Oh my god. I've been knitting for like 15 years and have never heard of Norwegian style knitting. I just knit a few stitches this way and it BLEW MY MIND. I started laughing and swearing😂 THANK YOU YARN ANGEL🙏🏻💖🧶
Oh my goodness, I have been knitting for over 50 years and watching you video is the first time I have gotten an understanding of Norwegian purling. Not sayin' I am good at it yet! 😂 Thank you!
Great tutorial. I learned to knit about 10 years ago in my 40s. Since i knew how to crochet as a child, continental was easy to for me. I still can't " throw " . This method looks like it would with tension.
I completely agree! Continental never felt right, but Norwegian knitting and purling especially for ribbing and making cardigans was a game changer. I still mostly do English style, but the Norwegian way is gaining traction for me.
That English style!!! I,m knitting socks and visiting an English friend needed to start one. Found sets of embarrassing 4 (FOUR) sticks. Had to buy 2 sets while my socks need 5.
I have to try this for purling. I have tried English and just can't get it. I am a crocheter and holding the working yarn in my right hand feels wrong. I just started Continental style knitting and can do knit stitches just fine, but purl stitches are still beyond me. Granted, I have only been playing with this for 2 days 😂
This is the absolute best explanation of how to knit the Norwegian way that I have ever seen. You have demonstrated it slowly enough that I can see exactly what you're doing. I've tried knitting continental and have given up several times. As you said, picking knit stitches is easy but those purls.... ugh. I'm going to try this way on my next project. Thank you.
Thank You for teaching this.Ive been a crocheter forever but I picked up reg knitting a while back and started to see that its very slow going.Ive been TRYING to learn so called continental and I gave up from frustration.Until I saw this video which I guess YT put in my feed b/c I wasnt looking for another video. But here you are and Im going to try your way now.TY very much!
Thank you so much. I hope it helps. Just be patient with yourself. And I would recommend finding the original video by Arne and Carlos, it says The Purl Revisited. They give some additional explanations that might help it all click. Thanks again.
just started teaching my daughter and the Norweigan style is the only way she could wrap her head around doing purl stitches. once i learned Norwegian style years ago i very rarely use anything else. nice video to show the close up ease of the purl. gr8 work!
I learned English when I was 10. I’m 70. I learned continental about 20 years ago. I use it during stranded knitting but don’t like the otherwise. Thanks for your video. It’s very helpful.
Same here ... up till now only English, with continental for in the round fair isle (second colour knits “picked” in left hand). One colour projects only for about 20 years so haven’t ended continental, but will definitely give this a go next project (men’s cable Aran sweater)
Oh … my … GOSH! I have never seen this style of doing purl stitches. Thank you so much for this video!!! Purl stitches are not not the bane of my existence anymore!
Beautifully explained 😊 I am knitting for 15 years and only learned the norwegian way of purling. When I learned how my friends did it (continental) I only thought "why are you doing this to yourselves?"😄 It's so hard! One little tip: if you hold the finger with your working yarn further away (higher up) and don't just use the very tip of the needle but rather the first 2 centimeters to go around the yarn, into the loop picking up the working yarn and back, it will get even much easier because it's not so intricate! Have a lovely day 😊
I've been watching a ton (well four or five) Norwegian purl videos today. The pacing in yours was just right for it to click. I need to practice to transition from Continental. Thank you!
When you watch more than 2 videos to try to understand something frustration males it seem like a ton so you're not wrong there lol. So glad this was helpful. Happy knitting 😊
I am Norwegian, and i have always done my purls like this 😊 My knitting also. I’m over 50 years old, and this is what my mom told me, and we also learned to do this in school 😊
I am so glad I decided to watch your purl video when it unexpectedly popped onto my screen. I tried it, and love it! I’ve been knitting for 60+ years and had never seen this version of purl before. It’ll take a little while for me to get used to, but in time, I’ll be knitting much faster than ever. Thank you!!!
I’ve been knitting for about 55 years. I’m just finishing off (hopefully today) a top for myself then decided I would try continental style on the next one. I’ve just found your video so it’s a great help. I knit the Scottish way, slightly different to the English way, but my joints are getting sore these days and I think continental will be the way to go. Thank you for your fab video 😊❤
Hi, Dorothy, my late Gran, from Newcastle, also knitted Scottish style. A very fast and prolific knitter. I recently had a very bad fall, dislocating my right shoulder and bad gashes on my right hand, which is when I decided to learn Portuguese or Scottish, but I think this Norwegian style might work better for me! Please let me know how it worked for you?
Thanks so much! I also watch the wonderful Arne and Carlos but your video's slow pace and slow explanation has opened the door for me. Thanks again. 😃😃❤️❤️
Thank you so much for this video. What you showed and your explanation finally made it click for me and now I can do the purl stitch!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. 💕
Girl!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have tried so many times to learn continental knitting and I could never get it to work for me. I watched the video you linked and after five minutes, it felt more natural than even the throwing style has for 20+ years. Thank you so much for sharing!

Norwegian knitting is awesome. It solved so many issues I had with knitting, e.g. looping the yarn properly, purling, tension. Now knitting is a breeze.
Took me a while too for the purl. I still have to do a couple before I get into the groove again if I haven't pulled in a while. the one thing I like too is that I can switch styles when my hands get tired.
Omg, this is SO helpful! I've been crocheting for a while, but never tried knitting until a month ago, and purling has been such a pain! This looks like the perfect solution! ❤ thank you!
Congratulations for trying something new! I'm a continental knitter and I find it so smooth. You'll get the purling in time. Keep plugging away at it. It gets where it is just as fast as knit stitches.
Thank you. I don't see my speed necessarily increasing but I do knit longer with this Norwegian way so I can accomplish more in the same amount time which is awesome!!!
I started knitting after being a left-handed crocheter and continental just didn't work for me because I was so used to tensioning my yarn with my right hand. This is SO much easier to you. You are so right about the purls, thank you so much for posting this!!

Woohoohoo😀 i finally found the most easy way to do knit/ pearling so the thread can stay behind the work al the time now i can try to finish my dachsen sweater on circular knitting needles
I love your video wish it had come out many uears ago. When I moved to Turkey I saw a lady using the continental method and I was amazed at the speed(!).
@@beyondswatches4665 I do wonder though if speed is really that important unless you're making items to order, it should be something you enjoy and take your time over. I find it so relaxing along with crochet and you can let your mind drift off lol I'm normally having grapes peeled for me and sipping cocktails on some tropical beach! 🤣🤣🤣
Lol thats a perfect knitting set up. I don't think speed is that important either, but when I'm trying to get to the finished product that's when I wish I had a turbo button. I'm really more of a process knitter though so I enjoy the whole thing, even the mistakes and frogging.
@@SandraJane-bd8im turks, afghans and indians are naturally fast knitters its part of there culture. Indians especially are used to working with extremely thin yarn for better quality so if you want some you have to be fast, my late granny had indian cashmere stole and jarse(shawls and jerseys) they over 100 years but still in good condition. My mum has them stored away for 20 years after my but takes them out when she misses my granny
That's a beautiful memory. Thanks for sharing. I hope to make an heirloom quality something for my girls to pass around after I'm gone. I remember first using fingering weight yarn, I thought I was a professional lol then I found out about cobweb and lace weight. Oh my!!!
Same here re purling continental style. I tried Norwegian after watching A &C too. It felt like too many steps. I purl Irish lever style. That really saved my wrists.
I've been struggling to learn Continental knitting to help relieve some shoulder pain from using English style, but could never get the hang of the pearl stitches. I had the same issues that you were showing in the video. I am definitely going to try this method! It looks fun. :D
Continental knitting came natural I was only told to hold the yarn like you do to crochet, never saw it done just winged it but purling is a whole nother thing, the tension is looser than throwing style. Thanks for your demonstration, hope it will work for me
I started knitting English style but never felt comfortable.I then switched to Contiental knitting and purling.I couldn't get the tension with purling , so I switched to Norwegian purl. This was a game changer.I can now after a few years use both Norwegian purl and continental purl.It takes time and practice
Continental always.gave me so much issues. Until i started watching Arne and Carlos. I love when Carlos says to" keep your fingers down. Pointing is rude "😂 This seriously changed my knitting life and solved so many tension issues. I norwegian purl except if i am doing stockinette flat or double knitting. Then i combination knit.
Lol his explanation sealed it for me. My favorite thing was in case of emergency pull the cord. I struggled keeping my finger down and would lose tension easily. I'm like you also, when working flat sometimes I go to English flicking, or what I've heard call a Russian purl. I'm in favor of what ever produces the right stitch lol it's nice to have options
i do continental knitting because i learned crochet first so i was already used to holding my yarn in that way (although the way i purl is different to what you demonstrated and based on how i purl in tunisian crochet)
I learned knitting a month ago, English style. When I learned the difference between English and continental I quickly realised that it'd be worthwhile investing time in learning continental because it looked more efficient. But i cant purl, it's so frustrating. I think this might be just the answer to my problems. Thank you so so much. As soon as I wake up I'll try it!
I couldn't agree more. I tried knitting over 20 years ago, but gave it up because of the difficulties I was having with it, and switched to crochet. Recently I decided to try knitting again, and I still have difficulties, especially with purling; but this time I was determined to make it work somehow. I found out about Continental knitting, and that was perfect for me as a crocheter when it came to the knit stitch, but purl was still problematic...and then I discovered Norwegian knitting. My knit stitch is a sort of hybrid between Continental and Norwegian, but my purl is Norwegian, all the way. Not only is it not nearly as difficult and time-consuming as it first appears to be, it's FUN! I spend way more time fighting to do a decent purl with the other methods, whereas I can whip through a Norwegian purl with no problem. I'm with you! Thanks for sharing this valuable information!
I think it looks easier than any other continental purl method but honestly, my knitting is pretty fast the way it is. And looks very neat. When I learned continental it never looked as good so I stopped and went back to the traditional method I’ve been using for 45 years.
Hi!!! I'll repeat my good words for you here as well!! This video was soooo helpful for me being a crocheter who.wants to.learn to knit socks. Knitting the continental way is perfect for.crocheters. Holding the yarn is.much alike. But purling has always been a mess with me, even with English knitting as I learned as a child. So I'm soooo.happy with this video. Now for.some practicing on my own 😊
That's exactly my thoughts. Even though I crochet and knit with opposite hands, learning to purl continental just was too stressful. This clicked for me. I always recommend Arne and Carlos video for those wanting to try something else. My video just gave my thought process and explanation of how I understood them. I guess we all adopt our own "style" so glad you found it helpful.
@@beyondswatches4665 I also like Arne and Carlos explaining in their video about sore hands with knitting and what causes those pains. Sounds very plausible to me!
I tried continental knitting but it aggravates the arthritis in my left thumb because of the amount of movement I needed to do in purls. I’m going to give this a try because I saw your thumb barely moved. Thanks 😊
Yes please try it! If you figure out the right tension for you, you wouldn't have to move the right thumb at all. I seem to move my thumb when working with thinner yarns because they slide off the needle too easy and it gives me more control, but for worsted and higher keeping the stitches closer to the edge help to just pivot, turn and slide the stitch off.
I used to hate purling. I even changed to English style, but I couldn't get the hang of it as I always holded my working yarn on the other hand. Now every Norwegian purl stich is like a little dance of joy for overcoming this obstacle. Ahaha.
i have been knitting and crocheting for over 60 years. the first step for any of them is to hold the hook or needles in any way that is comfortable for you. that will be the basis for speed. i tried continental knitting after 50 years, and finally decided treating the yarn the same as in crocheting was a game changer. i have never seen anyone who holds the crochet hook the way i do, but it doesn't matter. it works for me. find what works for you. happy yarning!
I ran across this a few years ago, and I agree that the tension was my biggest problem. I could do the continental purl , but when I knitted a beautiful sweater, my tension was off on the purl stitches! So i worked on learning Norwegian purl and that was the answer to keep a good tension! I can now do either continental purl or Norwegian purl easily, but tension is by far better with Norwegian.
I am 88 and learned to knit when I was six. My method of knitting is totally different from the method. It is very quick and even stitches. I watch other methods but find them awkward and uneven. It could be me, but I will keep to my Dutch style. I knit socks on four needles and they are beautiful.
Doesn't it just feel fancy lol. Seriously though, I had to keep practicing the purling because it was a little slippery. I ended up now wrapping finer yarns over my pinky and thats been helping.
Very interesting. That’s why I wouldn’t continental knit. I can keep the tension the same when English knitting. But I will try the Norwegian way. Thank you.
Wauw! ! ! Best explanation of Norwegian purl!

This was a game changer.I can now after a few years use both Norwegian purl and continental purl.It takes time and
practice
I love to hear that. It made all the difference for me too.
Thank you for the tip, I was struggling with the same thing.
You are so welcome! Happy knitting!!
Continental always.gave me so much issues. Until i started watching Arne and Carlos. I love when Carlos says to" keep your fingers down. Pointing is rude "😂
This seriously changed my knitting life and solved so many tension issues.
I Norwegian purl if I’m doing ribbing, but if I’m doing stockinette, I wrap with my left hand.
Whatever gets the work completed right? It's so helpful having multiple techniques in our back pocket. You never know when you need to switch it up.
This was absolutely wonderful to read. Thank you for sharing. Amazing how similar our experience is.
I think it looks easier than any other continental purl method but honestly, my knitting is pretty fast the way it is. And looks very neat. When I learned continental it never looked as good so I stopped and went back to the traditional method I’ve been using for 45 years.
Norwegian Pearl, fab for continental knitting as the yarn stays on the knit side. Ideal when ribbing 🧶💕
That's the biggest benefit for me too. Ribbing just flies by.
Ahaha.
Love it. ❤️ That's how Arne describes it too. A dance, like a cha-cha-cha. Happy knitting 😀
Oooo I like this!
i have been knitting and crocheting for over 60 years. the first step for any of them is to hold the hook or needles in any way that is comfortable for you. that will be the basis for speed. i tried continental knitting after 50 years, and finally decided treating the yarn the same as in crocheting was a game changer. i have never seen anyone who holds the crochet hook the way i do, but it doesn't matter. it works for me. find what works for you. happy yarning!
Absolutely! I always encourage do all the things. There's no right or wrong (for the list part)
I still struggle with regular continental purling. I always seem to lose my yarn after 6 stitches or so. Totally agree with you!
I am 88 and learned to knit when I was six. My method of knitting is totally different from the method. It is very quick and even stitches. I watch other methods but find them awkward and uneven. It could be me, but I will keep to my Dutch style. I knit socks on four needles and they are beautiful.
I love Norwegian knitting. I still have a slight tension problem with the purl, mainly because I haven’t practiced it enough 🧶🧶
Thank you.
Thank you ❤
Is my two ladies knitting needles?
