I just love how Amelia approaches subjects like this with a very no-nonsense explanation and simple exercise! How many of has been sent on the diagonal a zillion times by our teachers with no decipherable explanation of how to get the horse's stride to lengthen rather than speed up?

I will be saying "slower, bigger, slower, bigger" during my lengthenings from now on! This has been such a challenging concept for me but I think I'm starting to get it.

Fantastic timing on this video as the show season is rapidly approaching and I am a First Level competitor this year. The leg yield to lengthening exercise and K to B lengthen with the 10 meter circle are great with my horse. I have your First Level course. Anyone that is competing at that level needs to have that course. It helps so much with my visualization and keeps me for making common faults. Thank you so much for these exercises.

Thanks Amelia ! This is so much harder than it look! Here’s my question: you say “slower” and I’m assuming u r half halting with hand and seat- but when u say “bigger” - what then? R u pulsing your calf and or creating a longer thrust with your lifting post? “Bigger “ is definitely the challenge for me!

May I please ask a simple question about the basics. What are the aids for the extended trot as I did not see those explained. Is it just a firmer leg to push them forwards and speed control on the reins or is there something else to it ? Likewise what are the aids for the collected?

@@canary2852 not exactly, but I did some excercises by myself and what I do is:
      - stronger leg
      - standing higher in the trot (in the standing phase)
      - and I became tips I should make rein shorter
It's somehow like trying to go into the canter, but without transition into canter;)
And it works for me, but I'm not sure if these aids are proper, because I ride for a pleasure not for competition.. :)

Thank you for a great exercise, I did the leg yield on a quarter line and then trot lengthening along the wall and it worked like charm. My horse is fussy when I ask for engagement and this exercise calmed her right down and she did nice few steps of lengthening . Thank you for these Amelia! Great tips! I have a little quarter arab cross with his front legs shorter than his hind legs so lengthenings are especially difficult for him! With my warmblood, my instructor had me do some half-steps before the diagonal. I found going from extreme short to the lengthening was super useful for developing thrust in the first part of a lengthening, but then he kind of petered out and started going quick and choppy by the end of the diagonal. Maybe doing the shorter diagonal will help so he can keep the thrust. I also really liked your tip about doing a circle at the end, kind of like bringing the horse back from the canter lengthening in First Level Test 1.

While in a rising trot, it appears that you use your legs during the sitting phase. If this is correct, it is most probable that while in rising trot it would be preferable to rise on the inside diagonal when you leg yield. The timing your inside leg influencing the horses inside hind(while it is off the ground) would be more exacting.
Rising on the outside diagonal seems more exacting if you are one that uses your leg aids in the rising phase which is far less common in riders.
Would love to hear what you think about this. I have found it most helpful as I do not think you can influence a horses hind leg so much when it is on the ground, but you can more so while it is going forward into the air.

The only thing is my teacher always tells me that I have to let her mouth go more, because I am inhibiting her from really getting her hind legs out but if I do so there is no controlling her and much less bringing her back. I worked so hard on the basics with little results, questioning if of lost my touch. Finally was diagnosed with severe hock arthritis in the LH at 8 years old. First presented discomfort at 5, injections done and lameness didn't return, but it progressed so quickly in the next years injections no longer helped. Just saying this bc don't bang your head against the wall on training. Vet issues explain a lot even when your trainer is pushing you.
