  • Using the mesh deform modifier to get realistic cloth physics. The model in the video is a android girl named B2 from the game Nier Automata.

    Just a simple tip: Instead of making the deform mesh by hand, you can simply make your cube around the base mesh, subdivide it as desired, add a shrinkwrap modifier to the cube (with the target set to the base mesh) and crank up the Offset value until you get the desired output.

    Nice vid once again Liz! What you also could do, instead of making a new cube, u can just duplicate and throw in a remesh and decimate modifer to cut down the polygons. Then do a alt+s scale to inflate it OR just a shrinkwrap modifer with above surface checked. Doing this with a 7 precision deform quality will give you an effortless and exact controll of the base mesh.

    Wow, thank you for the tutorial!
    I have two Wings that use feathers as hairs. Each feather also has hairs to look absolutely realistic, but since using an object as hair is creating hundreds of instances from the same object, they all behave exactly the same to forces like wind. So I think I might go with your approach of plugging each feather as individual object with softbody physics into the wing and see how that behaves with the wind. The pitty is, this won't affect the thousands of hairs each feather is made of, but maybe I can do some trick there as well and use a simple texture with alpha for this rather than individual strands of hairs comming out of the feather "fishbone".

    Don't use collision as in the sphere at the end of the video. Use Forcfield on the character. The side effect is, the higher the strength, the slower the simulation. Set the Type to strength and shape to surface. That means you are also adding physics to your mesh. It will be slow and might not simulate in real time, but will definitely help with the collision.

      The hair should be effected by collisions, gravity, and wind. If it's not moving correctly try using an older version of blender, since this tutorial is a bit old the the newer blender version changed the way physics works a little bit.

    For some reason the weight paint gradient tool doesn't work as intended. Instead it paints everything red from top to bottom with no actual gradient happening.
    EDIT: Ok found the problem. It's Blender 2.8 being buggy. It worked fine in Blender 2.79

I want to turn her skirt into a cloth simulation so it reacts more realistically to the dance moves. I add a collision modifier to her body and a cloth modifier to her skirt and bake. But when I play the animation her skirt falls straight down through her legs and eventually disappears from view. Every other video I've watched with simple square cloths and block obstructions does just that and doesn't run into this problem. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

    I wanna say a big hi to @Lizendy and a big thanksgiving for the tutorial, very simple and practical! I am new in the world of modeling and I am currently specializing in the modeling of Mythological characters by anthropomorphizing animals for xv2 a game of Dragon Ball. I would like to ask questions about the compatibility of this method to create objects with physic with my game, if this method also applies to clothes and other things. Since I do not want to block messages on youtube, do you have a server on discord or an email where, with your permission, we can have a chat about it?

      @Allen3D  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad to hear you liked the video. You can contact me at "Lizendy#0847" on discord or "Lizendy" on steam. As for using this method for a game, I don't think it would work unless you use Blender's game engine (it's not that good.) I think the best way to do physics like this in a game engine would be by using bones with physics joints. The bone method will work for most engines. But I don't really work with games too often so I don't know if there's a better method.

    Your tutorial was hard to follow in places, I'm a newbie to blender and 3d mostly too, so there is that, but you need to be much clearer about where you are going and what you are selecting, and not just assume people are keeping up with your tiny cursor, what I made following your steps (including going back and watching things repeat edly) did not behave anmything like what you produced. I don't know if this is because the software works differently now?

    • @Allen3D
      @Allen3D  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry to hear that. The tutorial was more meant for people who have a little bit of experience with the UI already, but even then I guess I should have been a bit more clear about exactly what I was doing. Also this tutorial was made over 3 years ago, Blender has had some changes to the physics system as well as a few other things so I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't work exactly the same way. The version in the video is 2.78 and Blenders most recent stable release was 2.83. There are definantly better ways to achieve this cloth simulation now.

    • @cdchurcher
      @cdchurcher 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Allen3D
      @Allen3D  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cdchurcher There could be a few things causing this. Make sure you always start from the first frame, because it works a bit wierd if you try to start on a later frame. Also if it's cutting off after a few seconds that's probably due to the cache amount. This is an easy fix if it's the problem just open the cache tab in the soft body and set the end frame to whatever frame you want the soft body to stop at. Sorry if I'm not very detailed in my explaination. It's been quite a while since I've done any physics in Blender.

      @@Allen3D I am gonna take back my complaints from earlier and instead just say a big thank you, I think I was just wound up and after all you were sick at the time and you still made the video, so kudos to you. I've come back to it hours later and rewatched your video, played around with it for a bit and just spent the time experimenting with the different properties to see what they do and how they interact, I've not used this for the effect I originally intended but strangely enough I have used to add some movement to the character's 'hair' (wig). Thank you! xx

    • @Allen3D

      Technically yes, but it will most likely make your hair freak out. Soft body collisions are the most accurate in Blender.

    If you don't mind telling us, what are the specs of your computer? I would like to think I have a decent one but by following this tutorial I can't get faster than 5 frames per second while the mesh is moving in my setup.

      Sadly the computer that I used in this video was confiscated. I don't remember the exact specs. But I do remember it had

    I got to the point where I'm binding the mesh to the deform block, but once I bind them, they don't move at all anymore.
    UPDATE: I'd ctrl/Z'd too far back and accidentally deleted the soft body. Anyways, I got the mesh bound to the jiggly deformer, but the mesh won't move on its own. It only moves when I move the deformer itself. What's up with that?

    • @Allen3D
      @Allen3D  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You either need to reparent the rig to the model or you just need to move your modifiers around. (btw Sorry for answering so late. It's a bit harder to get to a computer these days.)
