"The end is important in all things" People forget that. How we end a matter is just as important as how it was commenced. Our last actions are the memories that people recall the easiest. A most under rated movie deserving of so much more!
In time, all memory will vanish, the earth one day will die, and with it all subjects that contain memories. Don't cling to anything in this world, not even to memories.
In my own way, i strive to follow teachings of the Hakagure. May your blade be oiled, may your spirit be sure, and may you always struve to be humble and serve your chosen family.
I remember watching the movie that he was in in 1985 maybe earlier I immediately liked his style and his authenticity. He is such an amazing actor so few are like him.
The rainstorm quote is my favourite. Saw this when I was young, my boy turned 17 today so time passes fast but this is one of the lessons I teach him now.
The book Hagakure goes more into the makeup concept. It said that you would have makeup available if you were to be cut down by another Samurai and put it on your face so that when they collected your head it would not be unpleasant to look at.
I have to give Jim Jarmusch his due for leading me to this book. Great movie and my favorite book of all time. Superior to any cheesy self-help book, because it does not even presume to solve all the problems of one's life; it merely points out that there will inevitably be problems, and life will end sooner or later, only thing that matters is how you adapt to ever-changing circumstances. Thank you for the upload!
My fave book also.. I have paperback and hardcopy.. Given away at least 5 paperbacks that never got returned.. If they served for some knowledge I'm fine with that.
"It is bad when one thing becomes two" really hooked me. That's one of those sentiments that I've only ever found in "eastern" philosophy. It feels like something I've been trying but failing to say forever, and it's expressed so elegantly
How ghost dogs interpretations of the book are acted out in this joint is a fascinating take on samurai action. Sometimes I reference the quotes to understand ways of the samurai so I can better assimilate the appropriate nuance of relating a warrior’s path with my own.
I wish there was an Audible Hagakure read by Forest Whitaker. I generally prefer to read over listening, but that would certainly be an exception. It's hard to read if no one is listening.
You can buy the entire collection of Yamamoto Tsunetomo's The Book of The Samurai, translated by William Scott Wilson. It is one of three books I always keep by my bed; Hagakure, Art of War (Sun Tzu) and the collected works of Rùmí, the ancient Persian poet and mystic.
" c'est une bon point de vue de voir le monde comme un rêve. Quand tu fais quelque chose comme un cauchemar. Tu te diras quand tu te réveilleras que ce n'était simplement qu'un rêve. Il est dit que le monde dans lequel nous vivons n'est pas bien différent de cela ".

Even if one's head were to be suddenly cut off, he should be able to do one more action with certainty. With martial valor, if one becomes like a revengeful ghost and shows great determination, though his head is cut off, he should not die.
Well, the modern world is not much like it was in ancient feudal Japan...still good wisdom in the book though...even if you do not commit yourself to the tao of the Samuria there is still good philosophy you can learn from this book imo.
Not sure what you mean, indie just means independently produced rather than by a major studio. As far as I know that has not gone away. Probably you could even argue that bc of the internet that culture has grown.
