Too many people whine about Smaug and the Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon dragons being wyverns instead of European dragons. All wyverns are dragons. Not all dragons are wyverns. There are also wyrms, coatls, lungs, drakes, etc. People need to stop trying to gatekeep what defines a dragon. Dragons don’t have to have four legs and two wings. Great video. I love when accurate scientific measurements are made for these massive legends.

Its also funny because in the story "St George vs The Dragon" the Dragon is basically depicted as a Wyvern in all the old arts and even some variations of the story. So these people who made up in their head that Wyverns and Dragons are different entities are probably just following the made up rules of some DnD books or some shit.

The other dragons are still shown to be situationally hurt by extreme heat or fire, but he can't be hurt by fire at all, meaning the breath weapons of the others are useless against him. a "classic" european dragon is a bit of an oxymoron as a lot of Dragons depicted in West European folktales are often drawn in early art as Wyverns with 4 limbs. If you google St George and the Dragon, you'll see all the medieval art of St George on a horse fighting a horse sized Wyvern.

At minute 3:13 you refer to the response of one of the HotD showrunners in a video about Vhagar's size, in which she comments on its size being "150m long", however, I believe this was a confusion from her, because as many also put in the comments of this video, in fact 150m refers to the dragon's wingspan, in an interview, Sven Martin, the effects supervisor for the series, makes this very clear, attesting to both the size of the dragon and its wingspan:
"In 2021, Sven Martin explained the visual effects work made by Pixomondo on Without Remorse. He then worked on Help, I Shrunk My Friends and Upload. Today he tells us about his return to Westeros for the series House of the Dragon.
'Some of the dragons are really big, how does that affect your work?
Some of the aspects I have mentioned already. The short answer is: large in frame - more detail. It’s most difficult to deal with large scales during pre-production, when you don’t have the plates yet and nothing real to compare against. Vhagar is supposed to be 90 meters long with a wingspan of 150 meters, so we added a digital double of Aemond to our turntables to get visually reminded about the scale of the dragons.'."
Therefore I believe that your original estimates regarding the size of Vhagar and consequently, Balerion, are closer to the truth.
    * Text continues in the answers below

    • @Diegoromir
      @Diegoromir 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

With this information, I don't believe size is an advantage for Balerion in a fight against Smaug, as Tolkien's dragon appears to be larger:
From the One Wiki to Rule Them All website:
"Smaug's actual size is unknown as it is never explicitly mentioned in The Hobbit, and illustrations by Tolkien, Alan Lee, and John Howe greatly vary in size in each portrait while the size of the Front Gate of the Dwarven kingdom in illustrations seems similar to what was depicted in the live action films. In The Atlas of Middle-earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad, Smaug is said to be about 18 meters (59 feet) in length, but this is to be considered non-canonical. Other sources, for the film, name Smaug as being 130 meters (427 ft) in length, which is greater than two jumbo jets."
"Tolkien gives some indication later of the dragon's size in relation to the depiction of Bilbo as portrayed in the original illustration for The Hobbit in Letter 27, which was published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien:
‘The hobbit in the picture of the gold-hoard, Chapter XII, is of course (apart from being fat in the wrong places) enormously too large. But (as my children, at any rate, understand) he is really in a separate picture or “plane” - being invisible to the dragon.’"
"One of few other descriptions available by Tolkien is that the hidden passage, with 5 feet tall door and passage wide enough for three people to walk together, was too small for the dragon even when he was young, and he considered it a 'tiny hole which he should have sealed up' and could only put the tip of his jaw into the passage when he was grown and breathed out fire and vapor not from his jaw but from his nostrils instead. Additionally, the Black Arrow launched by Bard completely disappeared into the dragon's body, and the corpse of Smaug severely destroyed Lake-town when it fell. These, along with descriptions of dragons by Tolkien to possess elongated, serpentine bodies, indicate that Smaug in book could have been much larger than the above mentioned estimation by Karen Wynn Fonstad."
"In the film adaptations, Smaug dramatically increased in size. In the comments of 'Made in the Makings', his size is mentioned to be 'bigger than two jumbo jets' or 'twice as long as and twice as wide as Boeing 747'. In pre-publishing comments by Joe Letteri, the Oscar winning VFX supervisor from Wētā Digital, Smaug was said to be 'twice as big as a Boeing 747', indicating each wing could be more than 60 to 70 meters in width. These indicate that Smaug in the movies ranged from 130 to 152 meters in length and from 120 to more than 140 meters in width."
It is also important to highlight that at the end of his life and at the height of his size, Balerion had some disadvantages:
"When Princess Alyssa Targaryen came to the Dragonpit to claim a dragon of her own in 75 AC, the Dragonkeepers persuaded her not to try and claim Balerion, insisting that the dragon had become old and slow, suggesting to her that she would much more prefer a faster dragon.
The last rider of Balerion was Prince Viserys Targaryen, who entered the Dragonpit to claim the dragon in 93 AC. Balerion was hard to rouse, and struggled when Viserys urged him into the sky. They flew around King's Landing three times, although Viserys later confided to his father that he had originally intended to fly Balerion to Dragonstone. However, fearing the dragon lacked the strength to do so, Viserys had opted otherwise."
"By 93 AC, Balerion had finally stopped growing. He had grown sluggish and heavy and was difficult to rouse. When Prince Viserys Targaryen claimed the dragon that year, the dragon struggled to take to the air. Prince Viserys believed the dragon no longer had the strength to fly from King's Landing to Dragonstone"
In the case of Smaug, after 171 years he was in Erebor, the dragon was at the peak of his form and power, even though he was probably older than Balerion.

Nah Smaug would destroy them all ngl.
He is extremely intelligent and would be able to see that the Red Death used gas to fire its breaths and Smaug would outmaneuver it and blow it up the same way toothless did, if it gets hold of Smaug though he's dead so that's a med-high diff win for Smaug.
As for Balerion... at his biggest he could barely fly so Smaug and the Red Death would absolutely obliterate him even if you use Balerions maximum size estimate all they have to do is outmaneuver Balerion which being that he can barely fly would be easy then they attack his wings and he falls to his death... Balerion is neg-low diffed by these 2.
Should have used Vhagar she has the most kills of any Dragon in the GoT universe meaning Vhagar is the most experienced and battle hardened dragon we see in the series and she doesn't struggle to fly so she'd probably destroy a barely airborne Balerion in a Dragon dance.

@@TheUntold_Heresy he didn't say they are equal lol. he said that balerion could make Smaug work for his win, but he'd win nontheless. Smaug is far smarter and when balerion reached his biggest size he was very far from his prime. Smaug is gonna clean the floor with Balerion's intestines lol

@@salva2387 He said “Basically, no. Drogon is a very young dragon and still barely large enough to get Dany into the sky… Smaug is gigantic, not to mention that Smaug talks and would probably have an intellectual advantage. But Balerion could give Smaug some trouble; they’re more equivalent in the size and ferocity department.” Check the video. Stop riding hard, its a fictional dragon not the soucy hot dog
