This song is the most famous, when I was growing up in New Orleans! Great dance tune for Soul Train dancer and put the young lady dance on the map, by dancing to o it!
Thank you for sharing this. I first met Joe Tex in my father's office in the late 60s. Mr Tex was buying a house in Baton Rouge La. and my father at the bank gave him the loan. A time of great Black music.
The FABULOUS JOE TEX, “Great Entertainer, One of The Best,a GREAT LEGEND.”!!! “Yes’ I knew about the rivalry between Joe and James Brown. My favorite song by Joe is Hold On To What You’ve Got.
In the 1992 mini series "The Jacksons: An American Dream" there's a scene when Joe Jackson was yelling at the young Jackson brothers about grabbing the microphone like Joe Tex!
One of my fathers favorite artist. I really loved the song "Hold On To What You've Got." Being a 70's child "I Got Cha" and "Ain't Gonna Bump No More With No Big Fat Woman" were two other songs I liked by him. Remember him performing it on Soul Train. No, I never knew about the J. Tex & J. Brown rivalry. Thanks for this history on the talented singer and performer Joe Tex. 💞🎶🎼🎵 Ps, I loved the animated clip too.
Joe Tex is a R&B/Soul legend, and his legacy should never be forgotten! My favorite Joe Tex song is "I Got Cha", as it's obvious that Joe Tex was a great talent that also had a sense of humor!
All I remember as a little boy in Meridian Ms, Joe Tex got the most airplay of any R&B singer. WQIC radio loved them some Joe Tex. I actually thought he was from Meridian as much as they used to play him in the early '70's. Joe was the man. Much respect to him and you for giving us this documentary of him.
I love "Ain't gonna bump no more," everyone did. When I first saw videos of him performing back in the days, I was stunned at his dance moves; that's when I realized where James Brown got it from😮
I DON'T BELIEVE JAMES BROWN COPIED ALL OF JOE TEX'S MOVES THO' JOE TEX WAS VERY MUCH UNDERATED I ALWAYS LIKED JOE TEX .. I LIKED HOLD ON TO WHAT YOU GOT, THE LOVE YOU SAVE, I'M A MAN, WHICH WASN'T PLAYED HERE, BUT I LIKE THOSE THREE THE BEST I WISH "HOLD ON TO WHAT YOU GOT" WAS PLAYED/SUNG' TODAY IN THESE MODERN TIMES/ERA'S🎤
"Under your powerful love" still finds its way into my vinyl set when dj'ing to young students today. Works! Getting young folks to enthusiastically dance to tracks they've certainly never heard before... 👍✊🏿
My favorite song by Joe Tex is "Skinny Legs And All". Yes I heard there was some beef between Joe Tex and James Brown. "You Keep Her" is considered the very first diss song.
Joe Tex , yessssss A under rated OG. I was 5yrs old My Aunt And Mom Loved listen to his music. What I think he was most famous for was the song: Hold on to what you got, Skinny Legs, I Got You. (He performed on Soul Train) and Charle Brown. Ain't gonna bump no more.
I heard the song the payback was about Joe Tex. And when James saw Tex on Soul Train dancing with dancer Damits Jo Freeman. He came in and danced with her. Hmm
My favorite song was show me a man that's got a good woman, show me. I didn't know about the rivalry between him & James Brown. Thank you for that history lesson.
Very interesting video, you are the GOAT. I’m going to go to Joe catalog and listen to the songs you played, a few caught my ear. He was young, May this man be Resting In Peace!!
My favorite Joe Tex song is "Anything You Wanna Know." A wonderful description of small town life. I grew up in a different time and a different place and am not Black but it draws a wonderful portrait anyone can appreciate.
I grew up listening to Joe Tex, James Brown, Stax Records, Motown, to name a few artists of that era.. my favorite Joe Tex song is Skinny Legs & All…Being from Philly, I didn’t know about the rivalry between JT & JB..Thankyou very much for making these videos
Joe Tex was the baddest soul singer from my early childhood hands down! It's hard to pick, but I'm going with 'Skinny Legs & All' 😅. It's a short cut, but to those who hadn't heard of him at all, it's a nice & funny intro to him. May he continue to Rest in Power 🙏🏿
❤❤❤ my two favorite songs by Joe TeX is I Ain't Bump no More with No Big Fat Ladies, skinny legs and all. No I didn't know that James Brown didn't like each other. But I wish that he knew how much we loved him and miss him so much.
A OLDER FRIEND OF MINE, WHO WAS IN A DO-WOP GROUP BACK IN THE DAY, TOLD ME JAMES BROWN STOLE A LOT OF HIS MOVES FROM JOE TEX. SO R&B ARTIST WERE BEEFING BACK IN THE DAY. THIS WAS AN INTERESTING VIDEO.
Honestly, Joe Tex had it when singing soul music! He had the vocals, the moves, and the songs. My favorite song was "Hold on to What You Got!" Meaningful and True.
NEVER knew of the rivalry of those two gentlemen. I think thats sad because both were fantastically talented. My favorite song is the one where he said " the battery fell dead right in the heart of town, embarrassing me..." I was a little girl when my mom gave a reply to his confession: "I guess so!" I thought Joe was saying he was ashamed, but I listened minutes ago and realized the girlfriend was turned off!! Hey, I was six years old, what did I know?? 😅😅😅😅
I love all of James brown and Joe Tex music. They both are legendary artists of their own right. Yes I knew about their rivalry about each other. James brown didn't really care for little Richard because he thought Richard looked better than him. But all of them are wonderful music artists and may they all RIP. My song for Joe Tex is "I ain't gonna bump no more with a big fat woman" and" I got ya" and " Hold on to what you got"
Thanks so much for your posts about these fabulous artists! The chart topping 80s English singer Paul Young covered SYSLJFM with his Soul group Q Tips at the end of the Seventies and I believe it was a hit. It was pretty close to Joe’s original
He was just as good as James Brown if not better just from what I've heard here. I remember his song Hold on to What You've Got and I loved it. I loved to listen to Joe Tex and often wondered about him and what happened to such a great talent.
Great video coverage 💯 Joe Tex is definitely a soul Legend and a pioneer of soul music. Great history lesson I didn't know about the Rivalry between he and James Brown
Grew up listening to Joe Tex. One distinct memory as a kid was my mother playing "Hold On To What You've Got" to my older siblings and their girlfriends with that warning to listen to the words. Always loved his voice and style! Didn't know about the rivalry with James Brown until now.
Buddy Killen was Joe’s manager and best friend. Joe was a gentleman, a scholar, a devout follower and minister within the Nation Of Islam who’s light shinnith as a beacon throughout his community of man…and his community of professional contemporaries. Many attribute Joe to being the first rapper.
Joe Tex was a Muslim under the teachings of the honorable Elijah Muhammad. In fact he was a minister. He was raising money to help the honorable Elijah Muhammad build a hospital on the south side of Chicago. They didn't complete the project but he was active in the Nation of Islam
I didn't know about the rivalry, I was too young. These were songs my mom's asked us to dance to, we had fun doing it and hanging out with the grown folks. I liked Joe Tex, my mom's loved him. It was plenty of Tex 45's in the 45 rack
My favorite Tex song is "Skinny Legs and all". Yes, I am familiar with the Tex-Brown rivalry. Joe was a wonderful performer, singer and songwriter. He should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He clearly put the hits up there. There are people with less hits than Joe is in the Hall of Fame. Joe's legacy continue. One of his sons, is a professional performer, singer and musician. He goes by the name "Joe Tex II".
"Show Me" was my favorite by Joe Tex. "If Sugar Was As Sweet As You" (on Dial Records) became a NORTHERN SOUL favorite -- in the U.K. P.S. Just listened to a cool version of "Sugar" by U.K. band, Rockpile!
Tex was my mom's favorite soul singer, she called him the lovers singer. My favorite song is skinny legs, but I have to say his version of green grass of home is the best ever by a country mile
AWESOMELY well Covered; and Review of Mr. JOE TEX!👏🏼🥰🎤😎 I had No idea, He Released So many Records. My favorite song by Him, was, "Skinny Legs And All!"👏🏼😂I met Mr. James Brown; and He Autographed; and Awarded Me My FIRST $100.00 💵One Hundred Dollar Bill, for having drawn His Portrait.👩🎨❤️A few Years later, I spent an afternoon; with The Jackson Five, having drawn All of Their Portraits; as well!🥰❤Thanks A Million, Your Video Reviews are🔥🔥🔥👏🏽😎👑❤️
I spent some time with a guy who was Joe Tex's road manager in the late sixties and early seventies. He said that the rivalry between James and Joe was real, but as time went on, it became a way for them to each get local press. He did say that at one time, just to get up James' nose, he started billing himself as "The Soul Brother Who Doesn't Need a Number". He also said that James stole Joe Tex's trick of throwing sand on the stage so he could slip around effortlessly. Joe is one of the most unappreciated of the sixties soul giants. I think a big problem is that he spent too long trying to imitate other artists(like Sam Cooke) before he found his true voice. That and his records haven't lent themselves to being sampled like James Brown's has. I recommend anyone interested in discovering sixties soul to check out any of his records.
My favorite hits by Joe Tex is "I gotcha" and "You said a bad word". And no i didn't know about the beef between Joe Tex and James Brown. That was CRAZY! This conflict between the performers should've been settled on stage and unite. But egos reared its head. It was years before some hip-hop beefs! Joe Tex is an underrated performer- scratch it, he's a HARDEST WORKING MAN IN THE BIZ. Thank you for the information. Respect to Joe Tex 🔥🔥🎶🎶🎶🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾!
He was very entertaining! We all loved him. Going Chicken Crazy, You better keep the one you got , I Got ya! Well it goes on ! He was unique , to say the least. He made the name “ Leroy” a hit! The song Skinny legs and all; just blew us away!
