Tbf Tekken was never realistic to begin with since it was always somewhat wacky since the very first game. It wasn’t until future game installments embrace the wackiness FULLY.
There's a difference though. In Tekken 1-4 Tekken was still a good martial arts fighting game with some supernatural and wacky elements on the side. Over the years to its peak so far in Tekken 8, it has slowly (d)evolved into an over-the-top anime waifu fighting game. This is why I stopped playing in T8. I really hope VF6 can be my new main 3D fighting game.
Tekken was the most interactive fighting game till Tekken 5. They just went too much in Soul Caliber and DOA direction. Tekken 8 can be great with a massive nerf patch
I've been saying for a long time that I wish more fighting games had more environmental things, other than like VF3 and Smash bros, it's pretty rare. But look at any fight scene in any movie, book, anime etc, always, ALWAYS used the environment in crazy ways. I have wanted to JUMP INTO a fight scene forever now, and the strongest at that is like DB Fighterz? Specifically for DB fights, but anything else?
Yeah, more environmental interactions please and I hope they bring back uneven surface. Back then it made the fighting mechanics wonky, but with today's tech I think they can compensate the uneven surface in real-time. Or they could provide 1 stage specifically made for e-sport. With customizable backgrounds and decorations so every tournament organizer can make their own look-n-feelfor the stage, but still have the exact same shape, size, flat surface and no environmental interactions.
A few weeks ago i had never played VF before but I got so hyped about new VF I preordered VF5 REVO and managed to emulate VF4, I even tested Akira in DoA5 a few days ago. There's indeed a hole in the fighting game market with games that are MA vs MA, there's so many games with crazy fireballs and super moves i feel like I've outgrown them at this point. And this is coming from someone who played BT2/3 back in the day, I'm kinda tired of the "cutscene combat" SF has with level 3 supers and Tekken with rage arts, its really nice to see a game that does things differently
It will be on pc, with crossplay as well going by the rumors months ago. For the time being, you can play VF5 REVO next month, the standard version is going for 15 bucks Rn
I'm More Tekken Than Virtua Fighter But I can see why some gamers prefer the Sega title over the Namco Bandai fighter afterall a decade ago I was more Into WWE Allstars than the NBA Jam Reboot from 2011 so people have their tastes In life
Looks like it has a limited block bar could be used for limited punch kick parrys, also I would like physical damage to be shown and fighters looking tired
The newer characters from VF2 onwards should stay. Especially Blaze and Vanessa. They are basically mainstays at this point. Im curious to see what the redesigns will look like.
I hope every character from virtua fighter returns. If they are dead or too old i hope the entire moveset is passed on to a "new" character. But i also we get guest characters from yakuza and shenmue
9:39 if they can guest a guest composer in the studio with Sega sound team and RGG, I'd like Makoto Hosoi to be there. I've been listening to DOA 2's soundtrack and it is absolute fire 🔥🔥🔥.
I think auto-guard is on-theme for VF. I mean, they are martial arts masters, they shouldn't have to think to guard, it's automatic for them. Players should keep manual control, but auto-guarding should be implemented IMO. They can add frame-perfect guard for a tiny bit benefit or something.
Interesting. I hope they don't simplify it. 2:37 Yes it always has been. Most Tekken players claim it to be serious stuff. When it's all just goofy anime stuff.
I agree. The other Tekken games fell off around 6. If you're gonna do the crazy stuff, embrace it. For example, Tekken 7 didn't embrace what the series was known for. That's what I got from playing Tekken 7 - what little i played. Tekken 8 they embraced it.
So does this mean we will finally get a campaign mode in the game and arcade endings cause I feel like those have been the biggest weakness for VF. I’m sure they are going to throw in the classic polygon play through for us veterans of the series who played it when it first hit the arcades cause that is a cool trip down memory lane. Hopfully this game does well and spawns sequals and maybe we might get some new fighters in the roster maybe as DLC but still keeping the series alive can’t wait for more trailers.
The lasers and other nonsense were the exception, not the rule. Now it's the other way around and the people who stuck for the realistic aspect of the game got disappointed by it. I'm glad I left Tekken behind in 7, the greatest aspects of the franchise are all accidental and the devs absolutely hate it.
I’m so happy and excited to see this series make a comeback. The last time I played these games I think I was legitimately a child and I’m 26 now lol. Can’t wait to see how this comes together.
When attacks connect they need impact. Ik its old but vf5 felt like a steam new release bc there wasnt any real impact to the hits, even the stuns from jeffry and wolfe dont feel like anything. If the game was just tekken without the anime stuff and air juggling plus had faster movement it would be pretty high adrenaline and fun to watch. I doubt it will go that way but im still excited for this comeback
I find it funny that they mentioned how Akira, Ryo, and Kiryu have similar hairstyles, especially since I read somewhere that Shenmue was originally gonna be a Virtua Fighter RPG spin-off before it became an original game!
@@j.i.nthenobody54 The anime is actually good. But yeah, no one talks about it because the games don't even have character endings xD they made a RPG set in the future and you catch VF's characters like they're Pokémon and that thing had more lore than any other game in the series xD
During the online tournaments like 12 years ago. I didn’t know what I was doing but made it to the online semifinal just spamming Wolf’s side step throw.
They are basically reinventing the 3D fighting game era again from what we got of the teaser trailer with the dynamic blocking animations. I'm so fckn hype for this game!!!. VF set the the bar up with this one! Well done devs I knew they could do it 💯
I hope they finally ditch the slow-motion floating gravity. There is nothing more realistic than punching your opponent in the ankle mid-air to make him stay afloat. People fall down. Fast. Punching their ankle won't make them float in air. I know VF actually invented air-juggling but it's so silly I think it's time they move on to other innovation. Leave air-juggling to Tekken.
@@davidsentanu7836 That and ducking which usually looks like crouching. IRL you usually block low by having a lower stance and just moving your feet out of the way, like Stella did in the trailer, plus you can also bob and weave, like Akira did. I sure do hope that's just part of the defense animations and not a special parry or something.
When VF5 launched on the 360, it was one of the funnest launch titles I've ever played. Many people outside of the FGC bought it. VF6 will most likely be be even bigger and better.
Raw martial art fighting games could be fun, but to be fair, it's kinda boring to look imo, when I play with my friends, I want to do crazy bs super moves with awesome effect that make my friends wow, and that's fun.
in the trailer, you can see dust coming off the kicks, i think if the game goes hyper realistic (and they are working along side nvidia) the realism could make up for the lack of over the top crazy special effects, cause tekken and every other game already do that. thats one big reason im hyped for VF6, no special effects needed, realism and great cinematography could carry us into a new fighting game age.
As someone whose only knowledge of Virtua Fighter was that one time they appeared in a Sonic Racing game on the Wii... I am interested to see where this goes
As a long time SF fan - I’m down for a more grounded “mixed martial arts” style game - throwing players into testing different fighting styles. Sega seem to be taking this game very seriously in terms of getting it right and exploiting an area of 3D fighting not currently available. It’s good to have different fighters. I just hope fans will adopt it (if it’s good). I’m looking forward to seeing what they do.
As an old-head, I like their decision to have continued support for 5 as a parallel for people who don't take to the new style. Not saying I'm assuming the new one will be bad, I love RGG, it just makes news about gameplay changes easier to swallow.
I knew Lau is going out but Shun as well? Damn. I think Shun is the best representation of drunken kung-fu in the fighting game history. I wish he would stay.
Would love to see if they get guest characters, but keep them rooted in the real life non-fantastical way. Like, what would ryu be like without fireballs, how would a shoryuken work in real life? Basically the opposite of what most guest characters do nowadays where they try to capture the character as they are, id wanna see the character if they were fully grounded in reality
Funny enough SNK did that with Ryo from Art of Fighting when he was in Buriki One. He uses his usual style but without any of his projectiles and other over the top moves.
Honestly, if their approach of "going beyond just fighting game" is to make the story mode be a litteral interactive kung-fu movie, and each character is a different point of view to piece together the actual plot? That'd be awesome if done right. Sounds basic, but could be enough.
I'm only hoping that they don't introduce "modern" crap like meter, supers, "rage arts", etc. and they are only referring to modern content and QoL stuff, like Rollback and crossplay, replay reviews, robust training mode and single player content, better character design and animations, bigger roster, BASED ON MARTIAL ARTS, maybe FITTING GUESS CHARACTERS, that kind of stuff VF doesn't need auto-combo control squeme, supers, projectiles, Additional comeback mechanics, super meters or meters in general, keep that stuff to the other games
@@j.i.nthenobody54 that's what I was referring to, 3d fighters don't need them, when you have side steps and 3d movement, supers don't add any complexity or anything valuable at all, it's just a fancy gimmick in 3d games

Its been 15 years, they always try to innovate but keep that original sense of what VF is, without it simply being a duplicate of another fighting game, least of all a duplicate of another VF title, otherwise people will just play the other games instead of the new one. Im sure at its core, itll be quintessentially VF, but with a coat of new paint, and actual combos! like, PROPER ones! having VF-style combo paths as a main mechanic is a big deal for them, so i hope it works!
I was so happy when the devil triggers were eliminated at the end of the tekken 8 story. Kazuya and Jin going old school hand to hand. I thought this is gonna be a new direction. Sadly I dont think that anymore. VF is more my speed. I'm a Lei wulong main for a reason. Kung fu movies. If vf can bring that feel ,goodbye tekken.
@shajita yes I have all vf iterations he is pretty good, but he reminds me of Feng Wei. I hope there is a new character that fights like jackie chan. Shun di does nail the drunken master pretty well. There are so many possibilities.
Oh, yes good theory about Sarah / Stella / Dural, because Sarah was kidnapped by J6 in replacement of Tsuki Kage (Kage-Maru's mother) Dural's original model. OMG totally forgot about this !
I used to prefer Tekken over VF (since the begining) But after T7, T8 and recently VF US/REVO I'm more excited for VF and really think Tekken has lost it's way and become more like an NRS game (visuals and guest characters over gameplay)
Fck no! Kiryu fits better in Tekken. It would be an insult to all the fans that been begging for Kiryu to be in the Tekken all these years being the most requested guest character in the history of the FGC.
@@li0nsmaneNow that VF is coming back, why the hell would Sega hand over Kiryu or any Yakuza character over to Tekken now, especially when RGG studio themselves are developing the new VF.
I wonder if this new Virtua Fight adds a Jump button, and gives you full 3D movement with the up and down directions instead of keeping you on a 2D plane and having you double tap up and down to side step left and right. The way the blocking animations look makes me wonder what’s going on there. Because it could just be a Street Fighter 6 Parry type deal where you’ve got these nice animations that play out when you’re holding the button. OR, it could be functioning like a boxing game, where holding block and pressing different directions while in that state lets you manually dodge attacks yourself.
VF already has jump mechanics. Do you mean that they should expand on them? And how are you sidestepping that you need to double tap? It's just a 2 or 8 input to evade. If you want to move in the Z-direction faster without evasion, then it's just OM by inputting 2 or 8 P+K+G.
@@WhatisaLee I know Virtua Fighter already has a jump mechanic. I wonder if they’ll add a Jump Button, a button that when pressed makes your character jump, and just have your directional inputs be for movement instead of a combination of movement in any direction and also jumping and crouching. If they want to make things easier on people coming into the game, the direction inputs just doing one thing, instead of a combination things, would make it easier.
@@DIOBrando-ij2bpTrue. Also in 'reality' (one of their tenet) people don't jump much in a fight. Relegating it to a button would actually make it even more realistic.
I'm thinkin a Yakuza like World Tour Mode for a single player campaign. Stella might be a swerve and is really a user created player character for the said campaign.
Tapping up and down is super intuitive. If they want to make a button, do it for the jump button. People don't jump very much in real fights. Relegating it to a button would be fine.
@@davidsentanu7836 that could also work. i dont want to do a hop/jump when i press UP, like in tekken, i want to smoothly sidestep. so if they can make it smoother than tekkens horrible sidestepping, it could work really well. VF5 always felt very nice when it came to movement.
What if characters are all custom with certain archetypes for each style. Maybe like sf6, with old characters being trainers or part of a arcade quest like mode. I really felt like the old quest mode is perfect to build on with great ai bosses even vf veterans will be challenged by.
I hope Sega took the past 10 years and learn from other fighting game. Killer instincts with it's music, street fighter with it's flashy visuals. Tekken with great match making and story telling. Dead or alive with it's tag team gameplay etc
I think VF, will be what Tekken was in the past, only pure Martial Art's fight, without this bullcrap of Heat Systems, Rage Art, Armor Moves, Break moves... Tekken was all about Martial Art's, but like you said we don't have Muay Thai vs Judo for example!? We have Leo, Eddy, Steve, Marshall Law... They are at least the most loyal to the GAME, the real Martial Art's. Tekken is losing the essence of real Martial Art's. Plus Tekken was all about execution, now it is much easier.
Temen is more than fine, it’s great. It’s selling well and most importantly it’s fun and has a long life ahead of itself. You’re just describing fun stuff. Stick to Tekken 3 lil bro
Honestly, reading this interview it feels a lot like what Daisuke and Akira said about Strive back in 2019/2020. Based off that I really don't think that this game will be made for the older fanbase but similar to Arcsys, they'll do a bunch of PR talk to appease the older fans but ultimately will try to reinvent the game for a newer and bigger audience. Back then I believed Arcsystemworks but that's a thing of the past. And I'll be cautious with the new VF release before buying it. EDIT: And that comes from someone who never played VF outside of the new REVO release on Steam recently.
Since seeing the VF Direct and hearing the devs say they're focusing on "Innovation" and "Reality", I thought up a few ideas on what they might try and do for VF 6 1) Hitting certain parts of your opponent's body, such as their right leg, could deal more damage and carry over to the next round 2) A stamina bar that could be tied to blocking and dashing/side-stepping 3) A more casual game mode where players can pick up items off the ground and use them as weapons, a-la Yakuza Y'all got any ideas for VF 6?
In case of fighting game, especially SF. Seems done pretty well tbh. With modern control, this series gain a lot of popularity in Japan especially. Many well known streamer / and vutubers joining gave huge boost to the popularity. Most of em learned the game with modern, some even switched to classic later on. It make it easier for japanese pros to teach them too.
They want a wider audience appeal not just the fighting game community and focuses in realism. Expect MAJOR changes. I'm expecting an RPG ala Shemue+World Tour with a fighting game battle system.
Fighting games might be the ONLY part of the gaming industry still stuck in the 80s, and thus, the only part of the industry in need of a serious modernization lol

Kage's mom was a prototype and isn't the dural in vf5 and i think 4
@@Morrigan101 It's actually multiple companies that are in on the Dural project. The corpo alliance goes by the name "Judgement Six", and each company is named after a particular Tarot card.
Lion's backstory in 5 and all subsequent editions of it reveals that his dad is CEO of one of the J6 companies - its why Jean Kujo entered the tournament on orders to eliminate him (since Lion was poking his nose where he shouldn't have and learned too much).
@@AshramAstarciaV2 i see.
But yea Sarah probably finally was turned into a Dural as that was something J6 wanted at least since VF5
And the wacky parts were always the worst lol
Ya know people can enjoy Tekken and VF right? Dont need to choose sides.
I'm rooting for em. I hope its the best fighting game ever.
The K-1 analogy they used hooked me. I think the new VF will be more than fine.
Love how much of Max's content is just him talking about what he knows
I mean you can't talk what you don't know can you?
Dural is Kage Maru's mother according to the Virtual Fighter manual
The first Dural. It gets more complicated.
I really want to see what this new VF will become. I've wanted to try VF for so long, but it's been exclusive to consoles, I hope it makes it to PC
It's on PC. Just gotta wait for the late January release
It will be on pc, with crossplay as well going by the rumors months ago. For the time being, you can play VF5 REVO next month, the standard version is going for 15 bucks Rn

More VF news. Yes please!
I’m so EXCITED bruh! I can’t wait for the day they drop that release date 🥹🥹🥹
We need a VF anime remake
I'm More Tekken Than Virtua Fighter But I can see why some gamers prefer the Sega title over the Namco Bandai fighter afterall a decade ago I was more Into WWE Allstars than the NBA Jam Reboot from 2011 so people have their tastes In life
I used to be a Tekken fan too but IMO it has slowly devolved into an over-the-top anime waifu fighting game, which sadly isn't for me anymore.
I appreciate it the news update on video games. I like to see more of these types of videos more often when the news comes out about the game.
Triple A is ambitious. Hope they succeed. If they make story mode, open world with writing from the Yakuza team, wow.
Good afternoon Max just wanted to wish you and your family all the best during the Holidays and have a healthy and prosperous new year🎉🥂
Looks like it has a limited block bar could be used for limited punch kick parrys, also I would like physical damage to be shown and fighters looking tired
Virtual Fighter better add the Main character from Sifu as a guest character
I really hope El Blaze makes a return in VF alongside Vanessa Lewis. I'm very excited to see how VF evolves in modern day.
The newer characters from VF2 onwards should stay. Especially Blaze and Vanessa. They are basically mainstays at this point. Im curious to see what the redesigns will look like.
VF has so few characters. I hope they bring them ALL back for the base roster. ALL.
Max is *100%* _correct_ about Tekken 😅
I hope every character from virtua fighter returns. If they are dead or too old i hope the entire moveset is passed on to a "new" character.
But i also we get guest characters from yakuza and shenmue
9:39 if they can guest a guest composer in the studio with Sega sound team and RGG, I'd like Makoto Hosoi to be there. I've been listening to DOA 2's soundtrack and it is absolute fire 🔥🔥🔥.
I feel that moving away from P, K, G would be a mistake. I sure hope they don't do that.
Tekken 6 was a serious downhill while T7 and T8 continued it.
Tekken 5 was the ideal middle ground of goofiness and seriousness.
@@bilateriannewt4222the final boss of 5 was a fucking demon
I agree. The other Tekken games fell off around 6. If you're gonna do the crazy stuff, embrace it. For example, Tekken 7 didn't embrace what the series was known for. That's what I got from playing Tekken 7 - what little i played. Tekken 8 they embraced it.
I just wanna play *YEAAAH!* the character.
People thinking Tekken was a martial arts based game when it wasn't to begin with it was always like it been with lasers and all the other stuff 😂
This whole video is exactly what I've been thinking the last few weeks.
I find it funny that they mentioned how Akira, Ryo, and Kiryu have similar hairstyles, especially since I read somewhere that Shenmue was originally gonna be a Virtua Fighter RPG spin-off before it became an original game!
I think Tekken has been silly from its beginnings. All of those wacky things you mention were already in Tekken 2. It never was a change of direction.
The direction never changed, just the emphasis. Classic Tekken put less emphasis on the wacky silly stuffs, while newer Tekken put more on them.
@@davidsentanu7836 Classic Tekken didn't really put emphasis on anything, TBH.
@@ScLuigi By "classic" Tekken I mean Tekken 3 and Tekken 5, not Tekken 1.
Can't believe Max has not seen Virtua Fighter anime about Akira's past.
Shenmue is just Akiras lore copy and pasted to ryo lol
Who tf has actually consumed VF lore? Literally no one talks about it
@@j.i.nthenobody54 The anime is actually good. But yeah, no one talks about it because the games don't even have character endings xD

They better NOT add M controls or that 1 button combo bull shit in VF6. If you don't play fighting games please just go to training mode and get good.
Then play all the other thousands of fighting games with that exact same gimmick
十年早いんだよォ!
"Arcade port of new VF is not being considered at the moment."
Akira: "You're 30 years too late to consider arcade ports!"
He had a disciple he was searching for.he might take his place
I'm only hoping that they don't introduce "modern" crap like meter, supers, "rage arts", etc. and they are only referring to modern content and QoL stuff, like Rollback and crossplay, replay reviews, robust training mode and single player content, better character design and animations, bigger roster, BASED ON MARTIAL ARTS, maybe FITTING GUESS CHARACTERS, that kind of stuff
VF doesn't need auto-combo control squeme, supers, projectiles, Additional comeback mechanics, super meters or meters in general, keep that stuff to the other games
Supers and meters are not new bro. That shit been in fighters since the 90s. New to 3d, maybe
@@j.i.nthenobody54 that's what I was referring to, 3d fighters don't need them, when you have side steps and 3d movement, supers don't add any complexity or anything valuable at all, it's just a fancy gimmick in 3d games

Fighting vipers always felt like a more modern virtual fighter.
I love the background music he always uses
Its been 15 years, they always try to innovate but keep that original sense of what VF is, without it simply being a duplicate of another fighting game, least of all a duplicate of another VF title, otherwise people will just play the other games instead of the new one. Im sure at its core, itll be quintessentially VF, but with a coat of new paint, and actual combos! like, PROPER ones! having VF-style combo paths as a main mechanic is a big deal for them, so i hope it works!
I just hope it keeps the depth of the older games.
Would be kinda cool if Ryo Hazuki was in VF.
They could also add Nozomi using jiujitsu for a joke hidden character.
A Lei fan, eh?
Have you tried Lei-Fei in VF?
@shajita yes I have all vf iterations he is pretty good, but he reminds me of Feng Wei. I hope there is a new character that fights like jackie chan. Shun di does nail the drunken master pretty well. There are so many possibilities.
Shenmue original plan was to be VF RPG. Looks like VF6 story mode is hoping to get close to that.
That looks insanely good ngl
As long as there wont be armored moves and a comeback mechanic, ill be hyped.

Hopefully VF is good, I can’t take the tekken shilling any longer
Oh, yes good theory about Sarah / Stella / Dural, because Sarah was kidnapped by J6 in replacement of Tsuki Kage (Kage-Maru's mother) Dural's original model. OMG totally forgot about this !
I never played Virtua Fighter Quest. Did that have a story that related to VF or was that some alternate continuity or something?
I used to prefer Tekken over VF (since the begining) But after T7, T8 and recently VF US/REVO I'm more excited for VF and really think Tekken has lost it's way and become more like an NRS game (visuals and guest characters over gameplay)
Funnily enough, Tekken got dumb when they didn't have any more Virtua Fighter games to copy the homework from.
@@shajitayeah I also feel like that It's kind of like after SF vs Tekken. Namco decides Tekken to follow SF fully since no more VF to draw from. 😂😂😂

A four buttons game like tekken would be so much more intuitive for me
VF6 will probably change the 3D fighting game industry once again! The next Tekken or Tekken after that will probably take some notes from VF6 😉👌
Yakuza VF.
I'm thinkin a Yakuza like World Tour Mode for a single player campaign. Stella might be a swerve and is really a user created player character for the said campaign.
I used to prefer VF to Tekken during the Sega Saturn days. From Tekken 3 onward I loved both series equally but a brand new VF game is long overdue.
I see VIRTUAFIGHTER as probably segas second most important franchise next to sonic.
So it would be a huge shame to end it.
The person in the trailer looks like Bacchus in his prime.
i hope there's a dedicated side step button rather than pressing up or down.

Since seeing the VF Direct and hearing the devs say they're focusing on "Innovation" and "Reality", I thought up a few ideas on what they might try and do for VF 6
1) Hitting certain parts of your opponent's body, such as their right leg, could deal more damage and carry over to the next round
2) A stamina bar that could be tied to blocking and dashing/side-stepping
3) A more casual game mode where players can pick up items off the ground and use them as weapons, a-la Yakuza
Y'all got any ideas for VF 6?
I think they’ll stay away from weapons . It’ll turn into Last Bronx
I see the word modern in any entertainment medium and I get scared, especially when pertaining to pre-existing ips.
I trust RGG more than any other studio out there, they constantly put out quality games in a consistent pace.
