  • A few days ago I bought a 1964 1/2 Mustang convertible for my wifey. She loved it. Here I am giving it a tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser, vacuum advance, oil, filter, clean and adjust carb, maybe belts, top off fluids. I will also steam clean it sometime this weekend.

FYI, after owning this car for some time now, I realized that a whole bunch of facts I said in this video are wrong. The car did have many upgrades and modifications done to it over the years. The most notable is the Pony interior. Those were not available to the 1964 1/2 Mustang. The power steering system was an add on from probably a 1966 or there abouts and not factory correct for this car. The valve covers were wrong as I did mention. I found out later that it does not have the original engine because the date code on the engine is a month later than the date code of the car, but it is a 289. I'm sure it has 150,000 miles on it. Clearly this car has been restored to some degree in the past. However, it is still in very good condition. I did a lot of engine work sealing leaks and tuning it up and installing the correct power steering system correct to the 1964 1/2 car with an Eaton pump. I fixed the rust holes in the floor. So sorry for the miss information. Live and learn.

    Wow...I like that Mustang!
Very little rust repair needed, and basically untouched, I've often referred to these old Ford's as a piece of art, and that one is truly a piece of art!
Thank you for the rust repair complement, I really enjoy doing the sheet metal work, so it's more of a fun thing for me...but, man O man, it's a slow process! 😳

Hey Alvin, yes this car is truly a piece of art. Simple and basic. Not nearly as complicated as a Thunderbird. I really like what your doing. Its very interesting to see all the little parts of the car and how they are put together. Its also very interesting to see how you fabricate the parts with the different machines. This is something I wish I had learned but never had an opportunity to do so. So, because of my lack of metal skills, I must find rust free cars to bang my head against like these Cadillacs and Mustang. I have seen some truly pristine Thunderbirds in my day that I parted out and ended up throwing away because nobody wanted the parts. Sad. Anyway, I've got myself a fun little project here so Ill be busy with that for a while. Thanks.

What an awesome find Nick! She's a beauty. Can't wait to see what you do with this gem. White on white is really beautiful.

Very nice Mustang. Great find. I agree, it looks cherry. Alvin is a master at metal work. I think he would like that car. Better yet, your wife will sure like it. The pressure is on. you told the world. Now she knows. Walt

Nice score, mine has the 260 v8... got mine from the original owner about 20 years ago now. Love this car.

    Nick,
It's about time you got off the wallet for Tamie. No doubt she'll enjoy the heck out of it. Good going, old son! 😎

Hello Nick. A very nice car! Looks like it will clean up relatively easy? Looks like new front shocks. Cooling fan doesn't look right? No need for A/C with that white interor and convertible. You found a nice one, for sure. Congratulations!

Hey George, yes the fan is new, 6 blade flex fan. Much better than the original, probably a 4 blade fan. I'm glad the car doesn't have AC. What a pain in the ass AC is. They always fail or need this or that, and the components are always in the way of something. Air is not that important in Colorado as opposed to LA. You've got to have air in LA. My white 66 has air and it worked when I was in LA. Once we moved here, I've never used it and now it doesn't work. I think all the R-12 leaked out and I don't have any more to recharge it and don't have the time or the patience to convert to R-134. I don't need air so bah hum bug on that!! Thanks.

I love it! A '64 - 1/2 with a 289...and a convertible to boot...is something special! I love it's originality, and yes, I'm jealous. I remember the excitement these created when they were first released, even though I was only 6 or 7 years old. But what about the '66 T-Bird convertible you recently bought? Are you going to put that on the back burner? It would be cool to have a T-Bird and Mustang parked next to each other in the garage as a mid-sixties Ford convertible theme!

Hey Kayeninetwo, the 66 Thunderbird conv is in LA and I cant do anything with that until I go there and get it ready for transport. It needs a few things to make it safe and reliable before they transport it. I'm going there in July to deal with that. Yes, they should be parked together in the garage once I make room and clean up the garage. I was 8 when the Mustang first debuted but I don't remember that much about it. I do remember when the Camaro debuted because my mom bought one new in 1966 and I went with her to buy it. I remember the excitement around those. I also remember when the 65 Thunderbird debuted because of the sequential tail lights. Thanks.

Holy cow!! Your West Coast Mom was a lot more fun than my Midwestern Mom! There wasn't even a remote possibility that my parents would do something like that. Now I'm REALLY jealous! 😄

OK, this is my 3rd time trying to post this comment, if it doesn’t work, I give up…
Nice Mustang Nick! 289 with a C4 transmission. Manual drum brakes, will you be converting it to power brakes for Tammi?
It looks like when they put the chrome valve covers on the PCV system was removed, and they ran a draft tube off of the right side valve cover’s oil cap.
One subject I’ve run into lately on allot of the fb car groups, allot of people having tires blow out or come apart. The reason, the tires are over 10 years old, more than a few that looked OK visually but still blew out or came apart. It would probably wise to look at the DOT date codes on the Mustang’s tires. If they are 10 years old or older, replace them. Even if you buy an inexpensive set, a new cheap set is allot safer to have than an old or used set. Especially with your wife driving it.

Hey Tbird, finally got your comment here. Sometimes, more often than not, I don't see some comments so I have to go to the TH-cam studio and then click on comments there and then I can see all the comments that I didn't see normally. I don't know why the system does that. So that's what I'm doing now, answering all these old comments that have been missed and unanswered. Anyway, that was the first thing I did, check the dot numbers but I could not determine the date. I've done that many times but this one has weird numbers or letters and some are missing with just a blank oval where numbers or letters should be. Needless to say, Ill replace the tires soon anyway. You are right, most of these old cars have tires on them that are 10 plus years old. Thanks for the good advice. Cheers.

Hey Nick im building a 64 t bird and was wondering if i could raise the strut tower brace to clear a daul chamber master cylinder?

    • @vintagethunderbirdrepair9426
      @vintagethunderbirdrepair9426  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey, I guess you could make something that would work if you were good at metal fabrication. You have hood clearances to deal with. Ive never seen anyone do that but who knows. I have no advice for you since Ive never seen that done. Good luck.
