I started mouth-taping around April, and now I tape my mouth probably 3-4x a week, having successfully trained myself to sleep with my mouth closed. This change in breathing has carried over into the daytime and has helped make mask-wearing for COVID much more comfortable. His assessments are pretty accurate with my own. I highly suggest people give it a try. The first couple nights may suck, and you may not wear it for the entire night, but eventually your nose adapts. I'm breathing better through my nose than ever, and I've had nasal problems my whole life.

Ali, I am a long time fan.
The dentist in me says: While awake, it is perfectly normal for your teeth to be disengaged (Check out Vertical dimension of rest) yet your lips are supposed to remain competent (closed enough to allow for adequate nasal breathing). If not, the first step is to check with an ENT specialist to rule out Nasopharyngeal anatomical challenges or pathologies.
As a patient of sleep disorders: I am glad that are diving into this issue to raise awareness about the quality of breathing during sleep. Totally relatable. Wish you all the best.

breathing though your nose during the day is *quite* important. There are quite a few people who also breath through their mouth which will lead to a bunch of negative side effects. It is well documented that mouth breathing adults are more likely to experience sleep disordered breathing, fatigue, decreased productivity and poorer quality of life than those who nasal-breathe. To mention a few; Importance of Nitric Oxide, negative Effect of Low Tongue Position, Postural Problems ...

I tried to tape couple months ago but gave up as it always gets removed from my mouth while sleeping. and now continue to be a mouth breather especially during sleep which makes me drooling all over the bed and getting dry mouth everyday.

I have been sleeping with mouth tapes for 2 plus years. It seriously transformed my sleep. From snoring, dry mouth & dry throat to much BETTER sleep with no snoring. Slowly my body learns to breath more using my nose instead of my month. Currently using 3M Nexcare Strong Hold Pain Free Tape for sensitive skin (blue packaging and comes in a roll) as you don’t really need to buy those expensive tape specifically designed for mouth taping. As someone with mild sleep apnea, and many years of being blocked up, I found using hayfever nasal spray and nasal strips worked to open up your nostrils over time. Add in working out, as you should always breath through your nose, you end up learning to breath through your nose naturally.

After listening to a couple podcasts/videos with James Nestor a couple years ago, I started my nighttime nose breathing routine using blue painter’s tape. Small vertical strip from a 1” roll works great. Sticky enough that it rarely comes off during the night and has caused no skin issues. The vertical orientation leaves little gaps at edges of the mouth if I need to talk through the tape. Wife thinks I’m bonkers, but it really prevents nighttime dry mouth. Also trying to focus on nose breathing when I exercise. Have used the same taping routine a couple of times for that, but it’s not something I’ve done regularly. Considering trying that again.

It's not ladylike to wake myself snoring! :D But I need to use my neti pot and stick a nostril-opening strip onto my face above the mouth closing one, or else I feel like I'm suffocating instead of falling asleep. But even given the expense of buying two different disposable strips to glue to my face every evening, plus all the neti saline packets & distilled water, it's been a win for me. And yeah, I started doing it after reading Nestor's Breath too.

If I start that, my wife will keep my mouth taped shut 24/7, and then I'll never be able to talk again.

You should read “Breath” by James Nestor. Fantastic book, it talks about everything you said in your video.

Ali, not at all sure whether you'll pick this message up almost a year after the posted video, but I'm intrigued to know if you are still using this product. It is only available in America though it does appear to ship to the UK. There are UK versions of this and I wonder whether you gave those a try? Or was this the one that came up tops in your research? Kindest, Neale

I'd recommend reading James Nestor's book Breath - he talks about the core facets of breathing. I did a review of it on my channel if you wanna check it out!

This is the source material for this video, and can’t really find a reference anywhere. Definitely recommend the book, one of the best reads of 2020.
