Incredibly informative video. Broadcast is easily one of my favorite bands of all time. I’m still saddened about Trish passing away. She and her band were totally unique. RIP Trish.
Thank you for doing this. I am one of the newer fans of Broadcast, and I was not able to find more info about this band. I was terribly saddened to hear about Trish's passing. Yet her legacy is still here with us and will never be forgotten.
Thanks for the video. My college roommate introduced me to the band in 2000 and I’ve loved them ever since. I’m so sad Trish is gone but I’m grateful we have the music we have. Whenever I love something I search for related documentaries and I’m so glad I found yours. Thanks again.
Love this. I feel so fortunate I got to see her live in LA at The Troubadour in 2006. To this day I seem to listen to her music or think about her on her birthday or anniversary of her passing. Truly amazing singer/artist.
This is an incredible analysis! I’m a newer broadcast fan who fell in love with the sound immediately, and as I’ve become interested in them I’ve slowly noticed heaps of other people in my Spotify feed listening to them as well. I think they’re definitely having a bit of a Renaissance in popularity amongst young indie circles at the moment and it makes me super happy to see.
Agreed, Tender Buttons was their best - until - Broadcast and the Focus Group. A truly great work of art where all was said and offered up through incantation.
Thank you for this. Really great video! I listened and re-listened to Broadcast many times, and funnily enough I found them in a particularly difficult period in my life. Their music helped me a lot and Trish's voice really is deeply haunting and soothing at the same time. There is not a song I dislike and my favorite body of work they has to be "The Noise Made By People".
Hi! Broadcast's 1st album is actually "Work and Non Work" from 1997. I really recommend that record. The "Book Lovers" single was played on the radio at the time (I was 16) and I immediately loved it and bought the CD wich is really good!
I feel lucky to get to see Trish and James perform in New York, in late 2010 not long before she sadly left us. I was devastated by her death and still am sometimes. The best singer ever
Finally a great (if not the only) video on Broadcast. They where the band of my adolescence and still move me in such a profound, mystical and emotional way. Thank you so much. Tears in the typing pool is one of the greatest songs ever made. I go to it to find my mother when I need her.
Thank you for this video. I was just introduced to Broadcast by my 30 year old son. I'm 69 and have always loved dream pop even before it was called that. Saddened to hear about Trish's passing but I will definitely listen to her entire recorded legacy.
Saw them live in Boston when they were a five piece and it was a special show for sure. Had been following them since their first ep. When Trish and the drummer did Tender Buttons without the rest of the band it sounded like demos. Very lofi with drums and simple electronics. They ditched the cool retro artwork and colors and went DIY. Sadly, Trish died from pneumonia in early 2011 she was only 42.
I remember listening to The Noise Made by People back in 2000-2001 and really being struck by their retro, slightly spooky sound. Thank you for sharing this.
Broadcast was so amazing that actually their first 3 albums worth of music came from the Mida Vale sessions. But they kind of split the Mida Vale across the 3 albums. But think about that for a moment. THEY HAD 3 ALBUMS WORTH OF MUSIC FROM THE JUMP. That is crazy.
Nice video, although it's a bit of a stretch to call Tender Buttons their "undisputed best record." It's rating on RYM, for instance, is 3.68 - as opposed to the 3.67 of the other two. In discussions and reviews, it seems pretty common for people to name any of the three as their favorite. What's remarkable about Broadcast, if anything, is their ability to reinvent themselves with consistent success.
My general impression has been that Tender Buttons had the most ambivalent reception among fans. Some thinking it was a little too musically obtuse or less approachable compared to their earlier work. Or maybe that was just me. It took longer for me to warm to it but eventually I came around.
Thank you for making this wonderful video! Trish has been such an enormous influence for me and it means so much to see her get the attention she deserves. Will you be making more of these?
Check out one of their last shows, Live at the HiFi bar in Melbourne on 9/10/10. It’s here on TH-cam. Great show. Very interesting direction they were going in. I believe they were in the process of making an album out of a lot of this material when Trish passed away. So the Melbourne show was almost their last album in a way. It’s a superb show.
On a sheerly surface level from these few snippets, they sound like an experimental version of the Delgados in places. Either that or the Delgados sound like a non experimental version of Broadcast. I am sorry we (Australia) to have ended her career so abruptly :(
@@AGrrrlsTwoSoundCents Anytime I can bring people to the Delgados is a good day for me! Glad you like them, and hey! Now I have Broadcast to go imbibe in return. 😁
sounded exactly like Stereolab. Who was out for a decade or two before them. She literally mustve met guy and been like, lets make music like Stereolab.
Such a beautiful light. Taken far too soon and far too fast. Dying the way she did -- from complications of swine flu, of all things -- just seems, I don't know, cruelly banal and undignified for someone with the gifts she shared with the world. I mean, it's cruelly banal and undignified to all its victims, whoever they are, of course. Still, and maybe the reason is as superficial as her being famous, but it just seemed unusually unfair -- and unsettling -- in her case.
I found out about this band only months ago. Have been listening non stop to all of the albums. Found out recently that the singer had passed away at a young age. The last time I got this distraught was when Elliott Smith died. I almost feel like I lost a friend here, because her voice and melodies have been like a warm blanket for my soul. I have to honestly say after only a few months of listening to all the Broadcast songs on repeat. Trish Keenan is probably my favorite vocalist ever. There's such an otherworldly, yet down to earth quality to her vocal melodies and voice itself. And the lyrics are so relatable and clever. Can't help but feel like with her passing, the world is now missing out on so many more wonderful songs sung by a pure and honest voice.
I don't agree with your comment around 5:40 about Trish not being concerned about sales. I remember her lamenting in an interview about being critically acclaimed but still not earning enough money to get by.
That’s a valid point. I guess I should have worded it better. My point was more that the band stayed true to their artistic vision, instead of compromising it or watering it down, which is often encouraged for profit in the industry, ya know? It sucks that they weren’t generating a better living from their music, but it’s nice to see the cult following they’re generating now that seems to grow every year. Better late than never.
@@AGrrrlsTwoSoundCents definitely agree with that. I bought their records as they came out and the wait between them was torturous. I know someone who knew the band, they really didn't want to part with their drummer but it just wasn't economically viable for him to stay.
New series alert! I hope you all enjoy and feel free to send me requests for more people you'd like to see videos on ♡

Trish was your sister? I’m so sorry for your loss. Her music meant the world to me. It’s some of my favorite music ever made.
She has a new album out now thanks to James keeping her memory alive . I miss her so much x
It's called spell blanket. James has done her proud xx

Criminally underrated band
What a great band/project. I have been listening to Broadcast for 20 years and I still can listen everything with a lot of joy.

Broadcast was constantly playing in my phone back in 2014 my teenage years so sad she passed early
Excellent review. Broadcast is remarkably underrated
I'm new to Broadcast but wow, their sound resonated with me on such a deep level. So sad to know Trish is no longer with us
Broadcast finally getting the love they deserve!
One of my favourite bands. Them songs will stand through time.

Yes, all hail Trish Keenan 👩🏻 and Broadcast 🙌😁🔥🇬🇧. Saint Etienne are my favourite group, by the way 😁♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

As it's a compilation of EPs, it's generally not considered a proper album as The Noise Made by People is.
