Another example of the Alpine fortress, with the Devils teeth anti-tank defenses. It is no wonder the Swiss geographers/geologists where so good , just look at there work place. Awestruck (similar to Thunderstruck but without the music)
How do you find these incredible places? Do you just look at a map and look for things that seem interesting, or do you get tips from others? Then, maybe I have a tip: the ascent from Orsieres (near Martigny) to Champex Lac, and further on to the Gorges du Durnand is quite challenging. So if you are ever in the neighbourhood..... Also, did you have to pay something at the tollgate? And if so, is it explained why you have to pay to enter the valley? As far as I can find out, the valley is the property of an 'Alp Genossenschaft' (alpine cooperative), that have held the property- and grazing rights for centuries.
Google Maps is my friend. I looked into interesting road trips around Martigny, just need the time to do them. Yes, I paid 10 Swiss Frances, it's probably for road maintenance.
