  • This video is about who / how and when people should use devices that help train you into breathing through your nose again. I will cover Chin Straps and Mouth Tape. Please make sure that you can breathe through you nose on both sides and you don't have any sleep apnoea or upper airway resistance syndrome. If you do, there is a chance that you'll be putting yourself in danger. Igf you find yourself struggling to use these devices, please stop using them and get re-assessed. Be aware that you are using these devices at your own risk, and you ought to be assessed by your doctor if you are thinking of trying out these devices.

I use a small 1/2" x 1" strip of blue painters tape placed vertically between my closed lips at night for about 7 hours. Sometimes I find I have removed it during sleep. Do this 5/7 nights. The habit of breathing all night through the nose trickles into the day and now I never breath through the mouth except when exercising hard (higher than aerobic levels). Also you look better in public and in pictures with your mouth shut. Another benefit is that your mouth does not dry up at night if you use tape even though your jaw may tend to open and mouth breathing happen unconsciously, with tape it does not. Sneezing and yawning are a bit goofy but manageable. Since I sleep alone there is no communication issue. A closed mouth is better for dental hygiene/health

I wish my ENTs would have known about this. I had four surgeries in total and none cured my apnea, until I finally learned about mouth taping. This has put my AHI down from 24 to 6 and I feel like a different person now!

I couldn’t figure out the chin strap hahaha but after trying so many different methods and a combination of all of them, I found a combination that had worked better than anything.
I either use a nasal strip or a nasal dilator. I use mouth tape and I also use snore circle pro 6.0 which is an ear piece that vibrates when you snore.
The earpiece isn’t always consistent so by itself it isn’t as effective but if I still happen to snore through the tape and the nasal methods. The earpiece is like a fail safe haha but the tape on my mouth has really been the main thing that works. The other methods support it.
It’s a lot of prep for bedtime but worth it haha I have tried a tongue retainer which works good too but makes my tongue so sore. I can’t use a mouth guard bc I wear night aligners to correct my teeth.

Got may air sense 11 back in June -23 and after I started my cpap therapy the data showed that my mask was leaking lots of air. So I tried a chin strap + taping my moth. And now the data is showing that I don’t have any osa at night during me sleep. I’ve stop snoring and the machine isn’t detecting any leakage.
But after 7 moths of cpap therapy I’m still constantly tired during my time awake. I never feel rested. And I’ve tried to lose weight and gain muscle. Been weightlifting and keeping a good diet since May -23 but no results.
Tonight I stumbled upon your video about UARS and something clicked when you said that often times it’s enough to treat UARS with a mandibular advertisement device. I got a prescription MAD while waiting for my cpap machine Feb -23, and while it did cure my sleep apnea I started having the energy to care about my diet. And with just me not eating junk and sleeping with a MAD between feb-june I lost tons of weight. Didn’t even work out. But when I got my cpap machine back in June my doctor told me to only use the cpap machine. And that’s when my weight loss progress stopped. Even with me started to lift weights almost 5 times/week and using cpap therapy I gained all the weight I lost.
Tonight I’ll start using MAD with my cpap machine in combination with a chin strap and taping my mouth. Fingers crossed I wake up rested tomorrow. 🙋‍♂️🤞

Thanks for the info and review of these products. I'm confused about one part. When you were talking about the 2nd chin strap.. there was a graphic that said 'This would cause UARS or OSA!' What did that mean? Using that strap would cause sleep apnoea? Or that graphic was referring to something more specific and not just using the strap in general? Could you clarify? Thanks.

I think he meant that if a chin strap pushes your chin back, by extension it pushes your mandible and tongue back, which will then cause a tongue base obstruction

I have a question. I use a cpap and want to just use a nasal mask rather than a full face mask because the full face mask is uncomfortable. Is it still dangerous to use mouth tape if I'm using a cpap with a nasal mask and sleeping only on my sides and not on my back or front? It would be great if you could answer this. I'm confused and have found all this advice and videos on mouth taping for sleep apnea but you're saying it's not a good idea.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea after a sleep study 4 mos ago so I ended up trying a $50 anti snore mouth guard. It has reduced my snoring from ~60-90mins per night to 1 min or less per night. I have never recorded a single apnea event using ShutEye app so far. My deep sleep and REM have increased quite a lot although I never felt I had any apnea symptoms before.
I have a follow up appointment with an ENT coming up, but I wonder if I really have anything to worry about now. My sleep scores are typically 97-99% every night. Thoughts?

You dont need to tighten up that strong as in horizontal position it does not need to lift the chin up against gravity and by the way during sleep the muscles relax, so it closes the jaw very easily.

You don't know anything about sleeping. Most snorers got sleep apnea. If you force mouth closed they will fail to breath properly. The body involuntarily breathes through the mouth during sleep because the breathing pattern is a problem.
