Mandy and Lee, this is cool that you returned to Thailand 30 years later. The train station is modern and clean. The food looks good and cheap. I am impressed that the food court at the train station and the food was served in a real bowl, the noodle soup looks good. 😋 Thank you for the bus tips regarding the wait time and a mask. Mandy’s bags are much smaller than in Portugal 😂. OMG! I hope Mandy didn’t miss the train! Congratulations on 10K! YAYYY!!!

Hi Sue. We've returned numerous times over the last 30 years but the last time was 14 years ago. It's such an awesome country in so many ways, it's easy to see why it is so popular with tourists. Not only are the landscapes incredible but the culture is fascinating, the people are delightful and the food is the best in the world 😋😋
We're back at the station once more eating noodle soup as I write this message. 😍
It's nice reducing baggage. We have to have it down to 7kg for the next flight so it looks like we'll be wearing a lot of clothes for the flight. 😆😆 ~ Lee

Hello M&L-This video makes me feel old. 😂 Like you, we first travelled by train from Singapore to KL to Bangkok probably more than 30 years ago but it was all by sleeper train. The stations were very old but certainly had more character than modern ones. At the time, it was our first trip to SE Asia and remember it quite well. I’m glad we did it when we did as now many things appear to have changed. Rolling stock does look familiar, however. 😊 Since our first trip to SE Asia, we returned to Thailand with our two kids and used sleeper trains from Bangkok to Chiang Mai but still from the old station in Bangkok. We arrived in Chiang Mai about 4 hours late but it wasn’t a problem for us. Have a safe journey.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ahhh, Luchesse... You are an old skool backpacker from back in the day, just like us. 😊. Remembering the good times of wandering around SE Asia on a dime and getting intoxicated on the sights and smells of exotic new discoveries. Happy daze! 😁
Yep, a lot of the rolling stock is definitely still trundling along. Things are developing though as the country is transforming towards the future. We like to be positive and embrace change which is always inevitable. Things are certainly becoming more comfortable which is important for our old bones. 😉.
That's great that you returned with the kids. What a cool adventure for them and they may even get bitten by that travel bug just as we did. 😁👍 ~ Lee

    Hi Mandy / Lee,
That new train station looks more like an airport hall and It's massive!
What a pity they didn't do any decoration (something Asian / Thai).
    -----
Storm / Cyclone / Flooding / Earthquake, New Zealand was hit pretty hard last few days. Let's hope your relatives are sound and safe.
Wishing U a good weekend. Take care 🙂

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello SERGIO!
Apologies for not replying to your last comment. Cyclone Gabrielle caused so much devastation in New Zealand, but thankfully my family are all ok, with only 100 pine trees being blown over, or broken in half, on family land.
Yes, the new station is sterile indeed! It is so like the new massive Chinese stations, which is understandable considering it's part of the new China to Singapore line as part of China's Belt and Road project. The cameras everywhere with facial recognition are also very disturbingly like those in China!
We hope you have a great weekend, and that you enjoy seeing our train journey when Part 2 comes out on Saturday. Thank you so much for your wonderful comments, and I hope you know how much we appreciate your support! ~ Mandy 🙏😁😀

@@FrugalTravellers Hi Mandy, I guess we gonna gave to get used to the different "time zone", as you guys are awake when we're not.
STERILE is the right word for it.
it's a pity they didn't do any decoration, not even a light one. Few paintings here and there would have improved the look of the station.
Glad to hear that your relatives are OK, life is obviously the most important.
That said cyclones are so destructive, while trees may have follen, it could also have destroyed roofs, broken windows, cut powerlines. Floodings could cut roads, etc.
Looking forward for part 2 of that trip.
Have a nice one, take care, 😉

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@SERGIO-cr6uy I completely agree, SERGIO... life is more important than material possessions, and we were so fortunate that no-one in our family was injured.
We're going to try to ensure that our videos go up at a time convenient for Europe and the US, especially if they're set as a Premiere. We're still working on finding the optimum time as our standard Saturday 10am doesn't work well for the US... and the video published last Tuesday did better than we expected.
Quick question, just to get feedback from one of our most consistent viewers... which day/days and time would be best for you? We might not choose that day/time but it would be so interesting to hear from your perspective! ~ Mandy

@@FrugalTravellers re "which day / days and time would be best for you ?"
I'm not gonna give you anwser but more an observation from what I've seen from other channels.
8/9 pm UTM time on Wednesday & Saturday is quite often used.
If I had a channel I would probably use that as well.
It's a time that suits Europe and the US.
In Europe it's a time just after dîner and usually before a movie on the telly.
You guys are on the go, meaning uploading videos at a specic time is more complicated than for someone in the confort of his house and who has a routine.
Now, what I would suggest is that you guys improve your video thumbnails.
Each video needs a thumbnail with big & funky letters, words that grab the viewers attention.
I would advise you to check the video thumbnails of these two channels :

Hello Mandy & Lee, thanks for sharing this! I don’t know when I’ll ever get to Thailand… although I’d love to see it one day.
We have the most delicious Thai food in Ottawa but it’s nothing like it in the NY/NJ area. I would love to eat it in Thailand.
My ex-husband has traveled the world extensively, and loves Thailand… but I do remember how he felt after not being in Singapore for a few years and when he went back he was shocked (not in a good way) at how much it had changed… into a shiny big city. Sterile was the word he used. Good for the Singaporeans I’m sure but not so great for those who loved the old city.
    Cheers ~

Thanks, guys. We have just returned from five incredible weeks in the Yucatan and are planning for Thailand later in the year.
We have one suggestion for your consideration. Jeanette (and am sure several others) is allergic to shellfish, and I wonder if you could include remarks concerning that aspect and whether vendors are mindful of that concern when they sell. It would be a valuable enhancement for your videos.
Also, I feel that sometimes your audio could be enhanced, or is it just us?
Nevertheless, we continue to enjoy your videos.

Hello Roger. Thank you so much for your comment and feedback. Yes, we sometimes have issues with audio as just use a GoPro 9 with no mods, and it's something for us to be mindful of.
Re: mentioning food allergies, I know it would be of great value for people but as our videos show our experiences, we concentrate more on matters that directly affect us, such as being on the lookout for budget food and free toilets. I think it would be a great direction for your channel to go in, as am sure that would be a valuable niche.

I’m really quite surprised about how cheap Bang Sue station is. That’s really good. I remember your man ‘Bangkok Pat’ did a video of the history of the old Bang Sue station. It’s quite funny actually, TH-cam has recommended a ‘Bangkok Pat’ video to play next.
Lee, I’m with you all day long; not travelling from Hua Lamphong will be a bit of a bummer. So much history and memories surrounding that place.
Mandy, I’m pretty frugal generally but those third class seats don’t look too inviting for me for an approximate 12 hour journey. Something has to recline if I’m on it for 12 hours.
Hey, when you’re back in Bangkok, make sure you take the canal boats as a form of transport. They go pretty central and go to the Khao San area as well. Almost as cheap as the bus as well. Never any traffic and they turn up very regularly. Safe travels. 🤙

Nice one, Ryan. 👍. Yeh, the food prices there surprised us too. You always assume it'll be dearer in a captive marketplace like that. Maybe they are getting cheap rent for the time being as the station is still in the early stages of growth. 🤔
Hua Lamphong certainly wins for character and we have happy memories of passing through there so much. We'll have to pay it a visit for old times sake. ☺️

Ola Mandy and Lee. Thank heavens you are out of the middle east. Thailand continues to experience local transmission of COVID-19. Wear a mask, practice social distancing, and follow government restrictions. actually the plan was to move all trains from hua lum pong to this station. however, there is a resistance from the union, so they move only long distance trains there. but i guess eventually all trains will be here and more shops and stores will be open.
there're so many corruptions in the srt. they've been losing money on the operation. they don't have money to improve those trains but they spend usd3 million buying a uvc sanitization robots just to stow them away, never use. if you noticed, the sign outside still says bangsue grand station, instead of the official name. they actually planned to change it but the public discovered the proposed cost was usd1million to change the sign and questioned the srt. so, they put it on hold at this moment.
