  • In this video, I go over pitfalls to consider when taking online data courses.
    I also suggest an alternative mindset as well as the types of courses that you should pursue long-term.

    I enjoyed this video because it confirmed that I am on the right path, and it is refreshing to know that you put out there the hard truth that no one talks about and that you are doing it for the benefit of others. Thank you!

    In India there's a notable craze for enrolling in various courses with fresh graduates boasting about having 7 to 10 skill sets. the reality often falls short as many of them lack substantial knowledge in these areas despite the initial impression.

      Great observation! Definitely difficult to have expertise in so many skills, especially as a fresh graduate.

    oh MAN, I can relate. I spend so much time just doing random courses (and honestly didn't even finish most of them).
    This is clearly not the best method

      I've definitely been guilty of the same!

    Hey Matt,
    I am just getting started on my Data Analyst journey. I am planning to (quickly) reach a ceiling on the online certificate courses.
    I will be doing the Google Data Analytics first for overall learning and exposure.
    Then I want to do single moderate-sized courses in this order for each: Excel, SQL, & PowerBI or Tableau.
    I believe that ought to be the end of my course tunnel because as far as I can tell those are all I need to know for an entry-level job. BUT eventually I do want to pick up a Python course.
    Glad you pointed out there is a proprietary certification for Excel as I will probably be the most interested in that.
    I don't have any questions about side projects yet as I have barely started learning.

    Hey Matt love the content man big fan, I don't have a degree and I want to break into data. I got my google Cert already and I got all the courses you recommended in your video of how to become an analyst (currently doing the microsoft course) . I'm just having trouble finding a way to do projects that show the skills I learned. Can you a video about how to start a data project.

    • @MattMike
      @MattMike  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much! It sounds like you're definitely on the right track! I can definitely line up a video on the topic. For now, I'd keep it simple by focusing on a single project per skill. For example, 1 Tableau project, 1 SQL project, 1 Excel project, etc. Eventually, you can consider overlapping skills in a single project. Focus on getting your reps in and improving.

    Love this, I'm a victim of random courses, can you recommend where one can collaborate with others on building projects? Because I'm not sure I can build a project from start to finish on my own, maybe I'm not confident and I need to build that confidence with someone

      Kedeisha Bryan on LinkedIn has a great community that supports this. Otherwise, it is a bit tough to find communities where you can build projects together.

    Mike can I get the job with only SQL and Tableau for entry position, I no have time for python it's really consuming a lot of time,I am 43 year old:)
    And by the way in 43 I am afraid but companies looking for more youngest

    • @MattMike
      @MattMike  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You can definitely get a job with just SQL and Tableau! I've even seen roles that only require SQL and Excel. Or even just Excel and Tableau. Don't worry about Python for now.
      Also, I've seen people in their 50s transition into data so don't let that stop you ;)

      I think it’s great! Serves as a good introduction into the world of data analytics. I would just follow it up by creating more projects and spending more time in any skill areas you want to improve.
