What's your favorite Italian horror movie?
Beyond is my comfort movie but I'm all consuming with giallo because I like movies that don't give a damn and feel free to go off the rails. Even a bad giallo usually has a moment to remember. Like that movie in which Tom Cruise Top Gun poster forced a woman to literally throw herself out of the window - came out of nowhere but it was cool as hell
The Beyond. Deep Red and Dellamorte Dellamore are just behind it. All masterpieces!
@@volodymyrbilyk555There’s very few Giallos I’ve watched and gone away thinking “well that was just awful” even the bad ones have something to offer as you say, and there are so many good Giallo’s anyway!

In 2012, Arrow Video released the movies with a comic book version of Demons 3. Maybe you’d take a look at that, Matt?
Fun movies. Demons 2 did a better job with the location than Evil Dead Rise.
Bava and Argento would often joke on set about it being a “cosmic gumbo”
Fun & crazy movies. Tony the Pimp is almost the greatest pimp in film history (non-exploitation). Yes, it was almost written in blood that he had to return for the sequel. Where surprise he's one of the best characters again.
In October, I saw Demons in theater with Claudio Simonetti and his band doing the soundtrack live… such a fun and exciting experience

I love the glowing eyes that are used in both films. While a little cheesy, it still conveys just how frightening these demonic entities are!
While Italian horror is a blind spot for me, i view these as much watches. So much fun.
You can't go wrong with Italy. Even bad movies are usually watchable. There's a reason why guys like Bruno Mattei and Joe D'Amato are cult figures.

These two were staples of my high school years. Peak 80's horror with a vibe that's rarely outdone.
Definitely a fun twin set of films that found their niche corner in the horror fans memory. Plus the glowing eyes shots are simply iconic image
A few months ago I was able to personally ask Lamberto Bava if there was a possibility of seeing "Demons 3" one day. He commented that it had been written for 10 years and that Dario Argento (producer) liked the idea, but due to complications it could never be done.
Oh hell yeah, I love these ones. In no small part because Geretta Geretta is absolutely iconic. A true babe of the highest order.
If you want more cool Italian horror, check out “L’Inferno”, an adaptation of The Divine Comedy and Italy’s first feature-length film. It’s an absolute masterpiece. There’s great b&w and colorized versions out there, just avoid the ones with the weird single color filters, you’ll know them when you see them.

I watched this at the alex theater in glendale california recently. I thought they should freak everyone out and have folks dressed like demons scaring folks up and down the aisles when they come out in the movie. A great experience and goblin played the score live with the film.

It’s a fantastic film. I love the Demons films, but The Church is definitely superior to both, even if the Demons films are a little more fun to watch.
Great video, both Demons movies are tons of fun, hope to see more videos in the future about Mario Bava's films, and the other Argento movies.

Another great video essay: I've only seen the first DEMONS but it's the dreamlike possibilities of Italian horror at its most fun. I'm now tempted to visit DEMONS 2 before week's end. I would also love to see you tackle THE CHURCH in the future as well, for that I have seen and is bonkers in all the best ways, complete with the hint of a kaiju / giant made of combined corpses.

Excellent video! I love these films, although I’m glad we got The Church instead of Demons 3, that film is one I found to be a mixed bag the first time, but I’ve since come to appreciate as something really special!

Italian horror is one of the best subgenres ever

You have to give Italy props for their persistence. They've never made a single even remotely competent movie but, by God, they just kept trying.
Demons 1 is the better film, that helicopter just came out of nowhere, it always blew my mind, me and my friends would laugh about that scene, talk about out of the blue. Yeah the 2nd one is all about that battle between the pregnant woman and little gremlin looking demon, that battle goes on and on, but I found it funny tbh. I always viewed both movies as zombie films.

Tony the Pimp is the greatest character in any Italian horror movie. "SHIT! Another door!" and "SMASH EVERYTHING" live in my head rent free
I been meaning to get this film, i remember seeing this on Bravos 100 scariest movie moments and been meaning to check it out.

Not gonna lie, that special from Bravo is one of the best love letters to horror and a great guide to fledgling horror nerds.
the problem with dubbing is that it is greatly influenced by the quality and practice of voice acting. For instance Brasil and Spain have a long tradition of dubbing (I believe still today every show in spain in dubbed) so you have a lot of quality voice actors with lots of background and technique.
I do love the 2 demon filmsi do like Italian horror are not great but fun like Japanese horror movies.

Loved the first, but the second just felt like the exact same film again. The constant screeching of the demon baby was so annoying I had to turn the volume down
