I grew up in Dehong. There were lots of rubber trees there. In the autumn, I went to tap the rubber latex with Dai aunties. I also picked some rubber seeds to make bracelets. Each rubber seed has a distinct pattern. Fresh rubber seeds are somewhat poisonous. Heat the seeds over high heat several times to remove the poison. Now they can be used to extract rubber seed oil. The oil is very thin and crystal clear. The taste is very light, with a texture between water and oil. It has a slight grain smell. I also made some dishes with oil. I don't think people read the description or know this, but there is a difference in the seed! Not all rubber seeds can be used for consumption. For example, young rubberseeds are what everyone is saying: "poisonous, or toxic," but the ones used in the video are older. Hence, why she's picking it from the ground.
Plus, you can see that unlike other oil extractions, water was added to the rubberseeds after drying and breaking them instead of directly crushing it with a machine like you would do to rapeseed. The drying process is to lessen the toxicity on the seed and boiling it two times, allowing the 'poison' to be rid. Now, it's just an oil that has mild flavor that I don't know how to describe, and is not toxic!

There's lots of comment about the toxicity of the seeds....but Apenjie already knows that. If you read her writing in the description box below the video you will see quote " Fresh rubber seeds are somewhat poisonous. Heat the seeds over high heat several times to remove the poison. The relatable feeling when you put so much manual work and you only get a few bowls of oil, I used to make coconut oil and grating the coconut meat manually, when you get the oil it's sooo satisfying hahaha

Also, I'd like to point out, that it is entirely possible that this *very specific* type of rubber seed *could* be non-toxic and consumable. I don't know anything about this particular species of plant to say for sure.
HOWEVER there are plenty of other plants where only a few variants are edible and others in the family are toxic to human beans. Mushrooms are a great example of this.
Regardless, I think what's MOST IMPORTANT HERE is that she's showcasing a sustainable type of living that we all can achieve. The main thing is, you can't rely on what someone else is doing in another geographic location supremely different from your own.
Get onto your homelands, learn what naturally occurs there, encourage its growth and respectfully enjoy the bountiful harvest. What works in Apenji's world, likely won't translate to yours, so learn yours!!

As far as I know, rubber seeds are only for children's toys (two rubber seeds are competed for strength, one that breaks means defeat), this is the first time I've seen rubber seeds being used for cooking.

我是海南人，我爷爷从海南解放后开荒地，到规划橡胶林片区，跟橡胶树打了一辈子交道，父亲年轻也割了好几年，再到生产队干部，母亲也是收橡胶的胶站职工，一家人跟海南橡胶树的难分难舍，但也从不知橡胶树籽还能榨油？？至少在我这三十多年的印象当中，家里从没有吃过橡胶籽油

I didn't know rubber trees grow in China?
I grew up in the tropics and surrounded by rubber trees whilst growing up. As a kid, Whenever we hear the "break" of the seeds we rush out to collect the seeds. Some of them have beautiful patterns, are smooth n shiny. We compete with each other to see how many unique patterns we have of the seeds collected. Good memories.
Back then rubber trees are kept for the latex that car tyres are made off...
I didn't realise you could get oil out of it. I guess we didn't think about it because we have lots of coconut oil and peanut oil back in the sixties. N then in the eighties, there is palm oil. Thank you for sharing us your knowledge. Cheers.
