  • A retrospective and analysis on the 1981 slasher classic My Bloody Valentine, including the history of its filming, its censorship, the film's long-running impact, how its power comes from the folk tradition of the murder ballad, and the shortcomings of its 2009 remake.

    Absolutely love this movie. I think it's really cool you spent time talking about the ending theme ballad, and influences. As someone who lives in Atlantic Canada, I didn't realize the Appalachian Mountains extended up into Canada, had only heard about it in regard to the US. I always thought the ballad had strong Scottish and Irish musical influences, as this region had a lot of settlers that have influenced the culture here.
    I enjoyed this original movie so much that I bought the remake when it came out (nowhere to rent at the time) and after watching it I just straight up through it in the trash, lol. At that time I had a big physical media collection and it was totally out of character for me to toss this new DVD I just bought, but I couldn't even imagine me ever wanting to rewatch it.
    Really enjoyed the video!

    I’ve personally found that the Canadian tax shelter slashers tended to be the best of the genre. They were a lot more welling to be about something outside of body counts.
    The remake I don’t remember much about outside of it having the most gratuitous nude scene I’ve ever seen a movie. And considering the genre we’re talking about that says a lot.

    What I learned years back when watching these slashers, don't mess with the blue collar workers. The killer may not be supernatural, but they can be VERY strong from years of labor.

    This has been a favorite of mine for a while now! As soon as I saw you'd made a video about it, I thought, "Of course, you did." I saw the remake first, as well, but I saw it on my birthday at a movie theater/bar in college. A theater full of drunk students watching a 3D slasher film was one of the best movie-going experiences of my life! Another great vid, Matt!

    I’m a big murder ballad fan. I grew up listening to old folk and outlaw country. I’m still a sucker for songs that tell a story. Great modern example of the genre still being alive and well is “Down the River” by Chris Knight.

    I always say, My Bloody Valentine is the second best Canadian Holiday Horror movie, because Black Christmas exists! What MBV has going for it though is how unapologetically Canadian it is, compared to Black Christmas, which tries to obscure it's Canadian production. Also, love the Prine shout out!

    Funny thing is that I first heard about my bloody Valentine from the remake until years later found out about the original film. I never got a chance to see it but this video really got me interested to see the film. Thanks for letting me know how unique this film was compared to other early 80s slashers at the time. Btw I think the killer having a miner's outfit is a fantastic idea.

    Great video! The original MBV is definitely held in very high regard in my household. Both my wife and I are huge fans of it and we echo many of your feelings and observations on it. We also loved the remake….sure that fake out twist is pretty lame, but at that point, I’d been along for the ride since the opening credits, so I was all in. And yes, the 3D was pretty awesome in the theater!

    The remake has that infamous "We twisted the twist!" problem where you just forced it so hard that it broke apart and became stupid.

    • @LucyLioness100
      @LucyLioness100 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Lol I think the remake’s twist is really silly as it’s just the opposite of the original since really only TJ and Axel are the big suspects aside from possibly Harry returning again (till the reveal at the close of the film). If anyone likes it, that’s fine as all are entitled to their opinion

    I saw the 2009 film first. Thinking it was really generic and trying too hard with it's gore (and I wasn't all that keen on the era of 3D movies). A friend recommended the original and I'd agree it is a far better film.

I found it a well made slasher, decently acted….and, as I listened to the commentary on my DVD copy, you are wrong about your claim it was all filmed on sets…almost everything was also a location shoot, in a small town outside of Pittsburgh, apparently….i also did very much love the original, also….and thought this was one of the very best of the ENDLESS remakes…
