Definitely need to add this bit of kit to your studio! Love the science behind golf and seeing how all this data adds up. Only trouble is, you then need all this fancy tech or cheap easy access to keep measuring, otherwise it’s pure guess work until it truly beds in

Yes, I have. I used to have an extremely flat backswing that also went well beyond parallel at the top, even with a wedge in my hands. With lessons at GolfTec, I got my swing more on plane (was a VERY difficult change for me to take and took many lessons). I was also rotating my forearms on the takeaway, making the clubface really open, forcing me to rotate/flip at the bottom of the swing to slam the face shut. The results were blocks and hooks (and once in awhile a good shot). I went from a 14 handicap to a 3 when my lessons were complete. And I did this at the age of 62.

working on a change now. I have done some of this right arm work, and my body can do it, but it really messes with my already suspect strike. Mark, if you do this and do it successfully, you might well become a true long hitter.

I know this is type of content is not for everyone, but I love it. TH-cam now has so much golf content: playing vlogs, reviews you name it. But I rarely see this technical info: gears, forces, angles. Mark you are the man to bring this forward. Would love to see a longer video/series on this topic, and also a way to compare with some of the best swings on tour.
As someone who shoots in the mid 80s I dont think this will help me go lower, but I just enjoy this breakdown.

I rarely comment on TH-cam videos, but this one deserves a massive thank you. I am the player he talks about but know I can change it (and that the swing will be almost un-golfable while I do) but no one teaches this way that I've found and this helps with actually SEEING the change and the feeling it creates,

  • @mikes5918
    @mikes5918 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think it is worth going down that road, Mark. Even if it ends up being a dead end you have introduced a part of the swing that many of us don't know or think about, and that could help someone out there. Your distance journey has given me ideas about my own swing and given me the confidence to try new positions or timing, but also giving it time to take effect. Rome wasn't built in a day etc...

I’ve been working with a TPI Certified coach for over 16 weeks now this year. I was struggling to hit 250 last season (had shoulder reconstruction 2.5 years ago and been a tough road with the shoulder) but last week I hit a drive 325. I’ve made massive changes. And each change has made me worse before better. I’m finally at a place where I feel comfortable with some of these changes. I was manufacturing side bend falsely and I’ve changed that to stay in posture. A lot of things were just physically impossible for me and I’ve worked hard to overcome those things. There are no short cuts. Just hard work, feeling weird, and a lot of worse then better. This was a great video!

    • @pjpredhomme7699
      @pjpredhomme7699 ปีที่แล้ว

That is going to be the case with approx 90% of people especially adults - they do not physically have the range of motion to hold that angle in a backswing - it has to be worked at for a good period of time. Like Mark most adult males will not have that external rotation of that shoulder unless it is worked on stretched - for at least a few months - but It will make a huge improvement if he does. Women on the other hand can externally rotate that shoulder fairly easily - you can often see that in women with long overswing in the backswing - they do not have the stability which is why you will see the club wobbling all over at the top when they go to transitioning towards the forward swing.

    Hello Mark!
Crazy enough, I just had a 20-minute lesson with a PGA pro at the PGA Championship at Oak Hill. His advice was for me to shallow the club. This was explained by dropping my arms and allowing the clubhead to drop more behind myself during my downswing.
One thing he didn't mention was how to keep my right elbow more in front of my body versus alongside or behind myself.
Once I figured this out, I was now able to allow the shaft to shallow naturally. Versus dropping of the arms and wrist to shallow. Dropping the left arm tight across my chest with a tight right elbow made it impossible to return to the ball without my right arm being blocked by my right hip.
This technique that was shown in this lesson definitely allows the back to be turned more toward the target and allows my right elbow to be more naturally dropped infront of my body.
I'll enjoy this journey if you decide to share. Take care, Mark!🙋‍♂️

Looks like the right thing to do. I’m a 12.5 handicap and have been noticing as I work on taking the club back in a bigger arch, I hit the ball with driver and iron a lot better and straighter. When I miss my shot I realize I’m taking the club back on a lot smaller arch, not feeling like I’m taking it back longer.
I will work on what you are showing in your video. I think it lines up with what I’m see/feeling. Thank you

It was great meeting you there for the swing catalyst plates. I’ve been modifying my swing since returning and been battling not only my thoughts but also other people’s comments who have not seen the progress as the shots don’t go as well as they once did. So with swing changes and updating equipment I’ve gone from 230yards to 270yards with driver. Using gears now to help modify my body movements further and can’t wait to use this on the swing catalyst plates.

We're lucky to have had the first Gears3D installation in Canada and had a few goes at it and it was very enlightening! years of teachers ignoring the real problems and getting nowhere got discovered in one session! Now comes the hard part of actually fixing the issue though. For me it's less about speed and more about consistency. But I've already noticed pleasant side effects with both. Externally rotating my rear shoulder a lot more (think DJ backswing) and feeling a lot of width and turn in process. Looking forward to seeing more of your findings.

I think you should 100% give it a go it makes sense . If you've over bent that right arm you've got to regain that width on the downswing this will take you about the first 5 holes or so to time up . I'm going to work on it it i saw my swing on video and I'm doing the same thing and over extending the left wrist . Cheers Mark

Using the speedsticks over the last winter increased my right arm bend, because it was easier to pick up speed. When my friend pointed out that my clubhead was going quite a way past parallel I watched your video and checked and I was doing the same as you.
Keeping the right arm straighter feels like I’m only swinging back halfway, it’s actually just short of parallel but it’s a lot more work.
Starting the downswing without the benefit of the clubhead inertia is so weird and feels like I’m not going to generate any speed whatsoever. But… my path has improved considerably and I’m hitting a proper draw rather than pull, and ball flight is stronger even without the pull. I’ll definitely stick with it and work in it through the winter.

Love it! This is the struggle, isn't it? Even someone, such as yourself, whom has loads of captured video content of your swing, can discover, or rediscover elements which may increase your abilities. Should you apply this changed to your swing? Absolutely. You can always return to a more 'safe' swing. Of course, change is hard. Unless your are Rory, or Adam Scott, (insert favorite swing here) we can all improve, if motivated. And, keep relearning. - I've found great value and relate strongly to your swing instruction. Thanks.

Great video Mark, I had lesson recently for the first time as an 11 handicapper the pro changed a lot, posture grip, takeaway it was totally away from my comfort zone, however persistence has prevailed and I can see it bearing fruit in my game. The takeaway has improves have increased ball speed and distance I know I just have to keep with the programme and develop the habit of doing what I have been thought all the times even with driver in hand.

Hey Mark, very interesting video as always, love following you go down some rabbit holes through the years and I always love to go on this golf journey with you and get a deeper understandig of golf.
The idea of this right arm really resonates with me and I somewhat found this out on my own a couple of months ago, that I am able to get more power from less arm bend and by the move that I can only describe as it's like I'm carrying a tray with my right hand when I am in the top of the backswing. That feeling gives me more elbow "turn" (don't know how else to describe it), less elbow bend and good wrist angles.
Another side point here is that I always tried to improve my wrist angles only by putting effort into my left wrist bend, which was hard for me shomehow. Now I actually figured out that with this tray feeling, you're actually improving your left wrist bend by bending the right wrist, an "aha" moment for sure.
Could you explain maybe someday how this could result in more power in the swing? This is something I still don't understand. I can feel it, but I don't understand it yet!
    Thanks for all you do!
    Kr, Ruben

Mark its great to see you keep expanding your horizons what is possible for yourself. My swing change that changed everything for my game was being to load deep into my left side and internally rotate. This allowed me to push as hard as I like off my right side. Prior not being able to get into my left side caused major issues with my back, speed and consistency. My driver was in ruins because i was always stuck and hanging back causing major issues. Now being able to get into the left side prior to releasing the club allows for much more freedom for everything. IMO Im not a fan of the jumping that you do - something looks off. If you notice tour pro's their body sequence - how deep they get before they turn- release the club. Then again I understand you got to move how your body allows...anyways I applaud your efforts to pushing the envelope to improve your game.

Thanks for the reminder it’s ok for good swing changes to produce bad shots until you practice with it. Keep representing the tech. I knew I liked you when I saw both Star Wars and guitars behind you 🤓

I think you should go for it. I'm a weekend golfer 17 handicap. Would like to change few things in my game but don't feel I have time to deal with the bad phase I would go through.

This information is gold in my eyes, never seen it explained this way before. Can't wait to try it out at the range and get it ingrained into my own swing. Also look forward to seeing your results if you do it

Watched this and went down range to look at where i was in relation to the right arm etc. Ball striking ok, however the occasionally i hit one that feels really good. Guilty of the points made by guy left/right arm kinked even though I think I’m pushing back straight. Widened arc, checked right arm, not over the 90 degree. Feels different on timing but will persist, definitely the fact that being short (5, 7) helps. Another positive thing it showed be I grip too tight sometimes. Great content, most appreciated.

Had a gears lesson Saturday...exact same issue. Played horrendous the day after and as you say would be easy to run away from this but I'm going to stick at it and work with Jonathan 😎

This is very interesting to me especially as I finally got a hitting net yesterday so I can start practicing seriously from home. Not sure how to measure my progress (if any) other than trying to film myself though. Just turned 64 and only been playing for five years but determined to keep improving.

Excellent video Mark (and the boys). Go for it I say. The big problem will be sequencing. Major changes are always tough but it'll be fun to see you try. Good luck. 💪

It would be great to understand whether a change in hip rotation would work in parallel with the elbow refinement.

I used to have a massive over-the-top swing path about 20 yrs ago. I had gotten to the point where I had made it very repeatable, to the point where I hardly ever hit a bad shot at the range. However, I got sick (I think it was walking pneumonia) and had no energy so even hitting balls was a chore. After a few months layoff I wasn't the same so a teaching pro friend told me I should look at my swing on video. It was then that I completely changed my swing to try to emulate what Tiger was doing. It was brutally inconsistent and my game suffered massively. I then had a number of things happen that led me away from golfing to where I hardly ever played, let alone had time to work on things. Fast forward to this year and I decided to start dedicating time towards working out all the kinks. This video, along with the "Why Amateurs can't release like PGA players" video has had a massive effect on my swing. I went out yesterday and started hitting shots like I used to, where you feel the compression of the ball and it just explodes off the club face. It's going to take time but I'm back on track. I picture emulating Rory's swing when I set up and that visual helps a lot. At 55 yrs old I was sore as hell later in the day but I know that's more a result of working on my flexibility. Thank you so much Mark. These things have helped in many ways, including bringing back the love for the game I grew up with.

Great video. I was told this in a recent lesson I had. I get very narrow in my swing. My coach told me about trying to feel like i keep wide to give me more width and room to turn and eventually more speed and distance. Although it felt alien because I'm used to being narrow I could see a difference straight away. My strikes were more consistent and even at a slower swing speed at the time because I was concentrating on the width the ball was going just as far because I was finding middle of the face more. I definitely need to practice it more because I do tend to slip into old habits. 👍🏻
