  • Do you find it hard to ace the Canter Transition? Does your horse stiffen and come above the bit as soon as you put the canter aid on? This week, we’re going through how you problem solve and ride smooth and accurate transitions while keeping your horse supple, soft, and on the bit.

The transition from trot to canter is one of the most difficult transitions in my opinion! Most all horses want to come above the bit and use their neck in this transition. It can be incredibly frustrating when you horse is soft and round in the trot but the second you ask for the canter, the head goes up and your horse stiffens!
In this week's video, I go into detail about how to school and train the Canter transitions to prevent hollowing for a smoother, more supple, and enjoyable ride.
Here are a few tips to help improve your trot-canter transition:
    1) Go back to the trot-walk-trot transition. A great way to fix a difficult transition (like the trot to canter), is to go back and make sure you've done all your homework on an easier transition (like the trot to walk).
    2) Ride the trot a little rounder and forward into the canter. Prioritize keeping them round in this bigger trot to carry into the canter.
    3) Check your position. If your position and balance aren't honest, the horse will have a much harder time staying round and connected.
Watch the video where I demonstrate these exercises and show you how to incorporate them into your daily ride.
    Happy Riding, Amelia

Amelia... I am so glad I found your channel. I am an older rider (60 years old) who hasn't ridden much since my pre-teen years, but I never lost the desire and my love for horses. I started taking riding lessons a little over a year ago and I enjoy it so much. There's so much to learn. I just enjoy watching you ride so much. You are so quiet in the saddle and I really like how you are always praising your horse. Such a great example for us aspiring horse women. Thanks so much!!

I can still hear my teacher say when I was first learning, "the operation was a success but the patient died". I always felt things weren't working for two reasons. Poor direction from me and poor engagement of the hindquarters because I was missing some other basic pieces. Loved the video.

Thank you Amelia, this was very helpful. I found that my horses head was coming up because I didn't prepare for the transition, I would just ask for the canter to quickly and use too strong of an aid and it would surprise my horse. Once I prepared and slowed my aid down and just lightly asked for canter he went easily forward and round into it.

OMDog! My friend asked me how I got my mare to take this big SKIP (i.e., throwing her whole front end up in the transition) when at liberty we changed direction from one lead to another in a figure 8. I laughed hard... NOT what I was trying to accomplish. And WHY would someone want that? LOL. PS: She IS getting better. :) Your tips have been so helpful. Something that helps my mare on her right lead, since she tends to fall on the right shoulder, is to make really sure I am OFF that shoulder (not leaning forward) and actually help lift her up a bit with the right rein. It makes a huge difference in allowing her to free up that right foreleg and not cross canter.

Good Morning Amelia. I love the video. I truly need someone on the ground to help me drive my big boy Glory whwn we canter. I lose my confidence when I ride alone because he always has to try to buck in the first request of canter and all 4 legs are off the ground or than he gets lazy. It's a long road and or journey. Can't wait to see you this weekend.

This is perfect for me. I’m using and older mare that has some good training but isn’t ridden regularly. I’m not her owner but am just riding her when I can. You asked for other things we are doing and I have been working on getting her trot more regular and connected. Her up transitions to the canter are rushed just like she likes to rush her trot, so I’ve started having her go at the best slow connected trot and then ask for the canter. This seems to be working if I can warm her up enough and keep her connected in the trot.

My horse had an injury that developed into a bit of arthritis in his front foot so he tended to flatten a lot when asked to transition from canter to trot (he would tend to fall on his front end). After therapeutic shoeing and things to combat inflammation I am back to schooling him on the basics as I think he now believes diving on his front end is just simpler. I want to avoid drilling him, in recognition of his foot. While he is apparently sound, I don’t want to push overly much. So little tricks that can reconfirm the correct use of his body are welcome. 😊

Great advise. I have a bit of difficulty with the transition especially when cantering left. The horse I ride has a club foot and therefore it is a bit more difficult to first get the right lead for the canter and then transitioning in and out of the canter. I will definitely be trying these exercises and tips next time I ride. Thanks Amelia - always informative.

For some reason I am really struggling with this to the point where I am overthinking even going into the canter because I feel that I am going to fall forwards and be out of balance with the downwards transition. I'll add one little "nitpik", when asking for more roundness you are neglecting to tell the student about the increased flexion on the inside rein you are displaying in the video. You tell the audience to get the horse rounder, but do not tell them how you achieve this. Asking for softness and supple transitions depends on how to become rounder with flexion of the inside jaw. You do it effectively, and the audience may not be aware of how you are achieving this task.

Hi I know video was awhile ago but I do hope you’ll reply to me!! So I ride western and English but mainly western with the one horse I focus on riding, at our shows we loose points in western pleasure because he hollows his back from trot to canter, he’s fine in walk and trot though. Idk how much you know about western riding but in western pleasure the point is slow and loose rein, of course if you’ve ever seen western pleasure horses go slow we don’t go THAT slow, but it’s still best to go as slow as we can instead of going average speed, I have no idea what to do I’m thinking maybe try some of what you said then gradually collect less and let him drop his head? He’s usually good with dropping his head and he just naturally loves doing it, except when we start a canter then he throws it up and puts it back down again, though I was thinking that I could be leaning forward like you said, I actually do that sometimes and I just thought it would help me lean into him, so I haven’t tried this yet but next time I ride him (tonight) I definitely will and see if it helps!!

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there,
Definitely practice the tips in this video! I would recommend practicing your transitions with contact and once you can get him to transition nicely from trot to canter with contact, then try your transition with a loose rein like in the show. Maybe try riding a little more forward than you would want to in western pleasure as well. Riding more forward will make it easier for him to make the transition. As he gets stronger, then you can ask him to go slower. Making the transition at a slower speed and with the neck stretched really requires a lot of abdominal muscle and it will just take time for him to build the muscle. Transitions are the best thing to help build this strength when ridden correctly! Hope that helps! Let me know how it goes!

Thanks to the Rider Position course, I’m not dropping my shoulders anymore. I focused a lot on my position and transitions all summer, now we are going back and finessing some roundness/throughness issues since we’ve moved up a level. 💜

my horse will go behind the vertical in the canter if I make him too round for a good trot canter transition. If I let him hallow a little in the transition, my canter is better and not so behind the vertical. Having problems trading one issue for another.
