My personal conception of the tempo was faster than the soprano desired, but I knew better than to impose on the singer. I let the soprano's choice of tempo rule throughout all rehearsals and the concert performance. I also used a very small and light stick pattern, so that the orchestra would never threaten to cover the singer. The result was a beautiful performance by the soprano and a wonderful artistic collaboration all around.
Bernard Shaw described this as the only conceivable music which could have issued from the mouth of God and Salminen makes this sound believable-this is the great basso in a performance which also makes the music sound like natural utterance.
Andrew Margrave Just so you know, Salminen has absolutely nothing to do with the tempo here. The conductor decides that and not him. Granted he is a high profile singer so he would obviously have input, but at the end of the day it is the conductor and not him who decides on the tempo. I personally think it's way too fast, but Salminen sounds great.

Salminen est excellent, mais ses capacités vocales pourtant immenses ne parviennent pas à rivaliser avec le regretté Kurt Moll.
Je ne suis pas sur que les 2 voix peuvent être comparées. A mon avis, Kurt Moll est le Sarastro parfait : timbre rond et chaleureux, conduite de voix impeccable. Salminen possède une voix plus robuste, un timbre plus "monstrueux", qui s'identifie mieux à Wagner. Et il ne faut pas oublier que les 2 chanteurs ont eux des carrières bien différentes. Comprenez moi bien, je suis un très grand fan de Moll, mais si on peut lui reprocher quelque chose, c'est que tout est bien chanté, sans aucun excès ou vulgarité parfois typique à l'opéra. Je me souviens d'avoir lu une entrevue avec Moll qui parlait justement du rôle de Hagen, que ce n'était pas pour lui, ce genre de basse agressive et monstrueuse. Dites moi ce que vous pensez de mon point de vue ! Salutations

raymond good he is not bad, but in this video he is far far from that. There are roles where he is marvelous, but there were and are better Sarastros. For example he would be the best Osmin in the world if he could sing a louder D2, becouse the other parts of the role are the best from him!!!
