight is easier because it doesn't require active effort. You can easly increase your calorie intake pretty effortlessly by drinking nutridrink for example
After my cousin started college, she became woke and joined this movement. Every time I see her she looks she has gained more weight, and whenever we try to say to her we are worried about her health, she just blows up and calls us fatphobic bigots. I was watching a game show from the 1970s and pretty much everyone was skinny, aside from a few mildly overweight or “chubby” people. Now, whenever I go out in public, like 80% of the people I see are overweight in some degree. This movement is dangerous and is a big contributing factor to the obesity crisis.
To me, the saddest part is that many of them have bought into the "fat is healthy" lie. They can't see that they are shortening their lifespans by their choices.
Interesting side note: Practicing self-restraint & discipline has been shown to strengthen the inhibitive pathways in your brain. Which in turn makes it easier for your brain to break destructive cycles like bad habits & depressive / intrusive thoughts. It's no wonder that many of these groups are also riddled with mental health problems.
Im fat, and yes I am trying to lose weight. I dont think im an ugly slob, but I understand that im not going to be as attractive as someone who is fit because unhealthiness is not attractive.
My dad died a few years ago from heart & liver complications due to obesity (~450lbs), all issues which were completely avoidable through lifestyle. We were very close and I miss him a lot. I used to be liberal and this is one of the (many) reasons I am not anymore, because I can't stand idly by while the left preaches "body positivity" in spite of the fact people are dying from this lifestyle in record numbers. There is nothing positive about the fact that my dad died younger than he should have and we can no longer laugh together. Food can become an addiction just like alcohol and any drug - these same kind of groups would say you shouldn't have an intervention with someone close to you hooked on heroin or ruining their life with alcohol because that would be "shaming" and "oppressive" 🤦♂
8:10 i completely agree with your statement because people who truly care about you , like you said, WILL tell you what's wrong and help you; but people who don't are literally encouraging you to d!e and keep worsening your mental health. and all of that because they don't want to be called "fatphobic". Think about that for a second: not helping your loved ones in fear of being called "fatphobic"... it sounds so egoistic and surreal to me.
Exactly. It's just as harmful as if you took someone who was struggling with anorexia or bulimia and supporting their delusion that "you're fat". That's not love.
One of the doctors I used to work with for a medical group used to always ask his very obese patients a funny question: "Have you ever seen an obese skeleton or elderly person (70+)?"
by their definition normal people are fatphobic but for crazy people, everyone else is crazy. So do you take them seriously? The best thing to do is let their addiction do copious amounts of harm to them or their relatives to let them know that their addiction isn't right. Obesity is caused by an addiction to food. I have been hustled by people I know like a family member to pay for weed and I know how insistent/manipulative some people can be to feed their addiction. Not anymore.
Addiction to food is one cause. Another cause is medical conditions like thyroid disorders and medication. Some medication can pack on the weight. Like Prednisone. I had a doctor prescribe that to me for three months straight when I was going through an asthma issue. I gained 70lbs in two months. I lost that weight over a two year period and kept it off for another four years, but then I gained it right back when my doctor took me off a medicine controlling my cancer. She didn't believe I needed it. Six months later, I was so big and my thyroid was lumpy with 11 nodules. six months after that I was having surgery and radiation therapy. So, obesity is not just an addiction to food. That is one aspect for some people, but there are other reasons too.
@@DianaMayeDesigns most people who are fat or even obese don't suffer from the conditions that "make them" gain weight. And even if they do, a lot of them get that illness BECAUSE they are fat. Before you say anything like "oh you wouldn't know" or "who are you to say" I speak from experience, I was nearly obese, if not obese in my early teens. And I got sick super easily. Not anymore. Also, the thyroid problem you mentioned usually results in a small increase of 5-15 ish pounds. And only in super rare cases does it result in heavy weight gain due to the illness being severe. Additionally, you just can't gain weight randomly. You need to be inputting more calories than you are burning for you to gain weight. Moreover, the medicine doesn't increase your weight, in the end you do. The medicine might make you hungrier which leads you to eat more. Logically, you're at fault tho it's tough to blame you since it is a side effect and you don't intentionally do it but you have to understand that you're doing it. Also, food is used as a coping mechanism for trauma, as a self harm tactic (since eating too much can lead you to feeling bloated and unwell) and stress. These are further reasons for food addiction, they don't excuse food addiction but make it easy to understand WHY people might do it. The most important thing to do at that point is to start a healthy weight loss program and get therapy to improve your mental health as I've yet to see a fat person who's mentally well. In the end being fat is a choice, one that, like most addicts, people don't want to make but do so in the end anyway.
@@kaiserfakinaway5909 Thyroid issues can result in a massive weight gain. Show me you don't know what you're talking about without actually saying it. LOL Jesus, you people...
@@DianaMayeDesigns I did say that massive weight gain IS possible, but only with severe cases, I did make the mistake of not clarifying that it's mostly WATER WEIGHT, which is NOT the same as fat, afaik fat is tougher to get rid of because our body naturally wants to store energy cus "what if we need it later if we starve?", ancient monke brain stuff. You didn't read the whole thing or try to understand MY point of view, I did try to get your point of view but just cus I don't agree with you, I'm a joke or something? I really got a bit woke up when I saw those crazy obese people. Because sometimes I've heard a bit that "I'm a bit fat. Eat too much candy. Should exercise more". But I'm nowhere near those people. I think the one problem is that, if you're just "chubby" I think that is pretty much fine, maybe it could benefit in loosing weight. But if you're that obese, that's just purely bad. The only prolbem with "fatphobia" I think is when you shame and try to make people who are pretty healthy to loose weight and become really (and unhealthy) skinny. If you're trying to make obese people loose weight, that I'd not call some "fatphobia", because it's just acknowledging a problem and trying to help. So it's really the extremes in skinny and fat that are the real problem. However I think you should be aware of how you talk to people about these issues as some might already have had other people talking to them about it, and it could be a mental nuisance to then remind people once again that they should take care about their health.
Here's a question: Your family member chain smokes and insists on doing so in your home. Their doctor tells them they are already showing signs of lung disease and COPD. Do you: a) Accept their behaviour and ignore the cancer-causing issue b) Tell them they are free to do as they wish regardless of the consequences and encourage them to smoke more by buying them cigarettes c) Tell them they are not welcome in your home or company while they are making the choice to smoke because it will eventually kill them prematurely? Or this question: Your family member drinks alcohol frequently. Their doctor tells them they are already showing early signs of liver damage. Do you: a) Accept their behaviour and ignore the liver failure issue b) Tell them they are free to do as they wish regardless of the consequences and encourage them to drink by buying them alcohol c) Tell them they are not welcome in your home or company while they are making the choice to drink alcohol because it will eventually kill them prematurely? What is the difference between those questions and the situation of a person who CHOOSES to overeat? Obesity is a CHOICE. We KNOW it's a choice because some people CHOOSE not to overeat and remain a healthy weight, balanced for their height. I don't "fear" being obese because it's a CHOICE I am not going to make. I CHOOSE health, activity, balanced diet, feeling well, looking attractive, travelling comfortably, breathing silently, moving freely without a walker or electric scooter. That's NOT 'fatphobic'; that's preferring good health for myself.
@@stephendiggines9122 What is "weird" about the options? They are the three choices one is faced with if a family member is making such self-destructive choices; accept, support, reject. What would you suggest?
You aren't even addressing the problem, your addressing a symptom of a problem and you are giving 1 option not 3. To summarize your responses A) ignore B) ignore C) ignore and get rid Maybe support a loved one, pretty wild and unpopular idea I know but give it a try sometime
@@stephendiggines9122You cannot help someone that doesn't want to help themselves. That said these options are usually after you have done everything you can think of to try and help them but the diagnosis on major damage to their organs after everything you did failed is too much for you. Some people need to hit rock bottom and some people have good intentions but can't think of a better way to hit rock bottom Also saying an ultimatum like the 3rd usually is just something you say in the moment you might not mean it. Most people can't handle a drug addict family member, smoking with already major lung DMG is the same. Food addiction is less severe but being with someone who is mentally dependent on food that by is slowly killing them is too much for some and others have no clue what to do.
As a medical student, I get that someone with the flu wouldn't find obesity something important for the diagnosis, but fat doesn't just acumulate on your waste, it is also on the veins including the veins on your lungs, so losing weight would help with the flu symptoms. Being overweight impacts hundreds of different areas of the body, including things that doesn't seems like it does. When the doctors tell you that losing weight will help, they are looking at the 6 years of studying how obesity afects your body, 99 out 100 is not fatphobia. If your doctor doesn't say anything, s/he is a bad doctor, who is chosing "political correct" over the helth of the patient
thank you for bringing up what not to say to someone underweight at 7:40. I’ve been underweight my entire life and it’s been a huge struggle physically and mentally. it’s not any healthier than being obese. i have seen so many people online talk about “skinny privilege” and essentially how someone like me could never experience anything negative because of my weight. i’ve had numerous people in person comment on my weight, my eating habits, etc. its frustrating and what makes it even more frustrating is how a majority of these “body positive” or “body inclusive” people don’t actually believe in body positivity if it involves someone who isn’t obese. it’s nice to hear someone i guess mention this cause i don’t hear it brought up often. thank you for shedding a bit of light on the other perspective.
I have a pretty heavy history of heart disease (not related to my weight but my point still stands) and the simple thought of doing that to yourself MORTIFIES me. those people usually don't have health issues before becoming fat and are thus wasting away their body meanwhile some of us are born with those issues. and doing that to kids is EVEN WORSE. I'm glad my parents aren't like that. otherwise I would be dead or in a coma by now. how could someone subject themselves or even worse their CHILD to this?
11:45 From the time my daughter could eat full meals, she would get sweets once a day, after dinner, IF she had eaten all of her meat and veggies (starches weren't mandatory). If she didn't want to eat something on her plate, that was absolutely fine, it just meant no dessert. So she got to decide for herself if the veggies were worth it or not. It made it REALLY easy to tell which foods were actually disgusting to her. We also had "party rules" which meant she could eat as much sweets as she wanted, but AFTER having something healthy, and 1 soda max. I feel like that was a really good way to encourage healthy eating, without vilifying sweets. They were a special treat that one earns by making good choices. She is 15 now, and is entirely in charge of her own diet. I make a healthy dinner every night, but breakfast and lunch are up to her. She instinctively eats balanced meals and sweets in moderation, because I made reasonable rules with enough leeway that she didn't feel the need to rebel. Granted, she's a level-headed responsible kid in general, I'm sure other kids will require more policing. But I couldn't be happier with the way she views food. It is first and foremost nourishment, THEN enjoyment.
My mom raised me in a similar fashion. No dessert unless the plate is clean (unless friends were over), and sugar in moderation. If I did sports, I would get sweets as a reward. I was taught that if I wanted to be able to eat something high-energy, I would have to work for it. Sure, I like sugar, but I also enjoy exercise. We’re allowed to eat fruit/veg whenever we want, because she trusts us not to overeat. Teaching kids to balance their own diets is important.
People argue that it is not our business what others are doing no with their own lives. If they wish to gain excessive wait, so be it. I can’t help but agree because at the end of the day, it is their own choice to do that to themselves. Besides, we don’t know if they are that way because of mental health issues or not or if they are trying to lose weight. However, it becomes a problem when these people start claiming that they are normal or that there is nothing wrong with their actions, or worse, that their life style is positive. Then it becomes our business to criticize. This also goes for people who are trying to be too thin. On that note, because people come naturally in different degrees of thinness or thickness, it is wrong to proclaim that your body size is the standard to achieve.
I won't deny, that after being heavily underweight, now I am overweight, and I hate it just as much as being underweight. People refuse to realize we need to try to be at an appropriately balanced weight for our bodies. It has to do with health. I also hate doctors who claim it's fine to be fat when there's clearly too much evidence pointing otherwise. Reminds me of the doctors who approve of mutilating children. Edit: I voted for all the seats in the plane to be made bigger even if it's more expensive simply because it's more comfy to sleep in. I can't stay awake in planes because I get migraines.
How much do you have to hate your child to allow them to drive themselves to a chronic disease for which they'll be on medication their whole lives? Do you think the child will be happily taking medication every day to stay alive because you were so "loving" you let them eat whatever they wanted. And yeah, like kids are going to choose healthy food over sweets and treats. It's our responsibility as parents to make sure they're well fed and not over controlled but having just what their body needs and the body doesn't tell you to give it a kilo of sweets daily, that's just the childish part of you that doesn't know there are consequences to decisions. Health is the most important thing you have, if you lose it that's it. And do you really want to tell me you believe that a person who loves you wants to see you be fat, struggling to breathe and walk and do stuff and how uncomfortable is it to walk around with fat rolls and chaffing skin. No one who truly loves you will encourage you to live like this and possibly die early, if you're fat you're fat regardless of the cause and you should get help and get healthy and live a long healthy life
A phobia is an irrational fear of something. Being slightly nervous on a flight but saying you have aerophobia is usually to claim a disability you do not have to garner sympathy from others. Passing out upon touching the door to the plane or screaming in terror as you run back up the jetway is a valid phobia. Many phobias are the result of perceived trauma, directly experienced or not. But disagreeing with someone else's beliefs does not make you phobic. People misuse the term and thus cheapen its meaning. The word loses its power. E.g. When I hear someone say, "She was screaming at me" when the person was merely disagreeing in a rather stern voice, is something that I personally loathe, as I think, "Then you don't know what screaming truly is." The...overreaction...of people to any stimulus that is less than perfectly comfortable to them causes them to use these hyperbolic statement, thereby confusing others who might wish to understand or assist them.
Whats the best part of my "phobia"? Hiking mountains, running, better mental health, healthy joints, good circulation, better relations with the physical world in every aspect.....to name a few
Telling people that they are fat phobic is exactly like saying that they are smoker phobic. You are not allowed to smoke everywhere and it's also killing you.
YES!!!!!!!! (as a healthcare tech of over 30+ yrs that has taken care of OBESE pts) Care: (imagine doing these on a person of 300-500 lbs with disabilities...... 1. Pulling them up in bed 2. Lifting them from bed to wheelchair to toliet 3. Cleaning them on the toilet or changing an adult diaper in bed 4. Bathing 5. Dressing
It was actually quite a shock to me to find out that once people reach a certain point they can't even wipe their own butts anymore. I just hadn't ever thought about it, and now I can't help wondering, why would they WANT to be dependent on another person for that level of care? I'm not even hugely independent and find that idea abhorrent. It's hard enough for elderly people who reach the point of needing that sort of care because of the effects of aging or when someone is disabled through no fault of their own and need help. For someone to CHOOSE that, though? I kind of get that some people crave the attention, but that's seriously extreme.
@dawnt6791 every sin in the Bible has a consequence. Gluttony & Sloth included. I have seen obese patients wrap toliet tissue around "long reach" salad tongs to get to their under parts. Old fashioned metal bed pans because the plastic ones break.
I do have history of an eating disorder and probably am ~fatphobic~ as in irrationally afraid of being fat. But I try to be rational about it, especially now that I'm a mother, as I grew up with morbidly obese mom and her self hatred and unhealthy relationship with food has directly influenced me too. And loving someone who's destroying themselves with food is a lot like loving a drug addict or an alcoholic person - painful. I'm afraid my kids will lose their grandma before they're grown up (and my kids are 2 year old & a baby due in few weeks, my mom in her mid 50s - I shouldn't have to worry about this at all😥). Wanting yourself and those u love to live as long and healthy and happy as possible is not fatphobic, it's totally natural and loving way to think.
Great video Misha! I would be remiss not to say, the color of your shirt today, that Robin Egg Turquoise, is the exact shade of your eyes, and made it so hard to look away from you! I guess I just gotta say Hi Barbie! You got me casually enchanted on a Saturday morning 😂
"If you're the actual size of the aircraft, you should not be flying." That's awesome. I'm not scared of fat people, but I do think that they do tend to be lazy and lack self control in most cases. Also fat people who lose weight tend to be way more attractive.
I LOVE drinking. It’s my favorite thing in the world. If I could, I would drink from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to sleep. But guess what, I don’t do that because I’m terrified of the consequences.. not sure why being afraid of being fat is any different
Misha fatphobic? What are you people talking about?? She is just truly honestly confused why you don’t care for yourself? Why be fat when you can be healthy and happy as fit individual?
I lost weight a few years ago but due to stresses in life and depression during the pandemic I’ve put all of it back on, I hate that I’m overweight and yet can’t stop stress eating nasty junk food and snacks, I’m trying to stop myself from doing all this but it’s proving such a struggle, but I hate seeing these people saying it’s all good and healthy because I hate being this size
As an overweight person, I completely agree with your thoughts! My weight is from both genetics, what I eat and tendency to sit around and not exercise. Normalizing healthy exercise and eating habits is much better!
I had my health scare from obesity a year ago. In that time, I lost 60 lbs. Now, I want to warn anyone I see when they eat something that isn’t healthy. Woth that said, I enjoy an occasional treat and I allow myself to eat bread in a sandwich sometimes. Usually the healthy foods taste better anyways.
Speaking as someone who has faced comments from people telling me I'm too fat to live or telling me that I should be ashamed of being fat. These are comments I get a lot. I have medical issues that made me fat, not the other way around. It started with cancer and moved on to other conditions I developed after I was declared "cancer free"... Things like some of those clips are humiliating. Unless you have been there and experienced what we experience, you really don't understand. Some of what you said is true, others is not. Fatphobia is not just a "phobia of fat people." It's bias towards the obese. Doctors are one thing, but even then they can be biased by attributing every medical issue to obesity. That's how I almost died because my doctor didn't listen to me when I told her something was wrong and she wouldn't send me to a specialist until she felt all the nodules in my neck. Random strangers are a whole other matter. When "you" go up to a stranger and say "you don't need that" when they are walking down the cookie isle to get to the dairy isle because it is the only isle clear on a busy day. Or "you" tell someone online they should die because they are fat. That is fatphobic. I follow a woman on FB who is inspiring. She shows videos of herself exercising or her grocery haul and even though she is trying and showing it and sharing her journey and trying to be healthier, she still gets horrible messages about how "fat" she is and how "fat shouldn't be normalized". That is fatphobic. What is not fatphobic is having a discussion with a loved one about eating better or putting yourself on a diet to be healthier. Or the whole family going for a walk. But constantly bringing up a loved one's weight is exhausting and mentally damaging to your loved one. I know because I've been there. There was a time when my brother kept track of my food intake and if I ate more than I should, he would make hurtful comments. It didn't matter if I hadn't eaten that day or if I was trying to be good but my anxiety kicked in that day and I turned to food again to find comfort. I would feel horrible and humiliated. Sad and feel as if I shouldn't even try or even be here. So yeah, people are fat biased and some don't even realize it... other's think they're "helping people" by being mean to them. It's a damned if we do, damned if we don't... We fat people can't win.
Cancer doesn't cause obesity. Cancer has been known and around for centuries before obesity showed up. In fact, it is making your cancer risk worse. I am disabled and affirmed, with no hope of a cure, and I can't even exercise, still not morbidly obese. Quite frankly, the disabled crowd is getting sick of people using any medical condition as an excuse for bad behavior and pretending it is a disability. It is pathological behavior. When people pretend that an arthritic elbow is a disability, the actual severe conditions get ignored. Stop lying to yourself and everyone else to avoid taking responsibility.
If fat-phobia is not an unreasonable fear of fat people, it's not a phobia. A phobia is a legitimate diagnosis, and to use it to indicate bias is an insult to people who suffer from real phobias. Ever seen someone so scared of going outside they injure themselves if forced to go outside? I have. Ever seen someone's hands cracked and bleeding from too much handwashing? That's unreasonable. Someone saying that fat shouldn't be normalized isn't a fatphobe, they are an arsehole.
@@DianaMayeDesigns Welcome to the internet. Welcome to society. Skinny people get "skinny" shamed by strangers all the time. Every person with differences gets bullied by assholes. Thing is the fat movements don't help stop fatphobia, they encourage it.
@@AOGPlays Back before I got sick and fat, I weighed in at 120 lbs. I never got shamed for it. Sell that to someone else. That bridge can't be sold here. Thank you for demonstrating just how callous people truly are to the overweight. You demonstrated what my point was beautifully. Good job.
@@DianaMayeDesigns Ah so getting called a skeleton is not shaming, being told you look anorexic when you are not isn't shaming. I didn't say skinny shaming was as severe as most fat shaming dude. My main point was everyone gets bullied especially on the internet. Society doesn't like any differences. Thing is the vocal fat movement members put out what I eat in a day videos, sorry but those videos are not what the average sized person eats. Being slightly overweight or overweight VS being obese or morbidly obese are completely different things. You know in your head that the later 2 are most likely because you eat too much for your metabolism. Fact is genetics are a large factor but not the only factor and medical conditions that on their own make you obese are not common in most of the population. Seriously why are there so many vocal ex fat or ex obese people who have lost weight if it's impossible? Fat movements mostly hate them because they prove losing the weight is possible for most. They can argue that they will gain it's back in 5 years or so at best (fat movements love to argue this) but when was recovering from addiction easy. Relapsing is expected but practice makes perfect. Fat activists don't deserve hate (although it's the internet it's expected), however their influence of saying being fat isn't unhealthy and that weight loss is basically impossible is not a good look for a community trying to get rid of stigma.
I agree on one thing the diet market is a complete sham, slimming world, weight watchers and all that garbage is just a money making machine that relies on you not losing weight. Having been morbid obese and yo yoing my whole life, I feel sympathy but I do not support the glorification of unhealthy weights, its crazy and needs to stop!
The fattest people in my extended family are, in consequence, in very poor health. One is house-bound and the other an amputee. I won't be going along with this trend to normalise obesity. Good video.
Because it probably means you have (or are working towards) a good relationship with food, and you're exercising, as that help relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. Being 'fatphobic' is good for you
Anytime I hear someone say, "silence is violence" or "words are violence". What I actually hear is, "I'm an entitled child who has never experienced real violence".
Same here. Also, it grates on my nerves when they claim "trauma" because someone told them no or disagreed with them, no matter how mildly, about something. They truly have no idea what "trauma" really is if they think being told no or that someone doesn't like their favorite color is "traumatic".

I'd love to see a video on that too.

Being obese isn't just appearance, it significantly affects physical ability, mental health, and obviously the health of the individual. It also affects relationships and finance because it takes a lot of food to maintain the weight and makes working much harder. There is literally no benefit to being obese.
I guess when everyone keeps calling others "phobic" of somethings they're just projecting their own phobia onto others
True, so many people projecting

They have a phobia that everyone else is phobic of them.
My nephew, who weighed about 300 lbs, died a year ago at the age of 60. He had 80% blockage in all his arteries and didn't make it to surgery once he was in the hospital.

3:46 "Obesity is a huge problem..." heh heh heh
by their definition normal people are fatphobic but for crazy people, everyone else is crazy.

D) none of your weird options
@@stephendiggines9122 What is "weird" about the options? They are the three choices one is faced with if a family member is making such self-destructive choices; accept, support, reject. What would you suggest?
You aren't even addressing the problem, your addressing a symptom of a problem and you are giving 1 option not 3.
To summarize your responses
A) ignore
B) ignore
C) ignore and get rid
Maybe support a loved one, pretty wild and unpopular idea I know but give it a try sometime
@@stephendiggines9122 How is allowing someone to slowly kill themselves supportive?
DANG huge congrats to Misha getting linked with DW!
thank you for bringing up what not to say to someone underweight at 7:40.
If someone calls you something ending in "-phobia" i'd take it as a compliment
March for fat liberation sounds like a good idea.
Telling people that they are fat phobic is exactly like saying that they are smoker phobic. You are not allowed to smoke everywhere and it's also killing you.
YES!!!!!!!! (as a healthcare tech of over 30+ yrs that has taken care of OBESE pts)
Care: (imagine doing these on a person of 300-500 lbs with disabilities......
1. Pulling them up in bed
2. Lifting them from bed to wheelchair to toliet
3. Cleaning them on the toilet or changing an adult diaper in bed
4. Bathing

A doctor who lies to you is a doctor who only wants your money, but a doctor than says the true to you is a doctor that really cares to you.

Good video.
And people forget that besides the elderly Covid mostly killed the obese.
Glorious job, Misha!
