- A female lawyer hears a knock on her door one night and discovers that it is an old boyfriend, whose current girlfriend has thrown him out, and he needs a place to stay the night.
She agrees to let him sleep on the sofa but he must leave the next morning. When he returns home he finds that his girlfriend has been murdered. His former lover agrees to defend him without telling the court that he spent the night with her.
Complications ensue.

Wonderful movie with great actors. For me, it was a very special movie as Arthur Howard, the younger brother of Leslie Howard, was playing the part of the first witness, Mr Vaughan in this movie. It was arranged for me to meet Arthur in 1966, and being young I was terrified of meeting a stage and film actor for the first time. I was worried as to what to say to this person if I was able to say anything, but my worries were put aside because after less than 5 minutes he had me talking about myself and nothing could have stopped me. You see, I was very timid and shy in those days, and this wonderful person was able to relax me and stop being frightened. Thank you Arthur for that. May you RIP.
These British movies are most enjoyable. Interesting plots and good acting. Bravo to the Brits.
Suicide or murder - and innocent goodness of a believing friend - and the best and most gentlemanly courtroom drama...Wow! Great film. Please watch it . And thanks for uploading. People from the older generation, like me, may wonder at the crass, vulgar way in which unnecessary details are elicited these days in cases involving well known figures, in comparison to getting to the truth with intelligence, manners and respectability...

Superb dialogue for a B movie. The famous quality of British actors in the 1950s, even second pew, is present everywhere. Thank you for sharing
To me referring to these as “B” movies was an insult because the actors were always “A” quality.
For the British film industry in 1952, I think this was more than a "B-film"
Rosamund John is always a pleasure. She had a unique style of her own, wonderfully measured and stylized. Hugh Sinclair I enjoyed very much in Circle of Danger, and he is no disappointment here.
She played Toddy in that lovely film The Way to the stars.

Watch it through the ending. Delightful film that gets better and better as it goes.
The highlight of the film is the all-round villainy of the Guy character. A stupendous piece of acting. That said, what baffled me was how Anne could at all have had any kind of relationship with such a character in the past, a man twice her age with teeth about to fall off, a man who reeks of villainy in body, speech and soul!
He probably stank of tobacco and booze,a revolting thing from the depths of the lower Thames.
Rosamund gave another wonderful performance in "Green for Danger", a terrific murder mystery starring Alistair Sim.
I fell for her when I saw The Way to the Stars.
That was a great film too!

Typical 1952 ending. After years of studying then ruination of her career, woman suddenly becomes happy to marry man she doesn't really want to marry.. Both live happy ever after!

Good courthouse drama. More intriguing question is how did a smart and intelligent lady fall for such a low-life character?
At 43.34 is actor Arthur Howard, the younger brother of the more-famous pre-war actor/producer Leslie Howard.
Minor actor Harry H. Corbett can be seen as a prison-warder at 1.01: Corbett later hit the big-time in 1960s/'70s television comedy.

I wonder what kind of a life it is to just drift. No focus, no ambition. Except for my family my career was the most important thing in my life. 50 yrs Home Builder.
A lot may depend upon which shore or beach you wash up on. i wouldn't say all drifters have no ambitions or focus. They are not all Zombies. Some drift as they cut their moorings for any of a number of reasons. Society it self drifted apart after the 1940s war when 2 different sets of values emerged with the older generation who had been through the war thinking they could no longer understand their children because their children had never known or seen what those who survived had seen.
Now that we have had 70 years of QC's, I suppose we will be going back to KC's after the King's coronation.

One of the bit parts, the officer at the remand cell, was Harry H. Corbett better know for his role as Harold Steptoe in Steptoe and Son.
All on all, general publick was betrer off without Ann in the court. Lack of reasoning is one (she could have realized that she did not know if he was wondering around) and questionnable ethics was another reason - why would you take a case defending your former lover and hope nobody wouild figure it out?
The lady that talks to Rosamund John after 5 mins was a car mechanic in A Canterbury Tale.
That young Alan character turned up in Coronation Street about thirty years later as one of Elsie Tanners playthings - he still had the stiff upper lip 1950s style of acting like in this film
I'm puzzled by the ending. Why is Ransome going to jail for a nice long stretch. The prosecutor assaulted him. Couldn't Ransome claim self-defense? And how dumb was Ann -- not to consider the possibility that Ransome might have snuck out during the night.
My impression was that Ransome was wanted for past crimes brought to light by the prosecutor as a result of background investigations. Yes I thought he may have sneaked out in the night easily, but the real mystery to me is why did Ann like him at all, ever.
Ransome was a seedy creep from the beginning. Also however; a violent assault on a member of the court is considered a dire offense. And he had a witness. The story was better without a delay at the end explaining details. Artistic license.
That is why she did not say that he slept on the couch. That possibility would have been addressed.
Anyway, that weasel screaming, "Ann, Ann, Ann," from the dock compromised her immensely. I'm sure the jury felt that there was some sort of hanky panky going on between Ann and Ranscome. Ranscome's so low, lower than whale poop!

Ransome pulled a gun. Also, the prosecuting attorney had evidence of other, lesser crimes as he stated when he said about pulling up a rock and discovering other things about Ramsome.

I noticed you didn't change things for the better. When you say 'your lot' You could be referring to the Rockers hurling deck chairs about on Brighton beach and thinking that was the sort of rebellious change which was right for Brighton. You could have been a Greaser, Mod, spive, Beatnic or Bethenal Green Gangster.Or were you a young Tory and therefore you thought you changed things but instead of change you were only changing the narrative of pupupets on a stage. It wasn't your lot who changed the monarch in february '52 from George Vi to Lizaseth II. I guess not. So what were those supposed changes your lot thought they made, Sir. And when did you make them. Because later in the fifties people were still using the hand mangle to squish out water from their washing and going to the outside karzi to read the old news of yesterdays gone by. It was hardly accent in my opinion. But gramma. In terms of success and popularity the accents which were raising to popularappeal were the Liverpudlian, Beatles and Cilla Black. Or you had the Barbara Winsors type Cockney accents. But those were hardly what some may say was proper spoken English. They were English accentuated accents which became popular with or with out gramma. I think you meant gramma. Which of your generation didn't know about or care for. That is clearly evident as the children of the sixties who came from the previous generation turned out to be Beatniks, Hippies, Flower children and Train Robbers. But truly the Train Robbers were not your lot's fault or your generation's fault as most of them were from the Georian era.

Yes, the sound wasn't super clear for me either.
Sorry if the audio is a problem.There is something like a 10-12 step process between the original film and audio, all the way down to the YT uploads. If anything goes wrong at any stage, it can lead to problems. I have control of the last 3-4 steps and I try very hard not to make any mistakes or add to any existing problems.
The accused’s age supposedly is 43(?) he looks more like age:63!
Born in 1906, he was 45-46 y/o in this film. If he smoked and drank alcohol to excess, coupled with his thin physique, this could result in his looking older than his actual age. Around the eyes he doesn't appear to be in the best of health. He died from heart attack at age 66.
Everybody looked old back in those days. Even children.😅

Queen Elizabeth II Barristers wouldn't have been officially classified as Q.C. until she was officially crowned in 1953. However there is no 'real' Time-Frame in the film, which would have started filming earlier in 1952, and was probably filmed and possibly completed before the King George VI had passed away.

You MUST check out "Green For Danger" here on TH-cam! It offers a superb storyline with a host of well-known actors, including Rosamund John and Alastair Sim! I watched it again today, while I worked on my art projects. It's always nice to listen to a well-loved movie when I am busy with art. I don't have to watch it to keep up with what is happening, because I already know what is happening. I enjoy audiobooks, as well. Simon Stanhope's channel "Bitesized Audio" is great for that!

I started to watch the movie because it had the great Brenda de Banzie. And I just fast forwarded until she was on screen.
Brenda de Benzie is one of the greatest actresses ever on film. And she did not disappoint. Everyone else, except the villain, was like milquetoast. Boring as heck.
